,,... Viel zu oÍt wird die Tatsache übersehen, da8 mitden Pauken wie mit jedem anderen lnstrument musi-ziert werden kann; es werden Tóne, es werden Klànge,es werden Rhythmen erzeugt. Pauken verlangen eineeigene Spieltechnik. . . Obwohl natürlich die verschie-densten Artikulationen auÍ den Pauken zu realisierensind, ist es ihre primãre Eigenart, voll und resonantzu schwingen und zu klingen . . ."

Diese und alle anderen spiéltechnischen Problemewerden ausführlich im Unterrichtswerk ,,Studien fürPauken" (Ê.8 2827 - 2829) besprochen.

Die Schlãgelwahl bei den vorliegenden Soli wird demlnterpreten überlassen, da hier einige nicht abwãgbareUmstânde zu berücksichtigen sind wie z.B.: GrôBeder lnstrumente und Material der Felle, die Raum-akustiK die lnterpretationsvorstellung und die sehrindividuelle Anschlagstechni k.

ln ,,Rockin' Timpani" allerdings wird das Anschlags-material empfohlen, um dem speziellen Charakterdieser ,,pop-áhnlichen" Studie gerecht zu werden:

Directions for Playing"..-All too Írequently the scope for musical interpre-tation employing the timpani tends to be overlooked.As in the case of all other musical instruments, toneand rhythm feature just as predominanüy in playingthe timpani. Nevertheless, the techniques involved iãtimpani playing call for special consideration. . . Whileit is possible to realize a whole variety of diÍÍerentphrasing techniques using the timpani, the main char-acteristic distinguishing these instruments is the Íull,round tone and resonance they are capable of pro-ducing . . ."Such aspects as these, along with other points per-taining to technique are discussed in detail in theeducational publications "studies for ïimpani,'(EE 2827-282s).Owing to there being certain incalculable circum-stances, such as the size of instruments and materialused in the drum-heads as well as surroundingacoustics, personal ideas of interpretation and thealtogether pronounced individual aspect of touch, thechoice of sticks in performing this solo material isleft to the player's own discretion.ln rendering "Rockin'Timpani", however, the speciÍieddevices are recommended to be applied in order todo proper justice to the special character oÍ this"pop-like" study:
