I remember turning 10 and thinking, wow, Im a WHOLE DECADE old!!!

A lot of things can happen in 10 years. So for your birthday, I had the idea of putting

together a history book of sorts to chronicle some of the events that have happenedeach year in your lifetime so far.

Its a random collection of things that occurred throughout the last ten years that Ithought might interest you (and some of which interest me -- especially the space andtechnology stuff because when I was your age, I loved computers and thought a lotabout being an astronaut!). I tried to include big things that happened, and Im sure Ileft out some important stuff, but hopefully youll enjoy it and maybe even learn

something new!

A building called Taipei 101 was built in Taiwan,making it the tallest skyscraper in the world. Itstands at 1,670 feet tall.

(In 2010, an even taller building called Burj Khalifawas built in Dubai. It stands at 2,717 feet tall.Wow!)

Do you ever watch the television showJeopardy!?I watched it a lot when I was a kid, and sometimesI cant believe its still on. The host, Alex Trebek,has been hosting it since 1984 (for 29 years!). In2004, a contestant named Ken Jennings broke arecord for winning $2.5 million in over 74 gameswon on the show. Whoa.

And that year, the Statue of Liberty was reopened,after being closed for a few years. You can climbto the top again.

In 2005, Xbox 360 was released, changing theway people played video games by allowing formore interactivity.

In August, megahurricane Katrina devastated thesoutheastern region of the United States, and leftNew Orleans, Louisiana, struggling to recover in

the wake of its destructive floods and high winds.

In December of that year, the Metropolitan TransitAuthority, or MTA, went out on strike. They shutdown all of New York City for three days, sendingthe message to the city government that theywouldnt stand for low wages and bad workingconditions. I was teaching 5th grade at the time,and couldnt get to work because I lived so faraway from where I taught. But I remember beingproud of the transit workers for standing up fortheir rights.

Also that year, Disneyland turned 50!!

In the summer of 2006, one of the worst heatwaves in history hit the western United States,and record temperatures of 115 degrees wererecorded in California.

Also that year, Google merged with YouTube.

iTunes recorded its 1 billionth download.

.and the Nintendo Wii was released, takingvideo game playing to a whole other level.

In 2007, Apple released the iPhone, which wouldchange the meaning of the word phone forever.There have been six different generations ofiPhones since it was initially released to thepublic.

In the same year, one of my favorite animatedfilms, Ratatouille, was made by Pixar and showedin theaters everywhere.

J.K. Rowling also released the final book of theHarry Potter series: Harry Potter and the DeathlyHallows. The first book in the series was publishedten years before, in 1997.

Barak Obama was the first African-American to beelected President of the United States of America.It was a momentous event.

The artist Shepard Faireys rendition of Obama

(pictured at far left) quickly become well knownthroughout the world.

Also that year, the space shuttle Endeavourspent

a record 16 days on the International SpaceStation in outer space. The mission was calledSTS-123, and it was the Endeavours 25th flightinto space.

People everywhere mourned the loss of MichaelJackson on June 25, 2009. He was one of thegreatest musicians and pop stars of all time.

In the same month, the Lunar ReconnaissanceOrbiterwas launched to investigate the existenceof water and ice on the moon. Photographsconfirming the presence of water were releasedlater that year.

On July 22, the longest solar eclipse of the 21stcentury occurred. It lasted 6 minutes and 39seconds.

2010 was a big year for technology. Androidstarted outselling Apples iPhone after a newversion of the iPhone made consumersexperience problems with the antenna.

Justin Bieber, who was discovered on YouTube in2008, became a huge global sensation.

And Apple changed touchscreen technology onceagain by introducing the iPad. (In 2012, Appleintroduced the iPad Mini).

Upset with the state of unemployment, low pay,inconsistent healthcare coverage, and unequaleducation, citizens throughout the country starteda movement called Occupy Wall Street. Peoplegathered on Wall Street in New York City, a streetknown for its wealth and power when it comes tomaking decisions that have to do with money. Ispent every Sunday during the fall going down to

Wall Street to knit hats and scarves for peoplewho were supporting the movement when theweather started to get chilly. (I got interviewed forTime Out New York, too, which was pretty cool!)

Earlier that year, the space shuttle Discoveryflewits last voyage. The Discoveryflew more missions

than any other space shuttle, and touched downits wheels for the last time in March 2011.

And wikipedia.org, the most comprehensive free,online encyclopedia, turned 10 years old.

In 2012, you were the recipient of the first-ever,kid-sized Brooker Hollow sweater for your 9thbirthday! Since then, Ive experimented with otherpatterns. Let me know if you want to design onetogether someday! I hear youre a pretty amazingartist!!

Also of note in 2012, Felix Baumgartner set theworld record for skydiving. More than 8 millionpeople watched as the Australian athlete spent

four minutes free falling from space. He jumpedfrom a height of 24 miles above the surface of theearth, and reached an estimated speed of 843.6miles per hour.
