FIN-X ’07 Delivers Quality Exhibits, Conference Prog

Judging by exhibitor and attendee evaluations, the fi rst FIN-X Conference & Expo for Indus-trial Finishers, held September 17 – 20 in Indianapolis, delivered high quality exhibits, an outstanding conference program and attendees who were seriously looking to improve their

fi nishing operations and technologies. New and innovative features were launched at FIN-X ’07, and were very popular. The Dem-onstration Lab on the expo fl oor included a batch powder coating booth and IR oven where attend-ees could go from conference sessions to the show fl oor for hands-on training. Additionally, the lab featured the VirtualPaintTM training system for simulation of liquid fi nishing. Here attendees could test their spraying skills and measure milage and transfer effi ciency on a variety of different shaped parts. The demo lab was busy all week long. “I was delighted with the Demo Lab area,” commented FIN-X Programming & CCAI Technical Director Rodger Talbert. “This was a new experience for us and everyone appreciated the opportunity for non-commercial training on the show fl oor. It was great and we already have ideas to make it even better in the future.” A keynote address from author Mike Collins on “Saving American Manufacturing”

With the Custom Coaters Showcase in the background, CCAI members relax in the booth during the reception.

CCAI’s booth served as both as an information center for CCAI and the home of the Custom Coater’s Showcase.

provided insights into a wide variety of American manufactur-ers and methods for keeping their companies competitive and prosperous that any company can implement. He shares his thoughts throughout his 342-page book, available for purchase on the FIN-X website: www.fi n-xshow.com. You can also pur-chase a copy of the FIN-X Conference Proceedings CD on the FIN-X website as well. The CD contains more than 50 presen-tations from the FIN-X ’07 Technical Conference. Many felt that FIN-X was a much more diverse show than past fi nishing events. “This was truly a diverse exhibitor show fl oor,” noted Bruce Bryan of Wagner Industrial Solutions and the Northern Illinois Chapter. “There was a much wider variety of fi nishing technologies represented and it was great to see new technologies from industry segments such as robotic suppliers. Every attendee had the opportunity to visit with suppliers from multiple fi nishing technologies.” Bob Warren from the West Michigan Chapter, managed the CCAI booth on the expo fl oor along with assistance from Na-tional and Chapter board members. “The new CCAI booth at FIN-X-07 increased the interest in “What is CCAI”, Bob War-ren noted. “We had three or four times the number of inquires than in past shows. We should realize new individual, custom coater and corporate membership from the show. CCAI’s manu-als continue to be perceived as valuable to the industry. It was

great to discuss the value of CCAI with those who stopped at the new booth.” CCAI thanks everyone who took time to share booth duty during the show. Attendees came from 42 U.S. states plus Washington, DC; 4 Canadian provinces and 12 foreign countries. Registered at-tendees plus exhibit personnel combined for a fi nal registra-tion count of 2,320. CCAI National Board Member and Texas Chapter President, Jeff Watson of R3 Water Technologies Div. of Pneu-Mech Systems noted “it is critical these days to be able to see, touch, learn about, and compare multiple technologies and longer sections of the supply chain. That is why FIN-X was valuable to me. Not only did I make some very nice sales con-tacts and meet new vendors on the fl oor, but I achieved the main benefi t of any trade show and that’s to get a feel for the future of my industry. Exhibiting and attending trade shows aren’t inex-pensive, but forward looking people who can see a larger picture will readily see the value.” Attendees agreed with Jeff Watson. Of the attendees re-turning evaluations, 87% said it was worth their time to attend FIN-X ’07 and 94% said they obtained useful information on the show fl oor. “I had a great time in a wonderful city and can't wait to see what next year will bring,” commented an attendee. “I learn something new each year and always bring something of value back to my company.”

Another highlight of FIN-X ’07 was the plant tour to Scha-fer Powder Coating at the close of the expo. Attendees saw a new state-of-the art powder coating system and were able to ask many questions of owner Mark Schafer and Midwest Finishing Systems who installed the equipment. Javier Lujan Williams, an attendee from PMS Argentina s.a. writes “The plant tour was GREAT!! The explanation of the process and the plant itself was really great. It was nice to be able to see a brand new plant. Congratulations.” CCAI held an appreciation breakfast on Wednesday morn-ing to thank our Corporate members for their support of the as-sociation. Products Finishing was honored during the breakfast with a CCAI Member Appreciation Award for their long-time support of CCAI’s Annual Meeting. Finally, Anne Goyer, Conference and Expo Manager is very proud to announce that the FIN-X ’07 Monday Night Football Party generated $3,500 that will be split between our two chari-ties: The V Foundation for Cancer Research and the New Or-leans Mathematics and Science High School. “It was a fun eve-ning of food, drinks, raffl e prizes and football, but the best thing is that we raised money for two very worthy charities. We plan to continue these efforts at future shows.” Details on FIN-X ’09 will be announced in the near future. FIN-X ’07 was sponsored by fi ve of the leading industry

trade associations: The Chemical Coaters Association, The Electrocoat Association, The Society of Manufacturing Engi-neers, The Porcelain Enamel Institute and the Infrared Div. of the Industrial Heating Equipment Association, along with Prod-ucts Finishing magazine.

