HISTORY Records from Ted Sowers time at Chaco Canyon NM Theodore Sowers was a seasonal ranger/historian at Chaco Canyon NM in 1941, custodian (superintendent) of Chaco Canyon NM from 1945-1946, and custodian of Great Sand Dunes NM from 1946-1950. During the 1941 season, Sowers produced several photographic reports of the archaeological sites, including petrogylph panels and the effect of the fall of Threatening Rock in January 1941. The photographs in this collection are primarily from this year. He published an article in "Southwestern Lore," Vol. 8 No. 2, Sept. 1942, entitled "The Petroglyphs of the Chaco Canyon area." After working for the Wyoming Archaeological Survey in Laramie (1941-1945?), he arrived back in Chaco as custodian on January 4, 1945. His tenure lasted through November 12, 1946, when he and his wife Cecilia left for his new posting at Great Sand Dune NM. The journals in this collection document his daily work at Chaco. Sowers was obviously accustomed to keeping these NPS Field Technicians' Comment journals, because the Chaco entries are contained in Journal #9, which begins December 1, 1944, while Sowers was as Tumacacori NM, and ends in Journal #16, March 31, 1947, while Sowers was working at Great Sand Dune NM.

SERIES DESCRIPTIONS AND FILE UNITS Collection/Series: 0052/001 Series Title: SERIES I: Reports Accession: CHCU-00637 Catalog Nbr: CHCU 68341 Inclusive Dates: 1941-1986 Bulk Dates: 1941 History: Sowers produced his reports by typing captions and a small amount of text onto 3-hole-punched paper and pasting 2.5" x 4.5" prints onto the paper. The petroglyph report (#2) and the Threatening Rock report (#3) are accompanied by typed memoranda from Sowers to the superintendent of the park in 1986. The Petroglyph memo describes how Sowers did his survey and what portions of the canyon he surveyed. The Threatening Rock memo details its fall on January 22, 1940 [sic]. (It fell January 22, 1941). There are various accounts of the fall, including one in the Lister and Lister 1980 "Chaco Canyon: Archaeology and Archaologits" book. They all differ in the small details. Scope: Three reports from 1941 Report #1: Monuments of Chaco Canyon. 164 pp. Consists of photos of almost all the great houses of Chaco Canyon. 2 1/2 x 4 1/2" black and white photos were pasted, with what appears to be rubber cement, onto pages with a typed caption. One photo per page. In some cases the photos have come detached. Divided into 14 sections. Report #2: The Rock Art of Chaco Canyon. 54 pp. Consists of 1) a 3-page dot matrix memo from Sowers to the Chaco superintendent regarding his report on the petroglyphs of the Chaco area. Dated March 31, 1986. Memo describes the survey of the north side of the canyon in 1941, from the northwestern boundary of Chaco Canyon National Monument. 2) Ink sketches of petroglyphs with black & white prints and typed captions. pp 4-54. Report #3: Threatening Rock. 14 pp. Consists of 1) a 2-page dot-matrix printer memo from Sowers to the Chaco superintendent regarding his report on Threatening Rock at Pueblo Bonito. Dated March 31, 1986. Describes the fall of the rock in 1941. 2) Black & white prints on 3 hole-punched paper with typed captions of Threatening Rock post-fall. pp 3-14. Page 13 shows before and after photos of the east section of Pueblo Bonito taken from the same perspective. Arrangement: An effort has been made to match images and negative numbers. The images that are numbered in the reports have either matching extra prints and/or a photocard and/or a safety negative and interpositive. Collection/Series: 0052/002 Series Title: SERIES II: Photographs Accession: CHCU-00637 Catalog Nbr: CHCU 68341 Inclusive Dates: 1941-1946 Bulk Dates: History: The park or the Chaco Center originally received nitrate negatives from Ted Sowers. By the 1990s, these were stored in Santa Fe. During the 2002 reformatting process, Santa Fe cataloged the nitrates, prior to NEDCC making safety negatives and interpositives. The safety negatives and interpositives were transferred to the park and are part of this subseries. The original nitrates have been transferred to WACC for long-term storage or destruction. Someone, presumably Sowers, divided the images into groups. The groups are (primarily) as a follows: Group A: Pueblo Pintado; Group 1: Pueblo Bonito; Group 2: Petroglyphs (includes prints of El Morro inscriptions and Gran Quivira architecture); Group 3: Tsin Kletzin, Casa Rinconada; Group 4: Petroglyphs; Group 5: other greathouses in Chaco, Group 6: other greathouses, Group 7: Pueblo Bonito, Group 8: Pueblo Bonito, Group 9: Pueblo Bonito. Group 4 also includes images of personnel at Chaco Canyon in the 1940s. The nitrates (from Group A and Groups 3-9) were assigned park negative numbers by the Chaco Center, as were the photocards (all groups except Group 1). Group 1 exists only as 6.5" x 10" prints. We have negatives for many, but not all, images contained in the 3 reports Sowers also donated to the park. An effort has been made to match images and negative numbers. Scope: Prints, NPS Photocards, Safety Negatives, Interpositives Cross-referenced to images in the 3 reports (Subseries 001). Arrangement: By format. Safety negatives are in the negative collection; interpositives in the IP collection; photocards are stored with the Historic Photo Collection; extra prints with the reports and journals. As was usual, a variety of print types were made: small (up to 5x8") prints pasted onto NPS 10-30 photocards, extra 5x8" prints, 8x10" prints, and 10 x 6.5" prints. FOR MORE INFORMATION SEE HISTORY IN SERIES II DESCRIPTION. Scope: NPS Photocards, extra prints, various sizes. Prints are primarily copies of prints from Sowers' reports. Also includes prints from other SW sites: El Morro, Gran Quivira, Montezuma Castle, and Hovenweep, and a series of images of unidentified human skulls. These log books, numbered by Ted Sowers #9-16, cover his tenure as custodian/ superintendent of Chaco Canyon NM. The hand-written journals cover the period from December 1, 1944, when Sowers was stationed at Tumacacori NM through March 31, 1947, when he had moved on to Great Sand Dune NM. There are entries for each day, including his lieu days. One journal, #15, has a hand-copied duplicate for a portion of the entries. The journals have been copied onto archival paper.
