There are presently four meth-ods for taking fingerprints. Each utilizes one of the following ele-ments: (1) an ink slab and roller; (2) PRINTMATIC™ Roller; (3) Porelon®

Pads, PRINTMATIC™ Impeccable Ceramic, Thermoplastic and Flawless Pads; and (4) KlearInk™ Ceramic Pads.SIRCHIE® offers these products as

There are now four methods for recording fingerprints—with an Ink Slab and Roller; PRINTMATIC™ pre-inked roller; Porelon® Pads and PRINTMATIC™ Impeccable Ceramic, Thermoplastic and Flawless Pads; and the KlearInk™ Ce-ramic Pads. There are advantages to all of these meth-ods, and the choice between them is one based primar-ily on application.

Method AdvantagesThe Ink Slab and Roller method requires more skill than

the pre-inked roller and pad method, but the prints ob-tained tend to be cleaner and of sharper contrast. That makes them ideally suited for computer enhancement and database storage.

The pre-inked PRINTMATIC™ Roller method requires no advance preparation because it contains a built-in ink supply. The main advantage of this method is that it re-quires less skill to roll out a uniform coating of ink to obtain satisfactory prints.

The pre-inked pad method is a SIRCHIE® innovation that includes distinctively different ink pads: the Porelon® Pads, the PRINTMATIC™ Impeccable Ceramic, Thermoplas-tic and Flawless Pads as well as the KlearInk™ Ceramic Pad. The pre-inked method combines the advantages of the slab and roller method with the best qualities and usefulness of pre-inked pads.

Work Table HeightFor best results, the inking area and cardholder should

be approximately 39" (99.1cm) from the floor. This height

allows the forearm of a subject of average height to be approximately parallel to the floor, at which position it is best to roll and record fingerprints. SIRCHIE® offers sev-eral fingerprint taking stations that are either pedestal-mounted at the required height or of desktop design that, when placed on the average table top, will achieve the height required.

Preparing The Ink SlabSlab and Roller Method:

STEP 1—First, ink the roller. Apply a small amount (about a 1/4" [.6cm] stream) of fingerprint ink on the right side of the slab, toward the back. Roll a 2-3" (5.1cm-7.6cm) wide layer of ink on the back portion of the slab—lift-ing the roller off the slab after each stoke and return-ing to the starting point (do not use a back-and-forth motion with the roller). Repeat several times until a thin film of ink forms on roller.

STEP 2—Next, using the same roller motion (without roll-ing back-and-forth), spread the layer toward the front edge of the slab until a smooth, uniform coating of ink forms. The front edge is where the fingerprints are rolled. When the ink on the front edge becomes too thin, replenish the roller on the back edge of the slab and repeat STEP 2.

PRINTMATIC™ Method:Like the Slab and Roller method, the PRINTMATIC™ meth-

od requires that the operator roll ink onto an inking slab. The difference is that with the PRINTMATIC™ pre-inked roller, coating the slab requires only a few passes of the roller in the same direction to apply a thin, even layer of ink (Fig. 1).

Pre-inked Pad Method:No advance preparation is needed to use pre-inked

pads. However, the pad surface should be cleaned oc-casionally to remove oil and dirt deposits by wiping the surface lightly with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth.

Inking and Rolling The FingersNOTE: The following recommended procedure is prac-

ticed by the FBI. To avoid possible smearing, always begin the finger-

print taking procedure by inking and rolling the fingers on the right hand.

It is recommended that each finger be inked and rolled individually (i.e., ink the thumb then roll it immedi-ately, ink the forefinger, then immediately roll it, etc.). If all the fingers are first inked and then rolled, there is the chance some ink may be transferred from a finger as it is curled out of the way prior to rolling, thus causing that finger to print lightly when rolled. After the fingerprints on the right hand are recorded, ink and roll the fingers on the left hand. When that is accomplished, record the plain impressions of both hands. An examination of the fingerprint record card reveals that these steps follow the order of the space allotted for each set of impressions.

1. The subject stands to the right and rear of the operator (Fig. 2). The operator grasps the subject’s right hand with his right hand, cupping his fingers over the sub-ject’s fingers and tucking under those fingers not be-ing inked. He uses his left hand to guide the finger be-ing inked. The right thumb is inked and rolled first. The thumb is inked by rolling it from right to left, toward the subject’s body. The thumb is inked from nail to nail to a point just below the first joint. Apply ink one time only.

2. Once the thumb is inked, immediately transfer the ink to the record card in the space numbered 1 (Right Thumb). Roll the thumb from the right side to the left side (toward the subject’s body).

3. Next, ink the right forefinger by rolling the finger from left to right (away from the subject’s body, Fig. 3). Ink from nail to nail and just below the first joint. Transfer the ink to the record card by rolling from left to right in space No. 2 (Forefinger). Repeat this process for the remaining fingers by inking and rolling each finger in-dividually (Fig. 4).

