“A work fit to live for, a self fit to live with, and a faith fit to live by.” The Reverend Canon Nelson Pinder offered these wise words to underscore his message to the Class of 2006 at Baccalaureate on Friday evening. Seniors Audrey Coyne and Hope Decker sang “Tutti I Fior” from Madame Butterfly by Giacomo Puccini beautifully during the service.

A sunny Saturday morning greeted seniors, faculty, trustees, family, and friends as they gathered at the Education Center to celebrate a very special Graduation Day. Members of the Class of 2006 processed in with the faculty and trustees to the familiar

strains of “Pomp and Circumstance” performed by the Trinity Preparatory School Brass Ensemble. After a welcome by Headmaster Maughan, Martha Ellis presented the H. Benton Ellis Award for Excellence in Teaching. Outstanding faculty member Janine Papin was the recipient this year.

Friendships, diversity, academic challenges, growing up together, and making a difference were themes co-salutatorians and co-valedictorians Danny Mayer, Michael van den Berg, Keith Fernandez, and Sanjey Sivanesan spoke of in their addresses. WESH 2 anchor Wendy Chioji, in her commencement address, alternately encouraged and entertained with advice and anecdotes of her own struggles and successes.

Various members of the senior class offered their talents during the ceremony. Sadie Stafford sang “Leave No Song Unsung” by Linda Spevacek-Avery and Katherine Perez led those assembled in the alma mater, both accompanied by fellow classmate and pianist James

Francis. Graduation concluded with the

traditional passing of the diplomas around senior rock. As we say goodbye to the Class of 2006, we, like Canon Pinder, believe that our graduates demonstrate a solid sense of work, self, and faith on which to build their futures. To the Class of 2006—we wish you all the best!

Chase Beach, baseball, College of Wooster“With all team sports you learn camaraderie, and this is especially true at Trinity. Without sports I wouldn’t have talked or knew more than half the people at Trinity that I know now. I’d be lost in the crowd. It helped me build character, leadership, and social skills which are all pertinent to success in the outside world.”

Samantha Burmeister, softball, Elmhurst College“Through my softball experience and my relationship with Coach Finnucan, I have learned the valuable concepts of always giving 100%, never giving up, and learning how to handle difficult times in order to improve my game. These values will no doubt be of immeasurable importance in my future softball participation at Elmhurst College.”

Brooke Bushika, softball, University of Georgia“Trinity athletics have allowed me to develop as both an athlete and an individual. Managing my time around practice/game schedules while simultaneously attempting to keep up with Trinity’s challenging academics was extremely difficult but will certainly give me an edge in the future. I have come to love and respect the Trinity coaches and players, and I thank them for countless, unforgettable memories and experiences that I will take with me when I leave.”

Keith Fernandez, soccer, Harvard University“Trinity Prep athletics has taught me that discipline and hard work can truly make a difference on the soccer field and in life. The lessons that I have learned while playing soccer will not only make me a better player, but also a better person in general.”

Valerio Ferroni, soccer, North Carolina State“Trinity’s outstanding coaches, facilities, and athletic department have given me the opportunity to develop and grow as an athlete and a person.”

Shannon Griffin, softball, UCF“Throughout my Trinity athletic career I have been taught many valuable lessons. Whether it was about responsibility or competitiveness, it has helped me mature into the person I am today.”

Rachel Jakubowski, soccer, University of South FL“Trinity prep athletics helped me to develop as a player. It was a great experience because it was competitive and enjoyable at the same time. Playing soccer at Trinity also allowed me to meet new friends and become more sociable. All the girls were goofy and nice, so it was great getting to spend time with them.”

Danny Mayer, golf, Harvard University“Sports, especially golf, are a way to escape from the rigors of academics and life. They teach time management, honesty, team work, and modesty.”

James Moye, tennis, Vanderbilt University“Trinity Athletics has given me a chance to develop leadership in a sport that is mostly individual. I learned to deal with many things like working with people of all ages and talent levels.”

Dean Reinke, baseball, Rollins College“If I could take one thing from the Trinity athletic experience it would be the work ethic that each coach instilled in me. “

Sam Saunders, golf, Clemson University“Sports at Trinity has taught me to be part of a team as well as how to be in a leadership position… you learn to gain the respect and trust of those you play with.”

Thomas Williams, football, Furman University“Trinity has taught me a lot about teamwork and friendship through winning and losing and working hard together.”
