100 years ago, the Xinhai Revolution began in Wuchang. It was followed by a series of changes in various aspects of life in China. What happened to music? In preparing for an outline of music in China a century ago, there were many hurdles to overcome. Firstly, related materials had not been kept in good order, and it was hard to find enough music recordings to make a representative broadcast. Fortunately, with the help of a number of experts and scholars, we are finally able to present to you a series of four programmes entitled 1911 - Music Before and After the Revolution (in Cantonese). Special thanks goes to members of the Cantacore Society who came in to our studio to record music which, up to that point, had only been available in print. To tie in with the centenary, we also bring to you the Hong Kong’s world premiere of the Chinese orchestra version of Huang Ruo’s opera Dr. Sun Yat-sen.

Going even further back in time, we note that 200 years ago, Franz Liszt was born (1811-1886). In terms of versatility, he was the superstar of his time:

- He was a fabulous pianist who drew an exciting crowd everywhere he went.

- He was a prolific composer, recordings of merely his piano works (for piano solo and piano and orchestra), takes up a massive space of almost 100 CDs and this doesn’t even touch his symphonic output, art songs, organ works and oratorios.

- He was a forerunner. He created the genre of the symphonic poem, and although he was not the first one to use thematic transformation technique, he perfected it. Interestingly, when he first explored atonality, Schoenberg (1874-1951) was still a kid!

- He was an inspiring teacher. His students included big names such as Hans von Bülow and Carl Tausig.

- He was an influential music critic and writer whose works include a biography of Chopin.

In the two-month series – Liszt Superstar (in Cantonese), pianist and veteran arts administrator So Hau-leung brings you a range of different works by the great Hungarian master. To tie in with the bicentenary, Tuesdays’ Live on 4 will include works mostly written by Liszt.

Finally, on the subject of anniversary, we invite you to tune in to Live on 4 on 7 Oct for the New York Philharmonic’s performance last month of Mahler’s Resurrection Symphony to commemorate the 10th Anniversary of 911.

一百年前的10月,辛亥革命在武昌爆發,隨之而來的,是在各領域上的變化。音樂方面有甚麼變化呢?在那些日子中,神州大地上響起的,是甚麼音樂呢?革命有為中國帶來新的作品、曲種和演繹手法嗎?在準備有關特備節目的過程中,我們遇到一定難度。在那個大時代中,相關資料保存得頗為散亂,而音樂錄音就更加難求。幸好,我們得到多位專家和學者的支持,終於能夠在本月,推出一連四集的辛亥前後的舊韻新聲。在此也要多謝雅歌合唱團的成員,他們專程來到香港電台為我們示範演唱那些極少錄音的作品。此外為配合辛亥百週年,第四台亦會播出在香港作世界首演的大型新創作歌劇中山‧逸仙中樂版。

二百年前的10月,李斯特出生。若要數音樂史上的萬能泰斗,我會以他為首選:

— 他是一位炙手可熱的鋼琴家,所到之處,常常引起哄動。

— 他是多產作曲家,單是鋼琴獨奏和鋼琴與樂隊的作品的全集,就差不多有一百張CD,另外還有大量管弦樂、藝術歌曲、管風琴和神劇作品,不計其數。

— 他是先導者,是第一位寫交響詩的作曲家;雖然「主題變形」 (thematic transformation)手法並非由他首創,但在他手上被發展得淋漓盡致,更影響深遠;而當他嘗試寫「無調」音樂時,荀伯克還只是一個小孩子呢!

— 他是桃李滿門的老師,傑出音樂家如畢羅和鋼琴家陶西格都出於他的門下。

— 他是音樂評論家和作家,大量著作中包括為他的好友蕭邦而寫的別傳。

一生之中能在這麼多方面有如此傑出的成就,李斯特的才華實在令人驚嘆,亦有待我們去發掘。資深演藝行政人員兼鋼琴家蘇孝良會一連兩個月,在巨星李斯特中與你分享這位匈牙利音樂奇才是如何出類拔萃,多才多藝,其成就是如何的劃時代。此外,逢星期二播出的第四台音樂會中,也會選播多套李斯特的精彩作品。

最後,提到週年紀念,紐約愛樂剛以馬勒的復活交響曲來紀念911十週年,誠意邀請你收聽10月7日晚上播出的第四台音樂會。

After rounds of auditions, 13 Young Music Makers have been chosen. They were presented for the first time at a press launch, where they shared their love of music and showcased their talents for the media. Here is a glimpse of the day:

林: 可談談你跟歌劇《中山‧逸仙》的淵源嗎?

莫: 先說一下製作原因,故事早於兩三年前構思,我跟香港歌劇院主席呂慧瑜都認為需要有一套屬於我們,而且可以流傳下去的歌劇,因為八年來我們一直演出的,都是別人的經典歌劇,所以今年是時候推出一部由香港歌劇院委約創作的歌劇。即使以後我不再是總監,歌劇院都應擁有屬於自己的劇目。再加上今年是辛亥革命百週年紀念,孫中山先生是中山人,而他的革命思維基本上在香港學醫時已形成,跟香港、廣東一帶地區也非常有緣,所以覺得這個故事題材很適合。

另外,很有趣的一點,是我也走過他當時行過的路:夏威夷—美國—香港,所以特別有感受。我於是跟編劇莊梅岩和作曲家黃若商討,大家也不謀而合,認為這是一個很好的題材。其中莊小姐編寫劇本的過程,由開始我已參與,而歌劇內容則集中在愛情。

林: 寫情是莊梅岩的強項!

