father at the age of five, with official
lessons beginning two years later. By the
age of nine, he was enrolled in the prep
program at the Peabody Institute. He
graduated from Berklee with a degree in
jazz composition and arranging. Chestnut
took his time, working with a number of
top-notch musicians (Jon Hendricks, Betty
Carter, Terence Blanchard, and Donald
Harrison) before finally recording his first
solo CD at the age of 30. Chestnut enjoys
mixing styles and resists being typecast in
any one niche, though his gospel sound is
apparent on a number of his recordings.

HISTORY OF OCEAN CITY
After World War II, Edgar Yow, an enterprising Wilmington attorney and former
mayor, purchased six miles of beach property on Topsail Island. As mayor, Yow
had become acquainted with many members of the black community and realized
that in the era of segregation there was a need for beachfront recreational
opportunities for African Americans. Yow approached Dr. Samuel Gray with his
idea; Gray was unable to devote a great deal of attention to the project but soon
called upon friend Wade H Chestnut and his siblings Bertram, Robert, and Louise
Chestnut. Gray and the Chestnuts purchased several tracts from the Yow and
formed Ocean City Developers. Ocean City Beach was established in 1949, and
soon became a popular choice for African Americans. Camp Oceanside was built
for the use of black children by the Episcopal Diocese in 1955, followed closely by
St Mark’s Chapel in 1957, now the Wade H. Chestnut Memorial Chapel. The
close-knit community, now a part of North Topsail Beach is part of the
Jacksonville•Onlsow African American Heritage Trail and is denoted by
commemorative street signs installed by the Town of North Topsail Beach
