The Ygrec, or “Y” from Château d’Yquem is a curiosity – a dry white wine from what is perhaps the most famous producer of sweet wines in the world. Admittedly, it’s a bit of an upstart. The history of Yquem goes back over four and a quarter centuries while the first vintage of the “Y” was barely fifty years ago. The dry white represents about 10% of the estate’s total production annually. The blend is typically about three quarters Sauvignon Blanc to one quarter Sémillon. The Sauvignon grapes are among the earliest picked to preserve acidity, the Semillon from among the last so that a botrytis element is always present in the wine. It is unlike any other dry white Bordeaux. “Creamy and caressing overall, with brioche and macadamia nut flavors framing the core of white peach, yellow apple and green almond notes. The long, salted butter finish also features pleasant echoes of quinine and tangerine. Should unwind nicely in the cellar.” – Wine Spectator

Château Mouton Rothschild took its present name after it was acquired by Baron Nathaniel de Rothschild, from the English branch of the famous dynasty, in 1853. For many years, despite the increasingly acknowledged quality of its wine, Mouton aroused little interest among its owners, unwilling to make the journey to a then-neglected region. So it was a red-letter day when, in 1922, Baron Nathaniel’s great grandson Baron Philippe de Rothschild, barely 20 years old, took in hand the destiny of an estate to which he would devote his entire life. Baron Philippe fought to enhance the image of Mouton Rothschild and secure its elevation to First Growth status, which he finally accomplished in 1973, thus ending what he called ‘la grande injustice.’ Today Mouton Rothschild is generally regarded as being the most powerful wine of the Mèdoc, and this is reflected in both its popularity and its price.

Produced from an exceptional terroir, Le Petit Mouton de Mouton Rothschild is the second wine of Château Mouton Rothschild. Made with grapes from selected younger vines in the illustrious First Growth vineyard, it is harvested, vinified and bottled with the same scrupulous attention to detail. Harvested in small, open baskets, fermented in the Mouton oak vats, matured in oak barrels in the traditional way, all the conditions are met for the wine to express the elegance and richness of a great Pauillac. The first vintage, 1993, was called Le Second Vin de Mouton Rothschild, but it has borne its definitive name (which has a family connotation, Petit Mouton being the name of Baroness Philippine’s residence in the heart of the estate) since the following year, 1994. Le Petit Mouton offers an exuberant and intense, almost solar nose. It reveals a perfect maturity of the fruit that extends on aromas of blackberries, toast, coffee and mocha. It is a tasty wine, silky, of a remarkable softness and delicacy.

"Être sobre, c'est boire bon”, or “Being sobre is drinking well ". This is Geantet-Pansiot’s motto, written on the label. It perfectly summarises the hedonistic spirit of their wines, full, concentrated, fruity but which are delicate and fine. The domaine was founded in 1954 following the marriage of Edmond Geantet and Bernadette Pansiot. Vincent Geantet now works in tandem with his son. The domaine based in Gevrey now has 13 hectares in villages, premier crus, and in Chambertin and Charmes-Chambertin as well as its plots in Chambolle and Clos-de-Vougeot. It is a reliable and safe bet of the Côte de Nuits. Vincent's daughter, Émilie Geantet, is developing a parallel trading business.

Lot 126 Romanée-Conti Grand Cru 2001 Domaine de La Romanée-Conti, Vosne-Romanée Excellent level and appearance R 1 bottle Per lot: SGD 18000 – 23000
34
Domaine de la Romanee-Conti has one of the richest and most complex histories in all of Burgundy, with monastic origins in the 13th Century; the vines themselves having originally being cultivated by the Romans. It may be from them that the name ‘Romanee’ derives- in any case it was bestowed on the Domaine by the Croonembourg family who took ownership in 1631. The ‘Conti’ part of the name is a reflection of another of the estate’s previous owners, the Prince of Bourbon (Louis XV’s cousin, AKA La Prince de Conti) who held tenure in the 18th century. The modern era begins with Jacques-Marie Duvault-Blochet who bought the estate in 1869 (it has never been sold since) and who developed it into a state we would recognise today, purchasing vines from neighbouring Grand Crus including Richebourg and Grand Echézeaux.
35
Today DRC is managed by a Société-Civile made up of descendants of Duvault-Blochet. In 1942 a half share in the estate was sold to Henri Leroy, a negociant whose financial backing was instrumental in building the estate’s reputation and in accruing its current status as the leading producer in Burgundy. The current co-owner Aubert de Villaine took over from his father at the estate in 1953; the other, Henri-Frederic Roch took over after the 1992 expulsion of his Aunt Lalou Bize-Leroy (progenitor of the rival Domaine Leroy). “Very magnificent. Majestic density. Hint of coffee, then black peppercorns. Very rich. Lively and athletic. Great balance. Hint of mint then violets. Great freshness. Real length and transparency.” - Jancis Robinson