莫: 是的。其實革命領導者不只有風光偉大的一面,也擁有愛情。所以故事主要講述孫中山怎樣愛上宋慶齡,怎樣脫離封建的一夫多妻制、跟原配夫人離婚後才迎娶宋慶齡,情節十分感人。而音樂上的風格充滿現代特色,黃若認為應該多利用中國元素創作本地歌劇。

為配合劇情,其中有些旋律以南音唱腔組成,音樂亦故意同時選用和聲及非和聲的配樂,是一個以美聲唱法演繹的現代歌劇。此外,是次演出有兩個音樂版本,交響樂版將在北京大劇院作世界首演,由李心草指揮;而在香港上演的中樂版,由香港中樂團演出、閻惠昌總監指揮,我也很期待聽到中樂版的 效果。

林: 我相信兩個版本的音樂大致相同,只是配器法有所分別。

莫: 對,由於所有歌劇表演都不使用擴音器,部分彈撥樂器如箏、阮,可能需要先協調一下樂器的音量,才能在演出中作獨奏。

林: 你同時擔任幕前(演孫中山)和幕後(監製)的重要工作。身為男主角,演唱交響樂和中樂兩個版本,聲音運用可有不同?

莫: 直至今天訪問前我仍在摸索,因為這齣歌劇利用傳統意大利美聲唱法(bel canto)寫作,但當中卻有很多中國旋律。以普通話演唱,必須調整唱腔,才有最好的效果,希望在10月演出前我能找到最適合的唱法。在廿五年的歌劇生涯,這是我第三次用普通話演唱,對我是個大挑戰。

林: 那麼中、西樂版本,你比較期待哪一個?

莫: 兩個都期待,因為兩個版本風格完全不一樣。但當我在西方國家介紹《中山‧逸仙》,他們反而更期待中樂版,因為從未欣賞過。

林: 是次佈景製作有什麼特別之處? 

