Not every day is going to perfect

Not every other student or teacher is going to be exactly the way we might want them to be

Not everyone will be as nice to you as you might want them to be

You are going to be asked to do things that are hard, and you will be expected to have a go at those things you

may not like doing

There will be some things that you will not succeed at

People are going to say ‘No’ to you at times, and you will not always be able to do what you want to do

You will be expected to comply with some things that you may not agree with

Some things will be, in your mind unfair, and unreasonable

All of the above is the real world. Learning to live the above is a critical part of moving into adulthood, and it is vital that

during high school years we are all working very hard at educating our young people in how to deal with difficult

situations and challenging people and events. Running away, hiding, having tantrums, being abusive, apportioning

blame, making excuses, are all ways of dealing with challenges but they rarely, if ever, bring about a positive result.

From the Principal

It is great to see the school in full swing. I have been particularly

impressed with the way our Year Seven students have settled into

high school – it is a great credit to them and their Year Advisor,

Loren Heath. It has also been great to see so few students absent

from school so far this year. I cannot stress enough the

importance of every student being at school each and every day

unless they are sick. Without that continuity of being in class

everyday it is very hard to have continuity in learning.

Big Challenge For Many Students In 2014 – Building Their

Resilience

This may sound like an odd topic but I want to draw this to the

attention of all parents and students. Life at high school is many

things – learning of course is paramount. But learning is not just

the in class academic learning, it also learning how to learn, and

finally it is about learning to move from childhood to adulthood.

The latter can be very challenging. But here are a few things every

student needs to get their head around and come to terms with –


Some things in life are hard and are not fair. All of us have to learn with deal with this, and accept this and find sensible,

considered ways of resolving things. Please remember my job, and the job of my staff, and the job of parents and

caregivers, is to help young people along this difficult but critical path.

Hats

Our school student leadership group have been looking into a range of different things to try and improve our school.

One of those has been their desire to have a school hat for students. We all know that Australia has the highest rate of

skin cancer in the world and anything that we can do to combat this we must support. The group has come up with

three options for students- a bucket hat, a trucker’s cap and a normal peak cap – all with the Finley High School logo on

it. An order has been placed this week and we hope they will be available within a month. They can be purchased at the

school and at this stage we think the price will be around $15. As soon as we have some samples available we will

publish them in the school newsletter and at the school.

Year Seven Excursion

It was great to hear that the Year Seven Camp to Howman’s Gap last week was such a great success. Although most

returned in need of a good sleep obviously it was a lot of fun and we are most hopeful that all of our students got to

know a lot of other students a lot better and were able to make many new friends. A very special thank you to all the

staff who attended and especially to Loren Heath for the hard work she put in to make the camp so successful.


Swimming Carnival

A special thank you also to all of the students who participated so enthusiastically at the twilight carnival last week. It

was a great day for swimming, not being too hot and as always a lot of our students were enthusiastic all day and as a

result we had a great carnival. Congratulations to not only those who did exceptionally well individually but to all those

who really had a go. A very special thanks to Michael Tooke for all his hard work in pulling the carnival together. Also to

all the other staff and community members who supported and contributed on the day.

M.A.D.D. (Music, Art, Dance, Drama and a whole lot more)

Later this term we will be holding our first M.A.D.D. night. We are well aware that we have many, many students who

love creative and performing arts and this is an area of the school we really want to see develop. We have a very

enthusiastic team on the staff who have been working on this for some months and over the last week it has been great

to see so many students involved in meetings and rehearsals for the event. If you are a student and you have not

registered your interest yet it is not too late – just let Miss Ziva or Jodi Brown know you are keen.

We are hopeful that this will be a real success and that this can be something that we will be able to do on a regular

basis. Watch this space for more info in the coming weeks.

Winter Jumpers and Uniform

It is great to see so many of our students presenting themselves so well each and every day. We want to encourage all

students to take great pride in themselves and to be an integral part of Finley High School. Shortly we will have available

a photo display of our uniform so that it is really clear to everyone the way that we want our students to appear.

Just a reminder that uniforms can be purchased at several different outlets in Finley and if you need any additional

information please do not hesitate to contact the school.

It seems winter is a long way away but soon students will be looking for a jumper to wear as it cools down. It is

important if students want a winter woollen jumper that they contact the local outlets and place an order if they are not

readily available.

Berrigan Shire Careers and Employment EXPO

On Wednesday 9th April, Finley High School, in conjunction with the Berrigan Shire Council, will be hosting the Annual Berrigan Shire Employment and Careers Expo for all students in Years Ten, Eleven and Twelve.

The purpose of the day is to encourage and stimulate young people living in our local area to consider training, living,

earning and investing in our local area. It also serves to provide a positive link between young people and local


employers. Students will get the opportunity to interact and engage both formally and informally with people who have

a regional working or business career.

The program for the day will involve both small group and large group sessions, where students will move between

presenters. Topics covered will include things like local success stories, understanding finance for work, study and

leaving home, etiquette, job interview skills and employer expectations.

