1.0 INTRODUCTION

This is the final project for Element of Natural Built Environment which is representing a future city. Planning and organizing skill to make a city are needed in this project. Besides, the investigation made in project 1 will relate to this final project.

We are the mayor of city and we need to imagine that the city had faced some problem. So, propose a new future city is needed. It will be done by collect more information on how to plan a city. Student will need to refer to the ancient, present and future city to found the specialty from the city.

Lastly, this project is related to the subject because we will need expose and show the symbiotic relationship of the element of natural and built environment. We will learn and understand how to well plan and organize the city at the end of the project.

2.0 THE CITY

2.1The City Definition

CITY is almost defining characteristic of civilization. It is a place where people live and work cooperatively, producing food to sustain not only them.

CITY is actually a relatively large and permanent settlement. It has been called the highest forms of social organization.

CITY is basically is a complex systems for sanitation, utilities, land usage, housing area and transportation.

CITY is a central place of trade to the people to live and they will get benefits from the facilities provided.

It able to make an interaction between the citizens. These interactions generate both positive and negative externalities between others' actions.

Requirement of a city should be:-The size and density of population should be above normal in a city.-That is differentiation between the populations.-Needed to pay tax for government-Basic facilities are provided

What is the brief history

1.1 What makes a good city?

CITY generally has a good complexity for sanitation, utilities, land usage, housing, and transportation.

The concentration of development greatly facilitates interaction between people and businesses, benefiting both parties in the process.

Such cities are usually associated with metropolitan areas and urban areas, creating numerous business commuters traveling to urban centres for employment. Once a city expands far enough to reach another city, this region can be deemed a conurbation or megalopolis.

1.2 What is the future city?

Many citizens and cities have confused with how to define a “Future City” might be. It is important for cities to use a proper definition because it has sets the scope and focus for what will be the complex journey of transformation.

A Future City is in a position that will make a success of the present. It is economically active in highly value industry sectors and able to provide the workforce and infrastructure that companies in those sectors need.

A Future City creates an equitably distributed growth where education and employment opportunities are widely available to all citizens and communities.

A Future City will be operates efficiently & intelligently so that the resources such as energy, transportation systems and water are used optimally, providing a low-cost, low-carbon basis for economic.

A Future City enables citizens, communities and businesses to do their best because making infrastructures become smarter is a big challenge. Making cities Smarter is a societal challenge; and those best placed to understand how societies can change are those who can innovate within them.

2.1 ZHUJIAJIAO,CHINA

It established around 1,700 years ago. It covering an area of 47 square km and the little fan-shaped town

glimmers like a bright pearl in the landscape of lakes and mountains. The town lies to the south of the Yangtze River and was created as a

typical ancient water town. It also contains many meaningful buildings such as well-preserved examples

of Ming and Qing architecture, old stone bridges and picturesque streets. The population of the town is 60,000. Due to the Zhujiajiao is a water town. There are 36 stone bridges and

numerous rivers line and many ancient buildings still line in the riverbanks today.

Bridges here are distinctive and old, built during Ming and Qing Dynasties.

Zhujiajiao have a large number of waterways, boat become the main transport in the town.

2.3 Layout:

The layout of the town looks like a folding fan inlayed in the beautiful mountains and waters.

Many people takes it as the Venice in Shanghai. As early as the Song Dynasty, Zhujiajiao had been a bazaar place which

commerce were flourished because the water transportation was so easy at that time.

2.4 Economy The main income of the town is mostly the handicraft item. The handicraft industry had been very famous, during the mid-Ming

Dynasty, the production of cotton cloth and spinning fabrics were the main businesses engaged by local families.

2.5 Conclusion about the cities I found that the ZHUJIAJIAO Watertown has full of interesting architectural

structures. Besides, I can found the layout of the town is quite well organizing and the

transportation is quite well due to the bridges and boats.

2.4 What information or element that you can use to your new future city

From this town, I can learn about how to make the transportation system in an effective way and learn how to plan land usage of the city.

Besides, housing area is an important element in organize a city. If a city does not have a well-organized housing area, the city will become very confusing.

The house in the ZHUJIAJIAO makes use of the condition which build the house beside the river is a good example of planning the city. Resident can get benefit by this factor.

3.1 Malé

The Male is the capital and most populous city in the Republic of Maldives.

The whole island group, the Maldives, is named after its capital.

Republic of Maldives which commonly called the Maldives Islands was first settled in the 5th century B.C. by Buddhist seafarers from India and Sri Lanka.

People have been living on the islands of the Maldives from as far back as 3000 years ago.

The ancient mariners came from different parts of the world. They came from Asia, Arabia, Europe and the Americas.

As 99% of the island is the sea, it made sense that life centered around the ocean. 

As the population increased, the Maldivian people with their mixed features, and simple, peaceful nature began to emerge. 

The Maldivians, with their inherent love for peace, had to fight hard for their independence.

The Maldives which had become a British Protectorate, Maldivian gained full independence on July 26, 1965. 

The second Republic was declared on 11 November 1968 and since then the country has remained a fully independent republic. 

3.2 What makes is a significant city and what are the details?

GEOGRAPHY AND CLIMATE

The Maldives is a double chain of coral atolls running north-south through the Indian Ocean, off the south-west coast of India.

Among the whole area, it comprises 1,192 low-lying islands.