莫: 服裝和佈景分別由本地及北京頂尖設計師負責,是古典與現代的結合,都是一流的製作,所以各位切勿錯過。

鴉片戰爭後,中國傳統音樂的新發展

鴉片戰爭後的洋務運動,令交通運輸日益改善,加上城市劇院的建立,加

速了民間音樂的發展和交流,如反映社會現實的「時調小曲」遍佈各地、

北方的「北京單弦」、「山東大鼓」和「京韵大鼓」流傳至南方,而地方

戲曲也逐步形成了昆腔、高腔、梆子、皮黃四大聲腔系統的三百多種劇

種。就京劇而言,清末時西方話劇傳入,一種新的藝術形式「文明戲」在

各大城市興起,影響了「戲曲改良運動」。及至辛亥革命後,以梅蘭芳、

尚小雲、荀慧生和程硯秋等四大名旦,豐富和改革了旦角的舞台表演藝

術,尤其是梅蘭芳,更實現了王瑤卿等前輩提出發展「花衫」,創造了許

多以旦角為主的「古裝新戲」。器樂方面,則出現了多個重要的民樂演奏

組織,如上海的「文明雅集」、濟南的「德音琴社」,以至1920年的「大

同樂會」,於整理和改革中國傳統器樂的工作上有不少的貢獻。

傳�士來華的影響

西方傳�士,早如明朝的利瑪竇、十九世紀初的馬禮遜,以至1870

年代的李提摩太夫婦,除了來華傳道外,也把西方音樂和音樂�育

模式帶來中國。為迎合中國文化,馬禮遜編寫《養心神詩》時,按

蘇格蘭格律詩譯成散文,再由華人改成韻文,以日內瓦詩篇集的第

100首(Old Hundredth)為調;而太平天國期間,在拜上帝�崇拜中頌

唱的《三一頌》也是用日內瓦詩篇集的第100首為調,不過以中樂伴

奏。李提摩太夫婦在山西時,以中國的工尺譜�授音樂。及至1901

年,女傳�士亮樂月在《中國嗓音之訓練》中,提到中國學生已不

再只能演出以五聲音階為主的齊唱曲,還能演繹海頓、莫扎特的合

唱作品。隨着�會學校音樂水平的提高,上海、福州等海港城市以至

內陸城市均有大型的合唱節,如韓德爾的《彌賽亞》和孟德爾遜的

《以利亞》分別於1916和1917年,在湖北省的牯嶺上演。

袁世凱酷愛音樂,早於清末出任山東巡撫時已組織西式樂隊。

一百年前的一場革命,改寫了中華民族的命運;一班熱血青年,憑着無比的毅力,推

翻了滿清政權,在這片土地上建立了第一個共和國。在鴉片戰爭後,以慈禧太后為首的政權,以「師

夷之長技以制夷」,推行一系列的洋務運動;但積弱多年,加上內有太平天國和義和團的騷亂,外有

列強步步進逼,以致民怨沸騰。1911年5月,朝廷推出的兩項新政─皇族內閣及鐵路國有,更令清政

府盡失民心。同年10月10日武昌起義的成功,加上袁世凱倒戈,達成南北議和,中華民國在1912年於

南京成立,由孫中山擔任臨時大總統;「辛亥革命」揭開了中國歷史的新篇章,匯聚了萬千人民的力

量和夢想,大家盼望透過轉變,尋找新出路;政治如是,音樂也如是。

學堂樂歌

以梁啟超為代表的維新派,積極建立新式學堂,透過音樂�

育,喚起民眾的愛國情緒,而學堂樂歌便成為宣揚「富國強

兵」的工具。學堂樂歌以西方的簡譜或五線譜記載,大多採用

日本歌曲曲調進行填詞,成為供學生集體詠唱的齊唱曲,如秋

瑾的《勉女權》便配上日本歌曲《風車》的旋律。後來,學堂

樂歌逐漸改以歐美的歌曲進行填詞,如沈心工的《竹馬》的旋

律是來自華格納的《婚禮進行曲》,而李叔同的《送別》則根

據美國民謠寫成。至1920年代,學堂樂歌的發展更趨成熟,由

中國人作曲和作詞的歌曲也愈來愈多,且成為中國藝術歌曲的

前哨,趙元任於1926年創作的《�我如何不想他》便是一例。

孫中山身處地的音樂國父孫中山宣揚革命信息時,曾活躍於中國、香港和日本,這

三地皆有其獨特的音樂發展。在辛亥革命中,除孫中山外,袁

世凱在政治和音樂上也扮演了一個重要的角色。袁世凱在天津

小站練兵時,採納德藉顧問高斯達的建議,在軍中廢除中國樂

器,改用西方銅管樂器,招收數十人,組成中國第一隊軍樂

隊。孫中山在1883年到香港讀書,以至1923年,造訪香港大

學,並在大禮堂(即陸佑堂)發表歷史性的演講,國父與香港有

不解之緣;而當時香港的音樂發展正處於萌芽期。早期的香港

學校音樂�育,由�會主理,當時鋼琴尚未普遍,通常採用脚

踏小風琴,頌唱簡單的聖詩。另外,國父流亡日本時,曾被稱

為「中山樵」,其後便慣稱為「孫中山」。當時日本在明治維

新後,深受西方影響;日本作曲家已能夠以西方音樂語言,創

作大型的作品,如山田耕筰在1921年所寫的交響曲。

準備這四集節目時,曾遇到不少困難,因為這段時期的音樂歷史

資料散亂,而且只有極少量的錄音。幸好,得到蔣慧民和雅謌合

唱團在百忙之中,抽空到香港電台灌錄歌曲,重現昔日音樂的

風采;另外,陳永華�授也借出大量的錄音,令音樂的問題得

以解決。這次更邀請到一眾嘉賓,如蔣慧民、陳永華、費明

儀、周光蓁、莫華倫、莊梅岩、陳敢權、辛偉強等,娓娓道出

他們的見解。

This year marked the centenary of the 1911 Revolution, which brought an end to the imperial rule in China. The changes occurred not only in politics, but also in music. In the programme series 1911 - Music Before and After the Revolution (in Cantonese), Jenny Lee, together with her guests, will discover the musical development in this significant time. You will also hear songs of that period, performed by the Cantacore Society under Chiang Wai-man, recently recorded at RTHK Studio 2.

巨星的誕生

二百年前的10月22日,李斯特 (Franz Liszt 1811-1866) 出生於匈牙

利的雷汀。他的父母與今天的家長一樣,對兒子百般栽培。李斯特也

不負所望,自幼已經聰明過人,七歲起隨父親習琴更是進步神速;才

兩年時間,已經在匈牙利舉行演奏會,技驚四座,之後更獲貴族的支

持,遷居納也納,隨當時歐洲享負盛名的鋼琴家車爾尼(Carl Czerny)

習琴,並隨沙利烈(Antonio Salieri,即傳說中莫扎特的對頭)學習作

曲。又過了兩年,李斯特在巴黎演奏,隨即應邀到歐洲多國演出,引

起轟動。雖然當時未有錄音或錄像,但只需閱讀有關他演出的文獻記

錄,或聽聽他之後幾十年創作的無數鋼琴曲,我們不難想像這位巨星

在琴鍵上風馳電掣、迷倒萬千樂迷的情景。

二百年後的今天,儘管樂壇已經有翻天覆地的變化,但李斯特那鋼琴

之王的地位卻未被動搖。今年,全球樂壇齊紀念李斯特出生二百年,

第四台邀請蘇孝良主持全新節目「巨星李斯特」。對從事幕後音樂行

政的行內人來說,蘇孝良是個熟悉的名字。他曾經是香港管弦樂團職

業化後的首位總經理,也是流行音樂圈的多位名星,包括梅艷芳的經

理人;但對資歷較深的古典樂迷來說,他也屬於幕前,早在七十年代

已經舉行多場鋼琴演奏會,也為香港電台主持古典音樂節目。李斯特

一直是蘇孝良的偶像,由他主持有關特輯,從不同角度介紹這位音樂

家和選播有關的精彩錄音,可說非常適合。

舞台上無可匹敵的鋼琴巨星、極具原創性的作曲家、十九世紀後半葉的樂壇�父、還有慈善家、情聖、神職人員⋯⋯ 李斯特的多重身份令他成為樂壇中一位傑出卻又難於定位,甚至被低估及誤解的傳奇人物。今年10月是這位奇才出生二百年的紀念,正是重新認識李斯特的好時機。

