Letter from the Board of Directors On behalf of the Board of Directors, I am pleased to share the Corvallis Waldorf School 2012/2013 Annual Report. 2012-2013 was a year of advancement for the Corvallis Waldorf School Community. The Board of Directors continued to look closely at the governance and management of our school. One of the most visible changes was the clarification and expansion of the role of Diane Martin as Director of Business Operations. This created a more realistic scope and workload using focused skills and expertise and strengthened the operational foundations upon which the school stands. All during the school year, we conducted a Capital Campaign, led by David Bernell and Liz Riley. This effort raised over $350,000, and secured the purchase of our buildings and 12 acres of land. It has also spurred a renewed cycle of Strategic Planning: one with opportunities for input, participation, and active dialogue. The Board is always examining the key beliefs that enable or hinder the work of the school, and looking at how the community functions. We are always looking for specific tactical changes that could make a big difference in the lives and work of teachers and students alike. This is important work for our community and I want to thank two Board members who have served for many years and have now stepped off of the Board - Woody Fitzgerald and Lonnie Drouhard. I would also like to welcome Jennifer Biesack (parent of Sylvie in Grade 1 and Kyran in Golden Rose and attorney for Grande Ronde tribe) and Jason Seivers (dad of Hazel in Willow Wind and Field Trip Program and Donor Relations Manager for the Nature Conservancy). As the Board of Trustees looks toward next year, we continue to focus on the long-term stability, strength, and resilience of the school so that our outstanding faculty and staff can continue to serve and inspire our students. We are honored to be a part of this thriving and striving independent Waldorf School community dedicated to fostering compassionate graduates, capable of meeting diverse challenges and committed to shaping a better world for future generations. In Gratitude, Blain Willard, Board President ANNUAL REPORT for the 2012-2013 ACADEMIC YEAR Financial Report The school’s financial position is strong. The most notable item in our financial profile is the success of the capital campaign we conducted last year. This campaign achieved over $325,000 in donations and pledges, allowing the school to take ownership of the property we had been leasing for the previous ten years from the Corvallis School District, and to maintain a capital reserve fund. The school’s annual operating budget increased in the past year due to high enrollment and strong fundraising efforts in the annual fund and the auction. This revenue base allows us to offer a wide range of programs and activities such as music, handwork, Spanish, and field trips. Most of our revenue (83%) comes from tuition, with the balance from fundraising and donations. There continues to be extra capacity in most of our classes, so with further enrollment we could add up to 50 new students with our current teaching staff and program levels. There is a need for additional personnel in the areas of administration and facilities management. Additional costs are also to be expected to account for annual salary increases and rising health insurance premiums. Update from the Administration

Patricia Thom, Administrative Director

When I think back over the past year, the word that comes consistently to my mind is “change.” Sometimes change can be an uncomfortable process, it upsets our well-worn habits and thoughts, but it can also generate visions for the future. I think our community’s response to change has definitely sparked new enthusiasm and devotion.

One of our biggest changes has been the purchase of our site at the end of a successful capital campaign. Right around the same time we purchased our site we received a transformational gift from Barbara Schilling and Richard Carr, grandparents at the school. This gift of a new middle school building will be the first time that we can make a major change to our site to more closely reflect what happens here. It will provide a healthy and light-filled space for the 6th, 7th and 8th grade classes.

This gift has led to visions of other possibilities for the school and so we have also begun a Strategic Planning process. The basis of this work is to gather community input and eventually create a multi-year plan that integrates all aspects of the school.

The constant in these transitions has been our community, the heartfelt thread from our dedicated founders to the earnest new families who joined us this fall and everyone in between. This strength and creativity of this foundation is what has formed our school culture. This is what has made our school a success and provides the basis for our steps into the future.

Leadership Updates Wendy Willard and John Nelson for the College of TeachersThe faculty at the Corvallis Waldorf School is committed to creating a strong and meaningful experience for all of the students in our care. This past year the early childhood program became a full member of the Waldorf Early Childhood Association of North America. In addition, this year we have added a nursery program that serves children between 24 and 36 months. We also are excited to be graduating our largest 8th grade class this year with 22 students! This year our faculty meetings have become an extension of teacher training. We have an opportunity to study together, share insights about our classes, and participate in enriching activities such as singing and games. This strengthens our connections with each other and with the curriculum as well. We have also renewed our College of Teachers. The College of Teachers is a group of dedicated faculty who are committed to upholding and strengthening both the spiritual and educational life of the school. In weekly meetings, the College of Teachers actively studies the work of Rudolf Steiner to better understand human development and the role it plays in education. The College of Teachers works closely with all of the teachers in the school to help bring an education that is deep and lively.

Sara Miller, Parent Council ChairThe mission of the Parent Council is to support the enrichment of the Waldorf experience for families through parent education, to serve as a communication bridge within the CWS community and to nourish and inspire the CWS community. Each year Parent Council volunteers host the welcome back spaghetti feast, and sponsor monthly community coffee hours on the second Wednesday of the month 8-9am. This year the monthly Parent Council meetings have been expanded to include an enhanced faculty presentation. A new Parent Fundraising Committee has been created to oversee fundraising supported by the parent community. A “meal train” coordinator position was developed to provide support for CWS families. The Parent Council made up of Class Representatives, Class Parents and interested parents meet monthly. All parents are welcome to attend the monthly meetings, held on the 1st Wednesday of the month 5:30 to 7:30pm.We offer our deep appreciation to all of you who been an active part of the Parent Council. A robust Parent Council allows for more a more enlivened and enriched CWS community.
