[poupower Have you heard of the phrase

“Killed by PowerPoint?” Maybe

you’ve sat in a meeting or confer-

ence and have been serenaded to

“sleep” by the monotonous slides

being clicked right before your

very eyes. If not, you are one of

the lucky ones. But for those of

use who can relate, now’s the

time to consider exactly what your

PowerPoint point really is. Below

are some tips to consider as you

design your future presentations.

#1: I want my slides to accompany

a speech.

TIP: Include more images so your

audience listens to you instead of

reading the slides.

#2: I want my slides to help my

audience build memory on the

topic.

TIP: Add a catchy title that stands

out or even play with WordArt to

design a slide that makes an im-

pact.

#3: I want my slides to engage my

audience.

TIP: Include some thought-

provoking and discussion-

building questions in the presen-

tation. Never underestimate the

power of “Think-Pair-Share.”

#4: I want to present key ideas

in a succinct way.

TIP: Model short-hand and

note-taking by chunking the

information for your audi-

ence. Students benefit from

seeing multiple examples of

notes and if you present slides

that hold too much text, this

may work against you.

Most importantly, have a clear

objective for bringing slides

into a lesson, and by all

means, have fun doing it!

Your PowerPoints!

An easy way to liven up a slide

presentation is to add some clip

art and eye-catching animations.
