Community Placement Brief – Designer and Photographer

The Vision; Community PlacementsHere at Middlesex University we want students to be at the heart of our local community and for

the local community to see the University at its heart.We are excited to be offering Community Placements across the borough. These are not

volunteering opportunities they are paid placements. They give our students the chance to develop their academic studies in a real world setting. They also give our students the chance to give something back into your area.

All MDXSU placements are paid in line with the London Living Wage Foundation.

The Project; Finchley Progressive Synagogue Finchley Progressive Synagogue is a Jewish community in Finchley whose aim is to reach out to all

those who are seeking a Jewish life with liberal values. They recognise the reality of modern life and welcome not only Jews but also their partners and families, and all those who seek a Jewish connection and positive Jewish experiences. As a Liberal synagogue they adapt Jewish traditions to the 21st century and welcome families and households of all shapes and sizes, along with those who join on their own.

This placement will be really valuable to the Synagogue. They are in an intensive stage of our development, and having a modern, professional communications output is a big part of that.

The Placement; Designer and PhotographerYour speciality in either design or photography will allow the Synagogue to reach out to a new

audience in new ways.Your photography skills will help to promote the Synagogue in the local area. Your pictures will

encourage the local residents to rent space for community events. Your creative designs will create material for publicity that will be professionally printed. Your enthusiasm and training will inspire members of the Jewish community to learn these skills for

themselves meaning your input will continue long after the placement has finished.

Designer and Photographer x2 opportunities

Salary Band: London Living Wage (currently £9.40 per hour)Hours: 4 hours per week (but can be very flexible)Duration: 4 weeks November - DecemberLocation: Based at Finchley Progressive Synagogue, Hutton Grove, N12 (plus some work remotely or from home)

PLACEMENT PURPOSE Photographing Synagogue facilities for inclusion in publicity media Training members of the congregation in photographic techniques Creating the designs of publicity leaflets to be professionally printed, according to specifications provided by the

What is the recruitment schedule?Applications close at 5pm on Friday 21st October. We will be completing the shortlisting process as soon as possible following this time. Unsuccessful applicants will be notified at this stage. Please note however that due to the number of applications that the students’ union receives for placement opportunities, we are unable to offer personal feedback on applications.

Shortlisted candidates will be invited to interview. The interview will be held on Monday 31st October

At MDXSU our full-time staff team is complemented and supported by a team of student staff and interns. This unique structure puts students at the heart of the delivery of work and campaigns at the students’ union.

We have consistently increased the number of internships and placements we offer each year and students and staff alike find working together a hugely empowering opportunity.

From September 2016 we will be offering over 30 opportunities.
