My grandfather was a farmer.

He couldn’t read or write.

Fascinated by publishing

Page 20: Finding your courage

First job at a newspaper.

Page 21: Finding your courage

Things were moving to the web.

Page 22: Finding your courage

I worked really hard, teaching myself.

Page 23: Finding your courage
Page 24: Finding your courage

I became a software engineer!

Page 25: Finding your courage

All the while, I had a vague dream...

Page 26: Finding your courage
Page 27: Finding your courage

Reasons not to move there:

Page 28: Finding your courage

I was “settled.”

Page 29: Finding your courage

I knew no one there.

Page 30: Finding your courage

My whole family lived in North Carolina.

Page 31: Finding your courage

I had little money and SF is expensive.

Page 32: Finding your courage

My own mother didn’t want me to move.

Page 33: Finding your courage

So, lots of reasons not to do it.

There always are.

Page 34: Finding your courage

One reason to do it:I wanted to do it.

Page 35: Finding your courage

So I just did it.

(That was 13 years ago!)

Page 36: Finding your courage

It was difficult.

Page 37: Finding your courage

I almost went bankrupt.

Page 38: Finding your courage

It was totally worth it.

Page 39: Finding your courage

That decision to move changed my life.

That’s just one story.

I also looked for wisdom from people I admire on the

subject of courage.

Page 52: Finding your courage

What I learned.

Page 53: Finding your courage

Courage comes from doing.

Page 54: Finding your courage

You get [courage] by courageous acts. It's like you learn to swim by swimming.

— Mary Daly

Page 55: Finding your courage

Take the leap!

"Start Anywhere." You will never have enough time, or training, or money, or

items to sell to feel like you are ready to start.— jennybuttons (Etsy Seller)

Page 57: Finding your courage

Once you start, you have to persist.

Page 58: Finding your courage

Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like hard work.

— Thomas Edison

Page 59: Finding your courage

[Persistence] is the key to success, because no one will be as committed to your dream as you. Every single day, minute by minute, you have to step forward, put yourself out there, and be courageous.

Page 60: Finding your courage

Recognize that there’s no failure.

Page 61: Finding your courage

I have not failed 10,000 times. I have not failed once.

I have succeeded in proving that those 10,000 ways will not work.

When I have eliminated the ways that will not work, I will find the way that will work.

— Thomas Edison

Page 62: Finding your courage

You can only learn from your mistakes and when you're not making mistakes, enjoy the serendipity when it comes your way.

Get support from your community.

Page 64: Finding your courage

sometimes you just need someone to believe in you to find the courage in yourself to overcome your fears.

Page 65: Finding your courage
Page 66: Finding your courage

...but be prepared to go your own way!

Page 67: Finding your courage

I did hear from discouraging or well-meaning people that I did not know what I was doing, which was true enough but I figure I'd learn along the way.

I heard there was no money in art, and the funniest, to me, anyway, was that the name I pick out for my shop was too foreign, that someone might think I'm a terrorist.

I kept going because it felt right.— MajafariDesigns

Listen to your truest self.

Page 69: Finding your courage

Courage. . . . came from a burning desire to make our own path.

When in doubt, go with your heart.

Page 71: Finding your courage

I’m not perfect, I’m perfectly myself.

Page 72: Finding your courage

That’s what courage is all about.

Page 73: Finding your courage

Start.

Persist.

Make mistakes.

Be true to yourself.

Page 74: Finding your courage

Finding your courage is really finding your heart.

Page 75: Finding your courage

Good luck in your journey.

Thank you.