難於取捨

邀請蘇孝良「出山」,他的第一個反應是:「這個李斯特特輯可能長達半年!」的確,單數重

要的作品,李斯特的獨奏曲如匈牙利狂想曲、超技練習曲不可忽略;他極具原創性的交響詩

和交響曲不可不聽;鋼琴協奏曲和B小調奏鳴曲都是承先啟後之作,怎能不選?還有多首改編

曲、較冷門的歌曲、神劇、管風琴曲若今次不播,也不知何時才有機會介紹!李斯特的創作量

極豐富,即使走馬看花地選曲,內容之豐富也是極驚人的。

對李斯特這位二百年一遇的音樂巨星,蘇孝良提出更多有趣的主題,例如李斯特與當時樂壇多

位重要人物的互動關係,包括偶像小提琴家巴格尼尼、行家蕭邦和女婿華格納;李斯特如何用

音樂表現文學,甚至視覺藝術的意境;他如何早人一步,在十九世紀末創作無調性音樂,還有

入世一點的—他在舞台上的風采、他為人津津樂道(或詬病)的浪漫情史,以及他數以百計的出

色弟子,其中關係差不多觸及當時整個樂壇的人事脈絡!

是位虔誠的天主�徒,但在意識上卻與魔

鬼非常親近。他的性格是外向的,生活多

姿多彩、風流成性,也充滿表演慾。但另

一方面,他容易相處、善良慷慨,在歷史

上大概很難找到另一位願意貢獻如此多時

間、精力和金錢去扶助他人的藝術家了。

正所謂樹大招風,他在鋼琴演奏上無可比

擬,但在音樂創作上和生活風格上卻經常

招人話柄。他對樂壇貢獻良多,但晚年卻

並不快樂!」

A few weeks before winning the Tchaikovsky Competition, Daniil Trifonov was awarded the First Prize and Gold Medal at the 13th Arthur Rubinstein International Piano Master Competition, which took place in Tel Aviv. He was also the winner of 3rd Prize in the 16th International Fryderyk Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw (2010).

For more than fifty years, the International Tchaikovsky Competition has been regarded as one of the major events in the global music community, and as an outstanding opportunity for extraordinary young musicians to gain international recognition and establish their careers. In Russia, the event is considered one of the main competitions of the country.

The International Tchaikovsky Competition is held once every four years. The first, in 1958, embraced two disciplines: piano and violin. In 1962, a cello category was added, and the vocal division (with separate prizes for men and women) was introduced at the third competition in 1966.

Among the competition winners who have achieved worldwide recognition are pianists Vladimir Ashkenazy and Mikhail Pletnev; violinists Gidon Kremer and Victoria Mullova; cellists Antonio Meneses and Mario Brunello; and singers Evgeny Nesterenko and Elena Obraztsova.

An unprecedented number of applicants from almost 50 countries for this year’s 14th International Tchaikovsky Competition was evidence of the re-birth of this prestigious international music event. The considerable number of worldwide applications received was a clear reflection of the 2011 re-launch under the new management of Valery Gergiev, Chairman of the Organising Committee, and Richard Rodzinski, General Director of the Competition.

The competition saw applicants from New Zealand and Brazil, with non-European countries representing almost a third of applications. Asian countries comprised three out of the top five most popular countries - notably Japan, China and South Korea - the latter of which is the second most popular contributing country overall. Russia remained the strongest contributor, with the greatest number of overall candidates hailing from the competition’s home country.

In 2011, for the first time, the competition was presented simultaneously at halls in Moscow and St. Petersburg. Moscow hosted the piano and cello competitions, while St. Petersburg presented the violin and vocal competitions.

The Winner’s Gala Concert was recorded on 2 July in the Mariinsky Theatre, St. Petersburg, with the Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra conducted by Valery Gergiev. It will be broadcast on Radio 4 on 5 Oct (Part 1) and 12 Oct (Part 2) featuring:

Narek is a recipient of scholarships from the Mstislav Rostropovich Foundation and has performed throughout Europe and North America. As a result of receiving first prize at the Young Concert Artists International Auditions in 2008, he made his debut that year at Carnegie Hall’s Zankel Hall in New York and at the Kennedy Centre Terrace Theatre in Washington, D.C.

He is the grant-holder of the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation, Foundation ‘New Names’, laureate of the ‘Temirkanov’s Prize’ and laureate of ‘Prize of the President of Russia’.

He previously won the first prize and special prize for best performance of a Mozart Concerto at the 2010 Freiburg International Violin Competition in Germany. This year’s Nobel Peace Prize nominee, Daniel Barenboim, led a peace concert with his West-Eastern Divan Orchestra (WEDO) in Imjingak near Korea’s Demilitarized Zone on South Korea’s Independence Day, 15 August. During this tour in Seoul, the WEDO performed the Beethoven symphony cycle during its three-day concert, culminating in the magnificent Symphony No. 9 in D minor, ‘Choral’, at the Korean border. Four renowned Korean soloists were hand-picked by the 69–year old Maestro: soprano Sumi Jo, mezzo-soprano Lee Ah-Kyung, tenor Park Ji-Min, and bass Maurice Hamm. Three Korean choirs also joined in the concert.