Students will be provided with lunch at the RS Club, during which time they will also have the opportunity to interact and

speak with the presenters and other local business people. Lunch time will also involve student participation in some fun

trivia based activities.

Students will be required to dress appropriately for the day under the theme of “Dressing To Impress at Interview”.

This should see all students attend the day in clothing that represents how they would dress to be successful in a formal

interview situation.

In conjunction with the day, a competition will be run for any students who wish to create a multimedia presentation of

their choice, that represents their vision or impression of living, learning and earning in the local shire. Last year’s

winning presentation received a prize as well as being shown at the Berrigan Business Awards.

We encourage you to discuss this day with your child and ensure that they attend and engage in the activities provided. Year Ten Work Experience

Year Ten students are currently preparing for their first round of Work Experience. Although the placements do not take

place until next term, students are required to be organising their placements now. Placements can only happen if all

insurance paperwork is completed and signed off and this can take some time in certain cases. Students were required

to have returned their blue cards with their placement details by week three this term. If your child is having difficulty

with finding a placement please contact the Careers Staff.

Year Twelve Tertiary Tour

Expressions of Interest for the Year Twelve Melbourne Tertiary Tour have recently gone home in order to finalise

numbers. This is a great opportunity for our Senior students to participate in a tour of several different universities

around Melbourne. Students get to visit and tour various campuses and speak with ambassadors about the University

and what it has to offer. The trip also coincides with The Age Careers Expo where students have the opportunity to

partake in various lectures and also to speak with a host of other tertiary and employment providers. Should you have

any questions about this trip please contact the Careers Staff.

NSW School Vaccination Program

Each year NSW Health offers the vaccines recommended by the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC)

for adolescents as part of the school vaccination program.

In 2014 the following vaccines will be offered:

Year Seven Students:

dTpa vaccine (Diphtheria, Tetanus and Pertussis (whooping cough)) as a single dose.

Varicella vaccine (chicken pox) as a single dose; and


Human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine in a 3-dose schedule at 0,2 and 6 month intervals for male and female

students (students who commence HPV vaccination in Year Seven but do not complete the course may be

offered catch-up doses at school in Year Eight).

Year Nine Students:

HPV vaccine in a 3-dose schedule at 0, 2 and 6 month intervals for male students only (catch-up vaccination)

* The parent information kits contain a consent form, information sheet and privacy statement that details how personal

information will be collected, stored and utilized.

Parent Information Kits will be sent home to parents/guardians. To consent to the vaccination of their child,

parents/guardians are advised to:

Read all the information provided

Complete the consent form by ticking the vaccines they would like their child to receive

Return to their child’s school

Ensure that their child eats breakfast on the day of the school vaccination clinic.

Parents/guardians who wish to withdraw their consent for any reason may do so by writing to the school principal or by

phoning the school. The Procedure for Withdrawal of Consent is available on the NSW Health website at

www.health.nsw.gov.au/immunisation

To improve vaccination completion, students will be opportunistically offered any missed doses throughout the year

where possible.

Please note that for HPV vaccine only, parents/guardians must record their Medicare Number (all 10 digits and the 11th

number beside the child’s name) on the consent form, as this is required to record the students information on the

National HPV Vaccination Register and (for female students only) link to the National or State Cervical Screening

Program.

A Record of Vaccination will be provided to each student vaccinated at the clinic. Parents/guardians should ensure

that this record is kept for future reference and should not assume that their child has been vaccinated if they do not

receive this Record of Vaccination.

Community Announcements

Interactive Workshop for Parents – “Siblings of Children with Disabilities”

Presented by Kate Strohm, Director, Siblings Australia Inc. Held on Tuesday 1st April from 7pm to 9pm at the Tocumwal

Golf Club, Barooga Road. Cost is $10 per person (supper provided).

The workshop will assist parents to:

Understand the concerns of siblings

Identify behaviours that might indicate stress

Explore factors affecting the adjustment of siblings

Identify parent role in supporting siblings

Identify other sources of support for siblings

Meeting other parents with similar experiences.

Drug Information Session

The Finley Football Netball Club and the Finley RSC invite you to attend a Drug Information Session presented by Jim

O’Brien on behalf of AFL Victoria Country, former member of the Victoria Police.

This Drug Information Session will be held tonight, Thursday 20th February 2014, commencing at 7pm at the Finley RSC

Auditorium. You must be 16 years and over to attend.

Enrolments at South West Music Regional Conservatorium

South West Music wishes the students at Finley High who have enrolled with us, all the very best for their guitar, piano

and flute lessons this term. The individual lessons will be delivered by Chris Bodey (guitar) on Tuesdays and Delena

Gaffney (piano & flute) on Fridays.

Chris has places remaining on his timetable and he is able to teach both adults and children guitar, ukulele, double bass,

mandolin and banjo.

Delena’s timetable is currently full but please contact SWM if you would like to be placed on a waiting list.

If you would prefer to come to our studios in Deniliquin after school, then you can choose from guitar, ukulele, double

bass, mandolin, cello, vocals, drum kit, brass, flute, piano, keyboard, violin (via video conference) AND the Young

Musicians Club.