4. Reposition the record card to permit adding impres-sions from the left hand. Ink the left thumb by rolling it from left to right (toward the subject’s body), and then transferring the ink to the record card, Finger No. 6 space, by rolling from left to right.

5. Ink the left forefinger by rolling it from right to left (away from the subject’s body). Transfer the ink to the record card by rolling it from right to left. Ink and roll the re-maining fingers individually.

6. Plain (Slap) impressions are taken last. Reposition the record card to permit entry to the bottom area of the record card. Ink the left thumb by pressing it straight down onto the ink pad. Transfer the ink to the Left Thumb box in the plain impression area.

7. Ink the remaining four fingers of the left hand simulta-neously by pressing them straight down onto the pad (Fig. 5). Position all four fingers at a slight angle and press them onto the plain impression area for the left hand of the record (Fig. 6). This angle is necessary to permit all four finger impressions to be recorded in the space provided.

8. Repeat this procedure for the thumb and remaining fingers of the right hand.

faces like vinyl counter tops, or install the magnetic strips to use it on a metal cabinet or magnetic sur-face. When not in use, the tight-fitting lid protects the ink pad from airborne contaminants.

Two specially formulated inks to choose from: a rich, high-contrast black stainfree ink and a clear ink. Ink pads are not replaceable due to pad construc-tion. Simply dispose of the entire case when the ink supply is depleted.

How It Works—Porelon® is a microporous plastic that acts both as an ink reservoir and an ink de-livery system. Ink is held in thousands of intercon-nected pores within the roller. Larger interior pores provide high-ink capacity and permit the use of highly pigmented inks for high-contrast impressions. Ink is gradually and evenly delivered to the surface through a particularly fine pored outer layer by capillary action.

PRE-INKED ROLLERSPRE-INKED ROLLERS

The PRINTMATIC™ Roller System combines the ad-vantages of the Porelon® pad and the ink slab and roller methods of fingerprint taking. Excellent clar-ity is obtainable with a properly executed slab and roller print, and it is as fast and easy as the Porelon®

pad method.Ink Slab and Roller Advantages —The quality of

the inked area on the slab can be seen and judged prior to inking and rolling the fingers. Second, when a proper layer of ink is applied, the rigid slab sur-face and the thin layer of ink tend to prevent the over-inking of fingers.

Ink Slab and Roller Disadvantages —It requires a relatively skilled technician to roll a thin and even layer of ink necessary to obtain exceptional finger-print impressions. If the ink layer is too thick, spotty or uneven, it’s likely to produce poor prints. In fact, excess ink is the leading cause of poor fingerprint impressions. Another disadvantage is that it may be messy—ink may spatter and cleanup may be quite a task.

These Blank Metal Tab Guide Cards are perfect for the No. MSC100 Bureau Fingerprint Card Cabi-nets. These guide cards are designed to allow de-partments to develop their own guide card system and expand as needed. Guides are constructed of durable pressboard stock. Steel tabs are firmly staked to the guide and furnished in position from first to fifth. Card strip inserts and a celluloid cover are furnished with each guide.

Recording Palm Prints

STEP 1: The subject's palm is inked using the Porelon® Palm Roller of the AP100.

About Supplemental FingerprintsSupplemental fingerprints are commonly referred to as palm prints.

Like fingerprints, palm prints can provide the investigator with a means of positive identification. Palm prints are sometimes the only form of latent print evidence found at a crime scene. And they’re particularly common in burglary cases, because the perpetrator often places his palms on window sills, casements or on the top of furniture while forc-ing entry as well as during the crime itself.

Use of Palm PrintsOften, the investigator must rely on palm prints—full or partial—for

positive identification due to insufficient latent fingerprint evidence. Palm prints are developed, photographed and lifted in the same manner as fingerprints. Like fingerprints, identification of palm prints is based on comparison of friction ridges and flexure lines. The investi-gator compares the latent palm prints and the suspect’s palm prints in the same manner as fingerprints. A latent palm print, whether full orpartial, offers a great number of minutiae points with which the investigator may compare for positive identification.

AP200 Autopalm® PrinterThe AP200 Autopalm® Printer is lightweight and portable, making

it ideal for field use. This kit provides the necessary equipment to roll and record palm prints accurately and quickly. The AP200 utilizes a Porelon® Palm Roller that applies a thin, even layer of ink along the contour of the entire palm in one simple motion. A clear impression of the palm, from fingerprints to the wrist, is then recorded on a palm print record card by rolling both over the image transfer roller. The AP200 also may be used for postmortem cases. A sturdy, molded plastic carrying case is provided with each unit.