Appearing under many labels; Charles Thomas, Thomas-Moillard, Moillard and Moillard-Grivot, Maison Moillard is a major operation in the Côte d’Or and even further afield. An astonishing 6 million bottles lie in their cellars dispersed throughout Nuits St.Georges – and what cellars! It seems various generations of Thomas-Moillards bought property after property in Nuits, annexed the cellars and later sold the above properties – there are acres of underground storage for bottles and barrels – worth a tour without a doubt. In 2008, the company was sold to fellow Burgundian Vincent Sauvestre, who owns both the négociant Jean-Baptiste Béjot and more than 740 acres of vineyards from Chablis to Provence.

Incredibly, the Chave family have been making wine since 1481. The first purchases of land on the hill named Hermitage began in 1865, and to this day Chave’s Hermitage, both red and white, are considered the finest wines of the region, routinely garnering 100 point scores and commanding high prices. Many of the vines are old, averaging 50 years, but Chave’s mastery is the art of blending separately vinified wines from differing plots.

This is the original California cult wine and a collaboration between two of the most respected figures in wine from two continents: Baron Philippe de Rothschild (owner of Château Mouton Rothschild) and Napa Valley’s Robert Mondavi. The first vintage of Opus One was made in 1979 and released in 1984. Today the Bordeaux blend wine is as well known in Europe as it is in its native America, commanding high prices at auctions around the world.

Hochar Père et Fils Red has often been described as the ‘second’ wine of Château Musar, as it does bear some resemblance to the ‘Grand Vin’ but the comparison stops there. Four years in the making, Hochar Père et Fils Red is a blend of Cinsault, Grenache and Cabernet Sauvignon, from a single vineyard near the Bekaa Valley village of Aana, characterised by deep soils over limestone. At an average age of 30 years old, yields are low from these mature bushvines: 20-30 hl per hectare. The three varietal components are fermented in cement vats, with 6 to 9 months ageing in French oak barrels (from the forest of Nevers) before blending and bottling (unfined and unfiltered). As with the Château Musar Red, the wines are blended to reflect the character of each vintage. After several years’ maturation in bottle, the wines are released a full four years after the harvest.

American wine-legend Robert Mondavi arrived in Chile for the first time in 1991 to explore its wine country, and he found a kindred spirit in the Chilean vintner Eduardo Chadwick. They discovered their shared passion and commitment to making unique and extraordinary wines, and the seedling of a new dream took root. They would work together to create a world-class Icon- level wine like none other in Chile. The project became a reality in 1995, when they signed into agreement the first international joint venture in the history of Chilean wine, and Viña Seña was born. They embarked upon the challenging goal, with tradition, hard work and modern technology, to craft a red wine that would express the uniqueness of the Aconcagua Valley and changed the way the world thought about Chilean wine. Today, Eduardo Chadwick is the sole owner of Viña Seña, but Robert Mondavi’s pioneering spirit continues to accompany him as he fulfils the dream they shared.

Since Klaus-Peter Keller took charge of his family’s Rheinhessen winery in 2001, his rise to fame has been meteoric. His old-vine cuvée G-Max, its source a carefully guarded secret, reigns as the world’s most expensive dry Riesling, winning commensurate acclaim from critics and connoisseurs alike. ‘I’m not a wine taster, I’m a wine drinker,' Keller explains: ‘I’m interested in the mineral kick on the finish that makes you want to drink more.’ He’s fortunate that the Rheinhessen’s terroirs lend themselves to making the kind of wine he likes. ‘We have rocky, limestone soil here in the Hügelland,’ he explains, ‘so we can make great dry wines; racy wines with precision and minerality. That’s my focus.’ “Keller wines are the German Montrachets” – Jancis Robinson

This historic vineyard is considered to be a first cru in Cantenac, having 90 ha of vineyards comprised of a deep gravely soil that drains tremedously well, stresses the vines and promotes deep root growth and also provides trace minerals that add complexity to the taste of the wine. Known by the name "Gorce" until the Château was bought by the Baron of Brane in 1833, the estate encompasses the best land around the village of Cantenac. The Baron sold his other Château, "Brane-Mouton" (later to be renamed "Mouton-Rothschild") in order to devote himself entirely to Brane-Cantenac. Today the Château is owned by Henri Lurton, whose family became involved with Brane-Cantenac in 1925. “Brickish rim and orange tinted red core. Initial impression is strongly sweet red fruit but also a minty freshness. Distinctive perfume. Fine density on the palate, wth lively fruit and great energy. Fully resolved though there’s still an attractive dry grip on the finish.” – Julia Harding, MW

The origins of Château Certan de May date back to the very beginnings of Pomerol. The de May family, who settled in France from Scotland in the Middle Ages, were gifted the estate by royal decree in the 16th century as a gesture of thanks for services rendered to the crown of France. The estate began producing wine in the 18th century and was managed by descendants of the de May de Certans until 1925, when it passed to the Barreau family. Situated on Pomerol’s prized central plateau, surrounded by illustrious neighbors such as Vieux Château Certan and La Fleur-Pétrus, Château Certan de May has long been considered one of the finest estates of the appellation. The wine is rich, powerful, complex; while it can be enjoyed after a few years of cellaring, its structure and natural depth lend it great ageability.

Louis Gaspard d’Estournel inherited Cos and Pomys in 1791. Deeply convinced that the terroir of the hill of Cos was exceptional, he took many risks to enhance his estate, investing massively in the acquisition of neighbouring land. He fought endlessly to promote his estate, even if it meant having to sell it to finance his debts before acquiring it once again. Sadly, he passed away two years before the 1855 Bordeaux Classification officially recognized Cos d’Estournel as a Second Growth Estate.

Les Forts de Latour comes from three different plots from this venerable Château, located just 300 meters from the Gironde River. Some of the grapes come from the edge of the estate, others from particular Grand Vin plots and some from plots outside the estate. These vineyards have an average age of 40 years and are planted in clay soils with magnificent layers of deep gravel. This terroir has very good natural drainage and, thanks to the river, it avoids excessively high or low temperatures. Respectful agriculture is used and the harvest is carried out manually when the grapes reach optimum ripeness. In the winery, the Les Forts de Latour grapes are classified on a selection table, destemmed and gently pressed. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature. Finally, between 50 and 60% of the wine ages in new French oak barrels. Château Latour’s second wine stands out for its intense expression, which is down to most of the raw material coming from the same place as the prestigious Grand Vin made by this Médoc winery. First created in 1966, it is regarded as a great wine in its own right, certainly worthy of Classified Growth status.

This famous 39 hectare estate is regarded by most as being the best in Saint-Émilion, and has a long and complicated history. Most of the vineyards were actually purchased by the Ducasse family from Château Figeac in the 1830s. At that time, Figeac was a massive estate comprising 200 hectares! What makes Château Cheval Blanc unique is its proximity to Pomerol; in fact, their vines border those of Château L’Évangile and La Conseillante is a neighbour. Another reason is its curious composition: Cabernet Franc is actually the main grape in the assemblage, accounting for roughly 50% of planting, the rest being Merlot and a tiny bit of Cabernet Sauvignon. As such, Cheval Blanc is the greatest Cabernet Franc driven wine in the world.

This is one of Burgundy’s greatest domaines – in terms of history, vineyard holdings and quality of wine. The original Armand Rousseau was at the forefront of the first wave of domaine bottling in the 1930s. He was succeeded by his son Charles in 1959, shortly after they had bought a significant slice of the Clos St Jacques vineyard. Today Eric, grandson of Armand, is in charge of the vines and cellar, with the help of his daughter Cyrielle. The domaine produces pale, finely structured wines of great elegance and stamina. The simple principle of old (but not ancient) vines and sensible yields dictates the Rousseau style. Sometimes the wines can appear light in their youth, but they nearly always take on weight as they age.

