Objectives
SWBAT Explain how living things are organized for study.

Key Points1. To Study the diversity of life, biologists use a classification system to name organisms and group them in a logical manner.
2. In binomial nomenclature, each species is assigned a two part scientific name.
3. Linnaeus's Hierarchical system of classification includes 7 levels. They are from smallest to largest and include species, genus, family, order, class, phylum, kingdom.

Major Vocabulary
Taxonomy : discipline of classifying organisms and assigning each organism a
universally accepted name.
Binomial Nomenclature : classification system in which each species is assigned a 2
part scientific name.
Taxon : group or level of organization into which organisms can be classified.

Why do we classify???
When you think of a fish, what characteristics do you think of???
FinsGills
Streamline shapeBones
Biologists needed to attempt to give order to the vast number of organisms on earth. This is
called Taxonomy.

Scientific NamesThere is a problem with only naming organisms
by their common names.
What is the name of this organism?
Cougar
Puma
Panther
Mountain Lion
Why is this a problem???

Binomial Nomenclature
Common Name : Grizzly Bear
Scientific Name : Ursus arctos
Rule for Binomial Nomenclature:
First name: Genus and is always Capitalized.
Second name: Species and is not capitalized.

Binomial Nomenclature
Common Name : Grizzly Bear
Scientific Name : Ursus arctosCommon Name : Polar BearScientific Name : Ursus maritimus
Do Ursus arctos and Ursus maritimus belong to the same species or same genus?
Which group, genus or species is most inclusive?

Linnaeus’s System of
ClassificationOrganisms are grouped by more than 2 name.
Every organisms actually has 7 names!!!
Each name represents a different level of organization, or taxon.
