Types of AwardsFederal, State, & Private Awards Federal Awards:

A federal grant is an award of financial assistance from a federal agency to a recipient.

Carry out a broader public purpose or economic stimulation.

Guided by political agenda. Has strict, formal guidelines and procedures for

applying for and administering grants. Applications are peer reviewed for merit and

technical aspects. You will receive their comments. Budgets can change when federal priorities change.

Types of Awards Federal Awards

Categorical grants may be spent only for narrowly defined purposes, and recipients often must match a portion of the federal funds from their own funds. Project grants are grants given by the government to

fund research or outreach projects. An individual must have certain qualifications before applying for such a grant and the normal duration for project grants is three years.

Formula grants provide funds as dictated by a law. Block grants are large grants provided from the

federal government to state or local governments for use in a general purpose.

Earmark grants are explicitly specified in appropriations of the U.S. Congress. They are not competitively awarded.

Page 6: FINDING GRANT OPPORTUNITIES

Types of Awards How do they keep track of Federal grant programs?

Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance (CFDA) The CFDA is a government-wide compendium of Federal

programs, projects, services, and activities that provide assistance or benefits to the American public.

Now published electronically on-line at http://www.cfda.gov The database is searchable and uses a ##.### numbering

schema. Programs are indexed by federal government agency.

Ex. 10.### is the US Department of Agriculture Ex. 93.### is the US Department of Health and Human

Services

The CFDA is useful for when you want to find the authorization for the grant opportunity you’re applying for, and Uses and Use Restrictions.

UW-Extension is required to record the CFDA#s of their federal grants.

A private grant is an award of financial assistance from a private non-profit organizations such as foundations, not-for-profit corporations or charitable trusts.

Stable and long-term priorities. Shorter proposals in page length. Often have poorly defined guidelines and procedures

for applying for and administering grants. Awards are limited to organizations in a specific

geographical area. Proposals are often reviewed continuously or multiple

times per year by a board or staff members. Are dependent on private funds and donations.

Funder DatabasesYou can also go directly to the Funder’s database to review their grant opportunities.

For example, the next slide is the US Environmental Protection Agency’s Grants and Other Funding Opportunities website.