Rich Saddler of Herman Miller shared his experience with fi nishing and purchasing at Herman Miller.

The pretreatment general session drew a large crowd during the FIN-X ’07 conference.

tact with the soiled surface for a much longer time and continue to work on stubborn soils. As the slow-moving product fl ows along the surface it continually brings fresh chemical to bear on the surface.

PARKER IONICS PULSE POWER II POWDER GUNThe new Pulse Powder II uses one gun setting that provides higher charging effi ciency while limiting free ions. The result is better coverage on all types of surfaces including recoats, Faraday areas and fl at surfaces with reduced orange peel and back-ionization.

WAGNER C4 HI-COAT POWDER GUNThe new C4 Hi-coat powder gun uses a new pump design to reduce the total volume of air required. Working in combination with a smaller diameter, grounded hose, the new pump provides a higher volume of powder with less velocity. This combination provides a signifi cant improvement in standard deviation and coverage on a variety of part geometries.

MOTOMAN PX-SERIES PAINTING ROBOTSMotoman had a working example of their painting robotic arms in the booth. The PX-series stretches robotic application by providing application specifi c robots suitable for large and small applications. In combination with their MotoSim EG simulation system they have taken robotic application to a new level that is suitable for liquid and powder applications.

HENKEL NEW GENERATION COATING PROCESSSThe New Generation Coating process (NGC) is a new approach to pre-treatment that provides a conversion coating on steel, galvanized steel and aluminum that meets the following goals. It is shorter and sim-pler than the current phosphate processes and it signifi cantly reduces the environmental impact of phosphate processes while providing corrosion performance that meets typical metal fi nishing specifi ca-tions. The NGC process is based on non-regulated zirconium chemicals compared to tri-cationic zinc phosphate that contains four regulated chemicals: Zn, Ni, Mn and phosphate. The NGC process offers an op-portunity for a shortened process footprint and reduced water usage because of the reduced number of stages required compared to zinc phosphate. All testing to date indicates that the New Generation Coat-ings provide corrosion performance that is within the metal fi nishing industry specifi cations and very comparable to the zinc phosphate coatings that have been in use for a century.

PPG INDUSTRIES ELECTROCLEAR® & ELECTROCOLOR® PPG has commercialized ELECTROCLEAR® 2700, an electrodeposited clear resin for use in decorative markets such as door hardware, automotive trim, and extrusions. The clear coating can be tinted with PPG’s new complimentary tint line to produce transparent color coatings called ELECTROCOLOR®. The ELECTROCOLOR® Gemstone Color Collection consists of eight tints made with a proprietary grinding process that produces a “dye-like” appearance but delivers the long-lasting UV durability of a conventional pigment. The intense color strength of the tints allows for minimal tint usage to obtain strong color development while allowing the e-coat bath run like a clear providing signifi cant operational advantages.

CHEMETALL OAKITE OXISILANEChemetall Oaktite also introduced a new treatment product that saves energy and reduces some of the secondary costs associated with pretreatment. Their silane-based products are nono-scale technology that provides excellent results without heat. Oxisilane does not produce sludge like traditional phosphates so disposal costs are reduced. The silane molecule is a silicon atom combined with an organic molecule. More complex silanes described as “organo-functional” are used for the Oxilane product. In order to further enhance performance, non-regulated group IV-B metals are used to selectively and preferentially bond to the metal sub-strate, providing improved corrosion-resistance performance compared to a silane-only process.

DUBOIS DUJEL 200 CLEANERBatch coaters often fi nd themselves left out of the research and development loop. New technologies are made for high volume users and they are stuck with the same old tricks. Dujel 200 is targeted for hand wand application. Dujels are applied in a gel form to provide extended dwell time and superior cleaning compared to conventional liq-uid and foam products. They are capable of removing oil and grease, white rust, red rust, hard water/carbonate scale, laser scale and mill scale. The gel allows the material to stay in con-

Chapter Events RecapTwin Cities Kicks Off Programming with Meeting

on Energy On September 27th, the Twin City Chapter began the year’s programming with a dinner meeting presentation covering the energy challenges that face OEMs and custom coaters with electrical and gas utility usage. A two-man team from Utility Partners gave the presentation covering such topics as the billing components that utility companies use. In addition to the cost factors the group in attendance learned what utility based cost savings technologies are available. A unique part of the program was the selection of real examples of energy saving specifi cs that have been used by local companies.

Lively discussions were a part of the Twin Cities meeting on
