Bridging to University Nursing

Periodicals Periodicals are publications that are issued on Publications that are issued on a regular basis Articles in them provide current and focused information Newspapers, magazines and journals are examples of types of periodicals Periodicals are available in both print and electronic format (in the Library databases))

Journal Articles:

• Intended for scholars/professionals • Usually written by an expert in the field • Often report on original research • Require specialized knowledge and

vocabulary • Documented – include citations and a

bibliography of previous articles, books on the topic by other authors

• Are peer reviewed

Peer reviewed

• Also called refereed or academic or scholarly

• A committee of scholars/professionals must approve the quality of the article before it is published in the journal

Peer review helps to establish a journal as a trusted source of information

Trade Publications

• Intended for practitioners of a profession • Usually written by practitioners and

professional writers. They are not always signed by the author.

• Advertisements - industry related • Very few, if any citations • Will contain technical or specialized language

used in the profession • Not considered scholarly

scholarly articles for your assignments.

• Nursing trade periodicals can be useful in getting an overview of a topic, but they are not scholarly.

• If you need help in determining what is scholarly, ask your professor or library staff.
