Use Statistics Canada’s GeoSearch tool to locate your area of interest: Statistics Canada (http://www.statcan.gc.ca) → Select English → Browse by Key Resource → Census Program → Geography → Maps → GeoSearch → Select Year Note: Refresh the page if the top menu with the ‘Browse by Key Resource’ tab does not appear

In GeoSearch, enter in the city or postal code you are researching under ‘Place name or postal code’ o To find Census Tract information, the Census Metropolitan Area (CMA) must be selected

Select ‘Census Tracts (CT)’ in ‘Additional geographic area’ located in the bottom right corner

Under ‘Display’: o Select ‘Interactive Legend’ and turn on the ‘CT’ labels o Select ‘Hover’

Use to zoom in on the map until you locate the area you are interested in researching

Click on the area and record the Census Tract geographic identification code (Geo. ID)

2. Find Census data for the Census Tract:

Use Statistics Canada’s GeoSearch tool after locating your area of interest: • Click on your area of interest on the map • Locate ‘Data products’ at the bottom of the page • Select the hyperlink under ‘Title’ to open the data tables you are interested in viewing

OR

Use Statistics Canada’s Census Profile tool after locating your area of interest: Statistics Canada (http://www.statcan.gc.ca) → Select English → Browse by Key Resource → Census Program → Data Products → Census Profile → Search Note: Refresh the page if the top menu with the ‘Browse by Key Resource’ tab does not appear

• Select ‘Geographic Code' • Enter the geographic code for the Census Tract and click ‘Search’ • On next page, click on displayed Census Tract to view Census Profile Note: The Census Tract description is 6 digits long (0000.00), but the geographic code entered must be 9 digits long and include the CMA geographic code before the 6-digit Census Tract geographic code

• Example: London CMA code = 555 London CT code = 0022.00 CMA code + CT code = 5550022.00 Geographic code = 5550022.00 *Don’t forget the dot!

Using SimplyAnalytics, locate the area of interest: Fanshawe Library (http://www.fanshawelibrary.com) → Databases A-Z → SimplyAnalytics → Sign in using your FOL username and password Note: If you would like to save any maps or reports you must create a free personal account in SimplyAnalytics after signing in with your FOL username and password instead of using the guest account Create a new map

o Select ‘New Project’ at the top of the page o Enter in the city you are researching and click on ‘Next’ o Select any ‘seed’ variables to be included in the project and click on ‘Create Project’

Use the top menu to adjust the map settings o Change what variables are visible on the map o New variables can be added to the map using the categories in the menu on the right o In the ‘By’ drop down menu select ‘Census Tracts’

Zoom in on the map until you locate the area you are interested in researching and select the icon

Click on the Census Tract of interest and ‘Add Location to Project’ o This number will not include the CMA code (0000.00)

2. Find Census data for the Census Tract:

Using SimplyAnalytics, locate Census variables of interest: Fanshawe Library (http://www.fanshawelibrary.com/) → Databases A-Z → SimplyAnalytics → Sign in using your FOL username and password • After creating a map, create a new report

o Click on the icon at the top of the ‘Comparison Report’ box and select edit to change the location to the Census Tract

• Use the menu on the right to select any variable of interest Use the ‘Browse By’ dropdown menu to select variables by category or dataset Some datasets will allow users to select multiple variables, while other datasets will only

allow one variable to be selected