The vineyard of Chateau d’Yquem has 113 hectares of vines, which might seem like a large production. But in fact, each vine only produces one glass of wine! The terroir is at the highest elevation in Sauternes, which gives it a unique micro climate. The micro-climate is paramount, because it allows for winds from the east to move through the vineyard, helping to remove unwanted, excessive moisture, especially later in the growing season, as the noble rot sets in. Legendary for ageing a century or more, the wines have been coveted by royalty, world leaders and connoisseurs for generations. Certain connoisseurs consider it outrageous to drink a young Yquem and believe that opening such a monumental wine before its thirtieth birthday is tantamount to a sacrilege. The 1990 vintage, awarded 98 points by Robert Parker, is clearly ready to drink now!

A member of the sixth generation of the Palacios saga, Ricardo Pérez Palacios discovered Bierzo at the end of 1990s and has remained there ever since. After training as a winemaker in France, Chile and California, and despite his contribution to the family winery Palacios Remondo in Rioja, he was eager to move onto a smaller, different project. Álvaro was already familiar with the area from the days he travelled across Spain selling oak barrels. After his experience in Priorat, he was particularly sensitive to wine regions with a monastic influence. He had also mastered winegrowing in steep slopes and was determined to work only with local grapes –it took him a long time to shift away from international varieties in Priorat. Premium wine La Faraona (production around 600 bottles) comes from a vineyard located at an altitude of over 900m. It reproduces L'Ermita model in Priorat but is less accesible given its tiny production. It shares similar traits with the rest of the wines in the range, but it is deep, elegant, distinctively expressive and has a particular feature, says Ricardo: a small tectonic plate crosses through it, which makes it rather unique and is also a magnet for storms.

Cossart Gordon & Co. was established in 1745 and is the oldest company in the Madeira Wine trade. Francis Newton, a young Scot sailed from Gravesend in Britain and arrived in Madeira on September 12th 1745, founding the company. He was joined by his younger brother Thomas from 1758 to 1763 and then by another Scot, Thomas Gordon of Balmaghie also in 1758. Thomas Murdoch joined the firm in 1791 that came to be called Newton, Gordon, Murdoch & Co. In 1808, the Scottish dominance over the firm was broken with the arrival of William Cossart, an Irishman descended from the distinguished Hugnenot family of France. The title of the firm changed in 1831 with the arrival of Cossart's nephew Peter to the island. It briefly became known as Newton, Gordon, Cossart & Co., but with the death of Newton and the resignation of the last Gordon, the firm changed its name to the now world famous branding of Cossart, Gordon & Co. Drinking old madeira is like travelling back in time. This bottle is a Solera 1822, which means that the oldest wine in the blend (using the solera system also employed in Jerez) actually dates back to 1822!

Into Neck:
Normal level for all wines. In wines over 10 years of age, this level suggests excellent provenance. Rarely used, except to emphasize a particularly good fill level when other fill levels in the same lot are less than perfect.
Base Neck: A common fill level at which many Châteaux release their wine. For wines of any age, this level suggests excellent provenance.
Top-Shoulder: Again, a common fill level at which many Châteaux release their wine. For wines of any age, this level suggests excellent provenance.
Very High Shoulder: Acceptable fill level for wines 8 or more years of age. Suggests proper storage conditions throughout its life. Natural occurrence for wines of this age.
Into Neck Base Neck Top Shoulder Very High Shoulder High Shoulder High to Mid Shoulder Mid Shoulder Low Shoulder Below Shoulder
High Shoulder: Usually not a problem for wines in excess of 20 years of age. This level may be caused by easing of the cork combined with natural evaporation. Check the clarity and the color of the wine in the bottle as a secondary indicator of provenance.
High-to-Mid-Shoulder: Refer to High Shoulder and Mid-Shoulder level descriptions.
Mid Shoulder: May suggest ullage during the life of the wine due to either easing of the cork or inconsistent storage conditions. Not abnormal for wines 30 or more years of age. As additional indicators of risk, definitely inspect clarity and color of the wine in the bottle, as well as condition of the cork.
Low Shoulder and Below: Suggests poor provenance. Definitely a risk and generally not saleable, with exception given to rare bottlings and/or labels. Not recommended for consumption.
Wines are described in this catalogue as accurately as possible. Buyers are urged to make allowances for slight variations in ullages and conditions. No guarantee is made regarding provenance, and no returns will be accepted.
