..Body Paragraphs Topic SentenceTopic Sentence a baby thesis statement. A sentence that expresses the main idea of the paragraph it is introducing. What idea(s) are you covering in this paragraph?

The topic sentence holds everything in place the same way a bun does!

LBody Paragraphs EvidenceFacts from the novel (quote, paraphrase, or summary) that supports your thesis. The meat of your essay.

If you are prefacing your evidence with maybe or I think, your evidence is not strong enough.

Assume the reader has read the book. Dont summarize the whole novel; just jump into the scene.

Should be a few sentences long, and you need at least two pieces of evidence per body paragraph for a strong essay.

LEmbedding QuotesWhen using quotes as a piece of evidence, you dont want to just drop them into your paper. They need to be blended.

Example One: Graff explains to Ender the philosophy of why they are doing what they do. We might both do despicable things, Ender, but if humankind survives, then we were good tools. (Dropped Quote)

Example Two: Graff tells Ender that despite the horrible crimes they commit, if humankind survives, then we were good tools. He is giving Ender a philosophy behind the actions of students in Battle School in this passage. (Blended quote)

Tips on BlendingChoose short quotes (5 words or so) to blend in with your own words, paraphrasing, summary, etc.

A quote doesnt have to be something a character says. Anything from the book is considered a quote.

Use an ellipsis to cut a quote down. Original Quote: "I think it's impossible to really understand somebody, what they want, what they believe, and not love them the way they love themselves.

Shortened and blended: Ender tells Valentine that its possible to understand somebodyand not love them the way they love themselves.

Blending Practice

Body Paragraphs AnalysisAnalysis your opinion, interpretation, insight, analysis, personal response, feelings, evaluation, explication, or reflection about the evidence in an essay.

Your analysis will echo and connect to the ideas presented in your thesis and topic sentences.

After every piece of evidence you include, you need a minimum of two sentences of analysis.

Analysis is the so what? Add something new to the conversation that wasnt there before. Analysis is NOT summary of the book.

Analysis personalizes your body paragraph. Just like burger toppings, strong analysis sets your masterpiece apart from others. Analysis makes your creation unique.

LBody Paragraphs Concluding SentenceConcluding sentence wraps up your paragraph, bringing all your ideas together into one cohesive unit.

You are easing on the brakes with a concluding sentence instead of slamming to a full stop at the end of your paragraph.

A concluding sentence could also help transition into your next paragraph.

LIshmael's perilous journey through the woods of Sierra Leone reveals the resiliency that this young man has to tackle even through lifes toughest obstacles. Throughout Ishmaels experience lost in the jungle, he must battle with his own mind; Ishmael states that even the air wanted to attack [him] and he was afraid to sleep due to the intensity of his violent dreams (Beah 49). Ishmael is pushing both his body and his soul to the breaking point, but at no point does he ever decide to just lay down and die. Ishmaels mental, as well as his physical, stamina shines through in this scene of peril, and he is able to leave the jungle a stronger man than the boy who went in. In addition to the mental torture of the jungle scene in chapter 8, Ishmael is also viciously chased by a herd of wild boars with forked teeth extending out of [their] mouth[s] (Beah 53). Ishmaels resilient spirit, however, can outlast even the toughest of competitors, and he is able to escape the boar attack unharmed. Ishmael could have chosen many times to just give in. Life seems almost impossible for this young man at times, and one test after another seems to always be nipping at his heels. Time after time, though, Ishmael demonstrates his mental strength by rolling with each punch and coming back stronger. This willingness to keep fighting no matter the odds really connects to one of the overall themes of the memoir: man will do whatever it takes to survive.