Beethoven’s Symphony No.9, with its final movement ‘Ode to Joy’, was chosen to deliver a message of peace and humanity, hoping to encourage dialogue between the two Koreas, as Daniel Barenboim said in a video message prior to the concert.

WEDO, composed of about 100 young musicians from Israel, Palestine, and other Arab countries, was co-founded in 1999 by Daniel Barenboim and Edward Said, the late Palestinian literary scholar. The orchestra has performed in areas struck by political divide such as Ramallah and Palestine, as well as in the Gaza strip with members of other prominent orchestras.

The Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra (HKPO) welcomes Moscow-born violinist Igor Yuzefovich, Baltimore Symphony Orchestra’s Assistant Concertmaster since 2005, as its new Concertmaster.

Born in a musical family, Yuzefovich began his violin study at the age of five. He emigrated to the US in 1991 and continued his musical training at the Preparatory Division of the Peabody Institute and continued on to the Peabody Conservatory, where he obtained his Bachelor of Music degree and Graduate Performance Diploma. Yuzefovich has won numerous competitions. His concerts have taken him from Carnegie Hall in New York to the Cairo Opera House in Egypt. He has also performed in Canada, England, Scotland, Ireland, Russia, France, Israel, Jordan, and South Africa.

Yuzefovich is an active chamber musician. He is a member of the Russian Quartet and has led the group in winning the 1996 Fischoff International Chamber Music Competition. He is also a co-founder of the Monument Piano Trio in Baltimore.

Yuzefovich will officially take up his post with HKPO from 1 January 2012, but will appear as Guest Concertmaster for six weeks from September to December.

港樂新團長香港管弦樂團(港樂)決定,委任波爾的摩交響樂團助理

團長尤一弓為樂團新任團長。

尤一弓出生於莫斯科一個音樂家庭。他自五歲開始習

琴,1991年移居美國後在皮博迪音樂學院繼續深造,並

取得音樂學士及演奏文憑。尤一弓曾在多個比賽掄元,

演奏足跡遍及美加、英國、俄國、法國、以色列、約旦

及南非;由紐約卡奈基音樂廳至埃及開羅歌劇院都踏足

過。尤一弓亦熱愛室樂演奏。他是俄羅斯四重奏的成

員,並帶領組合贏得費沙確夫國際室樂比賽冠軍;他亦

是波爾的摩紀念碑鋼琴三重奏的創辦人。

尤一弓將於2012年1月正式履任港樂新團長一職,並將

於今年9至12月期間參與樂團共六星期的演出。

2 October : Puccini’s Suor Angelica and Gianni Schicchi

The idea of presenting three different one-act operas as a single evening’s entertainment had been with Giacomo Puccini (1858-1924) for a number of years since the 1900s. It was not until a decade later that he was able to create three short pieces under the generic title Il Trittico (The Triptych). All three works were given their world premiere in December 1918 at the Metropolitan Opera New York.

Suor Angelica (Sister Angelica) is a mystical story about a woman spending a life of atonement in a convent for the sin of having had an illegitimate child. Upon being told about the death of her young son, she drinks a poison and prays. A vision of the Virgin and a child appears as her soul is received into heaven. The music is poignantly lyrical with an unmistakable Puccinian touch, movingly interpreted by soprano Victoria de los Angeles and mezzo-soprano Fedora Barbieri. The Rome Opera Chorus and Orchestra are conducted by Tullio Serafin.

Gianni Schicchi is the story of the sharp-witted character who is helping a group of disinherited mourners to recover their share of deceased relative’s fortune. Schicchi simply impersonates the dead man and dictates a new will, leaving each relative a small portion, but the biggest share for himself. This is Puccini’s only true comedy, which many critics regard as his masterpiece. Baritone Leo Nucci sings the title role with soprano Mirella Freni portraying his daughter and tenor Roberto Alagna her fiancé. The orchestra gives excellent support under maestro Bruno Bartoletti.

The ‘New Will Reading’ scene in the premiere performance of Gianni Schicchi in 1918

The October listing for Sunday Opera consists of seven complete works, including a rare German comic opera containing Gustav Mahler’s unique contribution to operatic composition, and a special feature dedicated to the memory of an exceptionally gifted young tenor who passed away in September, aged 43.

9 October : Puccini’s Il Tabarro and La Rondine

The dark melodramatic thriller Il Tabarro (The Cloak) was the first of the Il Trittco operas. Giorgetta, young wife of the barge-owner Michele, is in love with the young stevedore Luigi. They meet on the barge by the Seine at night, after Michele has retired to sleep. This night, Michele stays on the deck and he lights a pipe. Luigi mistakes the match-light as Giorgetta’s usual signal for him to appear. Michele throttles him and hides the body under his cloak. When his wife comes on to the deck, he opens his cloak and forces her face upon her lover’s corpse.

Our recording features baritone Carlo Guelfi as Michele, soprano Maria Guleghina as Giorgetta, and tenor Neil Shikoff as Luigi. Antonio Pappano conducts the London Voices and the London Symphony Orchestra.

La Rondine (The Swallow) was commissioned as an operetta by a Viennese publisher in 1912, but was completed only after the First World War, by which time the situation in Europe had changed drastically, making it necessary for Puccini to refashion the work into a light lyric opera. Magda is a rich banker’s mistress. She falls in love with young Ruggero and runs away with him for an idyllic life in the country. When Ruggero’s parents give consent for them to marry, Magda tells him the truth: She is a courtesan and cannot be his bride. Sadly, like a swallow, she returns to her protector in Paris.

Ruggero and Magda are sung by the celebrated then-husband-wife team, tenor Roberto Alagna and soprano Angela Gheorghiu. The London Voices and London Symphony Orchestra perform under the baton of Antonio Pappano.

16 October : Weber / Mahler’s Die drei Pintos

Carl Maria von Weber (1786-1826) began to compose the music for the three-act comedy Die drei Pintos (The Three Pintos) in 1821, but left it unfinished at his death. In 1886, the young conductor at the Leipzig Stadttheater, Gustav Mahler (1860-1911), was approached by Weber’s grandson and became keenly interested in completing the unfinished work. He took over the fragmentary manuscript, orchestrated the existing music in accordance with Weber’s wishes, and, making use of Weber’s themes and motifs, composed a large amount of new music (nearly two-thirds) to fill up the missing parts.

The completed work was premiered in Leipzig in January 1888 with Mahler conducting. This was the only occasion of the great symphonist venturing into the field of opera as composer, though as opera conductor, Mahler was at the top of the world in his position as Director Absolute of the Vienna State Opera and later the Metropolitan Opera of New York.

Die drei Pintos tells the story of Don Pinto de Fonseca and the complicated intrigues involving his two imposters and his promised bride, who is eventually won by one of the impostors. We present a rare live recording made during performances at the 2009 Wexford Festival, featuring bass Alessandro Svab, soprano Barbara Zechmeister, and tenor Peter Furlong. Paolo Arrivaberi is the conductor.

We offer this programme to commemorate the centenary of Gustav Mahler’s death.

the queen to safety in France. At news of his loss, the bride loses her mind and expresses her grief in a moving mad scene. In the end the couple are united and peace is restored.

The Paris première in 1835 was a great success, and 17 performances were given in its first season. The opera was then staged in the major capitals of Europe to enthusiastic audiences. Our recording boasts of a magnificent cast led by diva Beverly Sills and tenor Nicolai Gedda. Julius Rudel conducts the Ambrosian Opera Chorus and the London Philharmonic Orchestra.

30 October : Verdi’s Il Trovatore

Our last programme of this month is offered as a tribute to one of the most gifted operatic tenors of the new generation, Salvatore Licitra, who died on 5 September as the result of a severe scooter accident, at the age of 43.

Il Trovatore (The Troubadour) is a powerful musical melodrama by Giuseppe Verdi (1813-1901), created in his early maturity. The libretto by Salvatore Cammarano has often been criticized as confusing and uninspiring, but Verdi’s music is of a very high order, especially in its capacity to dramatize characters and situations and raise the quality of the whole opera above the level of a dire tale of jealousy and revenge.

Each of the principals is assigned at least one great solo scene, with the hero, his beloved Leonora, and his gypsy foster mother being given the most beautiful and effective passages.

A gypsy woman, intent on avenging the death of her mother, has abducted the infant son of her enemy. The boy grows up as Manrico, leader of the rebel forces fighting against the powerful Count di Luna. The two opponents, without themselves knowing it, are, in fact, brothers. They both love Leonora but the lady chooses to follow Manrico, and the ensuing battler results in the lovers’ death in captivity.

23 October : Bellini’s I Puritani

Vincenzo Bellini (1801-1835) is considered by many the greatest exponent of bel canto opera, a musical style that emphasizes beauty of voice and virtuosity. He is admired for his finely-spun melodies, subtly supported by extended harmony and fluid orchestral accompaniment. The gentle flow of his delicate lines exercised an important influence on many major composers, most notably Chopin in his nocturnes and other lyrical pieces.

In his short life, Bellini composed 11 operas. I Puritani (The Puritans) was his last work, containing pages of unsurpassed lyrical beauty. The action takes place in England during the civil war between the Puritan supporters of Cromwell and the Stuarts, the Royalists. Elvira, daughter of a Puritan commander, is betrothed to Arturo, a Royalist, who disappears on their wedding day on a secret mission to escort

也許,你在學生時期也有過這樣的經歷:在眾老師當中有一位是你

特別敬佩的,可能是因為喜歡他(她)所�的科目,又可能是因為他

學識淵博,又或者是他講學方式深入淺出、井然有序,令人容易領

悟⋯⋯我真幸運,在工作的時期,也能遇到這樣一位良師──鄭延

益老師。

我與鄭老師的合作,最初是從「馬仔」做起的。那時我初入第四

台,其中的工作是當「鐳射唱片室」的助理(除了我以外,還有楊

以芬)。我們負責聯絡樂評,約定錄音時間,把錄音室預訂好。錄

音過後,還需要剪輯有關聲音片段。鄭老師就是其中一位樂評。後

來,我主持第二代的「鐳射唱片室」,增設了比較版本的環節,每

次和鄭老師談論小提琴的演奏版本,都談得過癮。後來我們仍經常

合作,他曾多次擔任節目「演繹縱橫談」的嘉賓主持,我也是他個

人主持的幾個特輯如「小提琴藝術的欣賞」的節目監製。

從不「NG」

鄭老師主持節目,從不預備講稿,也從不「NG」,所講的內容精

警,很有見地,也鋪排得宜。除了偶然說多了「呢個」或「噤呀」

需要剪掉,其他全不需要剪輯!他另外的一大特色是說話聲如隆

鐘,鏗鏘有力(他曾告訴我他是練氣功的,而且又是上海人)。我

在錄音室裏雖然隔著玻璃,但感覺就如在課堂裡聽著�授講解、給

迷住了!事隔十多年,我還能清楚記得他好幾則�導:

「你知道Kriesler除了拉琴棒,還有甚麼成功之處?就是他爸爸要

他接受普通�育,這對他的發展,有極正面的影響。」

「如果一百年才有像 Heifetz 這樣的大師出現,那麼如Hassid 這樣

的奇才,要二百年才有一個!」

「Midori灌錄的Encore是值得推介的。她的演奏很有東方人獨有的

幼細。」

最愛白飯魚、煎蛋和桂花魚

當時,鄭老師都是在早上錄音。工作過後,我們都有個習慣,就是

到港台的飯堂吃午飯。鄭老師最愛吃的是白飯魚煎蛋和蒸桂花魚。

他不止一次的說:「你們飯堂的菜真的不比其他大酒樓遜色!」。

午飯過後,他總會拿出煙斗來,「飯後一口煙,勝過做神仙」。鄭

老師一邊吸煙、一邊就會娓娓道來不同的故事,例如他小時候在新

加坡長大,首次現場聽到樂隊奏出巴赫的觸技曲與賦格曲是如何震

撼,又或者是他與各音樂家會面時的精彩情況。

還記得有一次飯敍,我很惆悵的跟他說:「鄭老師,我很緊

張,Amy(當時第四台台長鄺思燕)跟我說,要我主持一個新的清

談節目,要與音樂文化有關的。怎麼辦,我怕做不好。」鄭老師施

施然的回答道:「唉呀,怕甚麼?有甚麼新事情,都應該欣然嘗

試。」對於作為金牛座、極怕改變的我,這是一生受用的忠告!

如果鄭老師還健在的話,我想我還有很多音樂上和人生上的問題要

向他請�。但想到他能在另一個國度與他敬佩的大師,如Heifetz,

Kreisler, David Oistrakh 等互相交流切磋,那可是另一番熱鬧

光景!

古語有云:「絲不如竹,竹不如肉」,就是說既然演奏音樂的目的是抒發情感,

那麼產生音樂的媒界越是接近我們的心靈,那就愈能表達出我們的本性;因此說

拉弦樂器的不及吹管樂器,吹管樂器又不及親口吟唱。當然,我們都知道,不同

種類的樂器其實是各有特色,各擅勝長,都是值得欣賞。而吹管,尤其是木管

樂,這種發聲方法以至聲音特質都最接近人聲的樂器,就更獨具魅力。

說木管樂接近人聲,又的確有其學理根據。人類發出聲音,靠的是空氣帶動聲帶

震動,或是空氣在聲帶間旋動而產生(那就是所謂假聲)。回顧木管樂器的發聲原

理,正正是以簧片震動或是在吹嘴旋動而發出聲音!

長笛和短笛我很喜歡傳統上以「家族」來命名西方樂器的分類,因為對我而

言,每一件樂器都有著人一般的個性。說說木管家族的成員。長笛

與短笛是兩姊妹。姊姊高貴大方,有著天使般的聲音。聽聽德布西

《牧神之午後序曲》一開始的長笛獨奏,作曲家原意是模仿牧神手

上的排簫,但當圓潤笛聲奏出那充滿神秘感的異國旋律,始終流露

出一份成熟女性的嬌美動態,也許這正好為了表達牧神心底潛藏的

欲望,以及預示了之後與仙女嬉遊的情境吧?

與之相反,短笛給人的感覺是一個佻皮的小女孩,愛玩且有無限精

力,把大人們逗樂,卻又筋疲力竭!還記得看狄信湯馬士(Michael

Tilson Thomas)一套介紹柴可夫斯基第四交響曲的紀錄片,當中短

笛手就不斷強調第三樂章如何為她帶來巨大壓力:全首交響曲奏幾

句,稍有差池等於整晚心機白費了。的確,短笛的亮相機會比起長

笛少得多,但全屬不鳴則已,一鳴驚人。同是柴可夫斯基,《胡桃

鉗子》的「中國舞」就靠短笛添上一份靈巧,而蘇沙《永遠的星條

旗》中對位樂段的短笛主奏,又把音樂變成生氣勃勃!雙簧管和巴松管

雙簧管與巴松管就似是兩父子。雙簧管是管弦樂團裡面的真正主角-不

是嗎?每次管弦樂團音樂會開始前,他那君臨天下的A音,果真「號令

天下,莫敢不從」!以兩塊簧片同時震動產生的音色,比起長笛要來得

堅實集中。西方古典名曲當然都會見到雙簧管的足跡,可是不說不知,

雙簧管是香港流行音樂�父顧嘉煇編曲時常用的樂器,最經典的段落,

當然要數八十年代電視劇《難為正邪定分界》那幽鬱的獨奏。

巴松管是永遠的甘草演員,總是在低音聲部穩住和聲,可是在唐尼采第

歌劇《愛情靈藥》的著名男高音詠嘆調「偷灑一滴情淚」的序奏中,卻

漂亮地為男主角描劃出動情之苦。到了史達拉汶斯基手上,巴松管又變

得詭異起來,在《春之祭》中帶聽眾到遠古的俄羅斯部落。

On 5 September, Il Messaggero, Italy’s leading newspaper, published

this sad announcement: ‘Salvatore Licitra non ce l’ha fatta: il tenore

muore dopo 9 giorni di coma.’ (Salvatore Licitra did not make it: the tenor

dies after 9 days in a coma.)

