Christmas pudding is probably one of the richest desserts in the world. It is one of the staples of British Christmas.

You will want to eat it after finishing off the vast amounts of ham, turkey and vegetables that make a traditional Christmas, dinner. But many British people will agree that without it Christmas is just not the same

WHERE DOES IT COME FROM? Before the 17th century, the main Christmas dish for British people was the plum pudding, the ancestor of Christmas pudding.

Plum pudding was made with lots prunes (dried plums) and looked like a thick soup. It was served with the meat course and was eaten with a spoon.

With time, people added other ingredients, such as mutton, raisins, wine, ginger and cloves until it became so thick that a spoon would stand in it. So, the original Christmas pudding wasn't really a dessert at all!

DID YOU KNOW? During the rule of Oliver Cromwell (1599-1658), eating Christmas pudding was illegal in Britain! Cromwell thought that the dish was so rich that it was sinful to eat it.

So, he just banned it! Anyone caught eating it could be fined or sent to jail. I wonder what Cromwell would have thought about McDonald's?