The islands are dispersed over 90,000 square kilometers of ocean, but the total land area of the country is only 298 square kilometers.

The climate of the Maldives is tropical, with temperatures ranging between 24 °C (75 °F) and 33 °C (91 °F) year-round and the monsoon rains generally fall between June and August, bringing 250-380 centimeters (100-150 inches) of rain.

CULTURE

The islands of Maldives are appear in-between the trading route of the Indian Ocean.

The looks of the Maldivian people may differ from one to the other, attributing to the genes passed on by South and Southeast Asians, Africans, and Arabians.

The language, Dhivehi, differs in dialect in some regions in the south of Maldives, possibly due to the secluded nature and subsistent ways of island life. 

The mixing of cultures is very much seen in Maldivian arts

The music played with the local musical instrument ‘bodu-beru’ (big-drum) resembles that of African drumming.

Maldivians are quite open to adaptation and always generally welcoming to outside inspiration.

The culture has always continued to evolve with the times.

TRANSPORTATION

The transportation in Male is basically the boat and the plane. The boat in Maldives function equal to the car in others country while planes and private yachts are mainly reserved for tourists.

ECONOMY

The economy of the Maldives is based on three industries: tourism, fishing and shipping.

Tourism accounts for $325 million US per year, or about 28% of the GDP, and also brings in 90% of government tax income. Over half a million tourists visit each year, mainly from Europe.

Then, the second-largest sector of the economy is fishing. Skipjack tuna is the prey of choice in the Maldives, and it is exported canned, dried, frozen and fresh. In years 2000, the fishing industry brought in $40 million US.

Other small industries, including agriculture, handicrafts and boat-building also make small but important contributions to the Maldivian economy.

3.3 Conclusion about the cities

Male is an interesting city in Maldives. It is the largest and the most popular among all island in Maldive.The Maldivian make use of the geography of the area. Sea is the majority of the Maldives and Maldivians treat fishing as the major income. It is a way to solve the economy issue.Besides, they able to organize the city as well as possible to fully use the characteristic of the city to get advantage.

I can to get information from the republic of Maldives, Such as economy. I can know what is the economy should focus in my cities and how it should go. It is very important because the economy is the heart of a city.

4. Investigation & Data Collection:Future Cities

4.1 What city are you concentrating on?4.1 The Ark

Global warming had cause increases of sea level. Many of the cities can’t escape from being submerge.

So, an arch-shaped building, the Ark, has design to overcome the problem.

It has a structure that enables it to float and exist autonomously on the surface of the water. 

It looks like a ship sitting upside down on the water.

The Ark can be built in various climates or any situation because its basement is a shell structure, devoid of ledges or angles.

The Ark was also designed to be a bioclimatic house with independent life-support systems, including elements ensuring a closed-functioning cycle.

The versatile structure could be constructed in most corners of the earth, even in earthquake-prone areas.

A load-bearing system of arches and cables allows weight redistribution along the entire corpus in case of an earthquake.

Constructing “The Ark” — which would include 14,000 square meters (151,000 square feet) of living space — would cost roughly the same as building an energy-efficient house.

The building’s smart design that enables an optimal relationship between its volume and its outer surface, significantly saving materials and

providing energy efficiency.

4.2 What makes is a significant city and what are the details?

The Ark building constitutes a single energy system. The cupola, in the upper part, collects warm air which is gathered in

seasonal heat accumulators to provide an uninterrupted energy supply for the whole complex independently from outer environmental conditions.

Its shape is convenient for installing photovoltaic cells at an optimal angle toward the sun.

The heat from the surrounding environment — the outer air, water or ground — is also used.

The self-sustaining structure would be built around a central pillar, connecting wind generators and heat pumps on its roof with the basement, where solar, wind, and thermal energy could be stored and turned into electricity.

There will also be a “tornado” energy generating spiral at the top of the pillar.Daylight is filtered through to internal rooms due to the hotel’s see-through structure, reducing the need for lighting.

It has also been designed to stay afloat in the event of floods or rising seas.

It would be built around a central pillar connecting to roof-top wind generators and heat pumps, as well as to energy storage and thermal conversion units below.

The building without glass, choosing instead a durable and self-cleaning

foil that could withstand harsher weather conditions. That foil would be fastened to metal profiles, which would also collect

rainwater.

The building would also feature an indoor jungle, creating its own micro-climate.

There will be an array of vegetation to aid air quality and provide food sources

Conclusion about the cities

The building meet the needs of human at minimal input cost Well design and suitable for living

It has consider the need of human and emphasize on it

4.3 What information or element that you can use to your new future city From this building, I able to learn about how to design a city which meet the

needs of humans. In a city, it must contain the living condition which needed by human such

energy supply, food resource or education. Besides, I had learned how to make use of the design of the city. The city must in

a well-organized so there was no waste place in the city. Lastly, concept of green had become a trait in the future. The city must be eco-

5.2 Who are the people, population religion etc There are many citizen with different race in my city, there were

resident from the other city. There are here seek for the protection in my city. In my city, no

racist will happen. Everyone are united. The population in my city is about 250,000 which is consider a small

city. There are many religion in my city, but it can mostly divided into 4

religion which are Buddhist, Islam, Christianity and hindu. There were also other religion in the city.All religion are able to well communicate each other. The follower of each religion will not offense others religion.