Born in Switzerland to Sicilian parents, Licitra grew up in Milan. He

began to study singing at the age of 18, first at the Music Academy of

Parma and later at the vocal school established by Carlo Bergonzi in

Busseto. He made his debut as a principal artist in 1998, substituting for

the lead tenor in Verdi’s Un Ballo in Maschera at the Verona Arena on

the opening night of the season. His success led to an invitation to star

in a new production of Verdi’s La Forza del Destino at La Scala of Milan

conducted by Riccardo Muti. He soon appeared on the stages of many

great opera houses throughout Italy and in Vienna, London and Berlin.

In 2002, Licitra made his New York Metropolitan debut in Puccini’s Tosca,

substituting for Luciano Pavarotti at two hours’ notice. He was received

with standing ovations and thereafter became one of the most popular

opera singers everywhere including Japan and Taiwan. Hundreds of music

lovers heard him in recital at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts

on 25 June this year.

On 27 August 2011, while riding his motor scooter in Donnalucata in

Ragusa Province, Sicily, Licitra lost control of his vehicle and crashed

into a wall. He suffered severe head and chest injuries and remained in a

coma until pronounced dead nine days later. A beautiful voice falls silent

at its prime.

In this month’s Sunday Opera, you can hear Salvatore Licitra plays the

role as Manrico in Verdi’s Il Trovatore. For details, please refer to page 23.

Suffering from a series of health problems and severe back pain, James Levine, the Metropolitan Opera’s music director, has withdrawn from a number of productions at the Met. While resting on vacation this summer, he suffered a fall and damaged a vertebra in his back. As a result, Levine has decided to cancel all his appearances with the Met for the rest of 2011. The Met has therefore elevated its principal guest conductor, Fabio Luisi, to the title of principal conductor. He will take over most of Levine’s conducting assignments, including the new production of Mozart’s Don Giovanni and Wagner’s Siegfried, which is part of the new Robert La Page staging. Met’s General Manager Peter Gelb stressed that Levine will remain as its music director. Although he has turned down several performances over the past years, Levine still has the support of Gelb, who rejected the suggestion that Levine’s latest health setback would lead to his departure from the Met.

Hong Kong International Jazz FestivalThe 4th Hong Kong International Jazz Festival has now grown into an 8-day event, with exhibitions, workshops, concerts, by more than 40 performance groups with 300 artists from around the globe. Radio 4 brings you the performance by singer Maria João and pianist Mário Laginha from Portugal. Maria João is known for her vocal flexibility and improvisational skills. The two met in 1983 and since then they have performed and recorded extensively.

Il GardellinoFounded 23 years ago, Il Gardellino has gained an outstanding reputation in the world of historical per formance. This UK Baroque ensemble borrows its name from Vivaldi’s concerto, Il Gardellino. In this concert, they juxtapose J.S. Bach’s music with those of his contemporaries whose repertoire is often neglected, such as Alessandro Marcello and Johann Gottlieb Janitsch.

「正式錄音前請留意:黃燈亮起,代表預備;看見我示手勢後,紅燈亮起,

表示錄音正式開始。」

每一次為「樂壇新秀2011」的入圍者錄音時,我必定不厭其煩地重覆以上

說話。

十個入圍單位,合共十三位新秀,以不同樂器演奏不同曲目。每一次錄音,我

都覺得新鮮又興奮。有些新秀是第一次在專業錄音室錄音,還未踏進二號錄音

室已感到驚恐萬分,馬上要上廁所;有些在排練時還很自然,一見紅燈亮起便

突然蹦緊起來,直至完成錄音,歡呼一聲後才再現笑容。

無論如何,這群九十後的年青人,要在有限時間內灌錄三十分鐘音樂,真的不

簡單。他們的每一段錄音都不經剪接,絕對是真材實料。除了音樂演奏以外,

他們還要完成不少項目,也算是新挑戰!其中包括要面對咪高峰和攝影機,在

訪問中親身介紹自己和要演奏的曲目,以及配合錄製唱片的「奄尖」要求。他

們年輕有為,除了先天的才能,我在訪問後,發覺原來後天努力才是最重要!

要一聽他們的精彩演出,務必留意逢星期日晚上8時於第四台播放的「樂壇新

秀2011」。節目會在星期五下午2時重播。如欲一睹各新秀的廬山真面目,請

It is very exciting to be the recording producer of Young Music Makers

2011. The 13 performers, ranging in age from 13 to 20, are young

and energetic, showcase their extraordinary talent on their own

musical instruments. They all have a passion for performing music

and sharing beautiful melodies. It is definitely a challenging task for

them to record 30 minutes of music within a tight schedule, whilst the

music recorded is raw, without editing. This group of ‘post 90s’ are

busy with various activities relating to the YMM programme, such as

recording the radio programmes, being interviewed for the television,

and participating in CD recording sessions.

To watch or listen to the exciting and refreshing performances of YMM

2011, please take note of the following schedule:
