Find the Oddball• Print off the page(s) of choice onto card stock. Note that each phonics

feature has its own color and number to help keep them separate.• Cut out the cards and shuffle them up within each phonics skill, keeping

cards from different phonics features in their own piles.• The child reads through the 10 words on the cards within each phonics

feature and finds the “oddball” (the word that does not fit the same pattern as the other words in stack). Hint: The oddball for each phonics feature will have the same visual pattern, but will make a different sound. For example, want has a single a like all the others, but the adoes not make the short a sound.

• The student needs to also be able to verbalize WHY the word is the oddball.

Variations:• This makes a great literacy center in a classroom or independent work.

Copy off and cut out the cards from 5 different pages (keeping them in separate bags by color). Students use the recording sheet from pg. 3 to record their answers and explanations. Be sure to have students write the corresponding number on their recording sheet for each phonics features.
