Most days, 20-30 of us stand out in the heat, rain or humidity nearly 30 minutes to monitor and assist with arrival or dismissal so we truly appreciate your help. She won four Leap Pad learning systems and two Leap Pad tablets. Three of the learning systems were donated to kindergarten and a drawing was held to award the remaining items to some lucky SJE students. Fire Prevention Week Fire Prevention Week is October 9-13. During this week we remind students about important fire safety precautions. Teachers will conduct classroom lessons on fire safety and we will invite the Deer Park Volunteer Fire Department here on Wednesday to present a special assembly for our SJE Stars. Please join our efforts and make this a priority at your home! Fire Prevention Week is a great time to discuss your own family’s fire safety measures, including practicing a family evacuation plan and checking to see if you need new batteries for the smoke detectors in your home.

Congratulations to these SJE STARS! One of our PTO board members was recently announced as winner of a contest she entered to benefit some lucky SJE stu-dents. She won four Leap Pad learning systems and two Leap Pad tablets. Three of the learning systems were donated to kindergarten and a drawing was held to award the remaining items to some lucky SJE students. The names of the winners will be announced on the STAR Morning News and pictures will be posted to the PTO website. Thanks PTO!

What is a PLC? Parents may have recently heard children talking about “PLCs” and wondered, “What is that?” This acronym stands for “Professional Learning Community”, and we are excited to announce that SJE has implemented them in grades 2, 3, 4 and 5.

A professional learning community is a group of educators working together to help each child be more successful. We focus on four essential questions:

1. What do we want students to learn? 2. How will we know if they’ve learned it? 3. What will we do if they haven’t? 4. What will we do if they have?

Teachers work in their PLC teams to develop assessments, study student data, group students by needs, and then prepare specialized lessons targeted to those needs. Here are two of the new things you might hear your child mention:

PLC Collaboration Day: Every Wednesday is “Collaboration Day”. Students receive a rotation of lessons so that teachers can have more time to do all of this new work. The rotation includes PE and music, but also incorporates additional time in health, guidance, art, computers and library. The children are loving this chance to have more time learning in these areas.

PLC Intervention Time: We have “PLC Intervention Time” on

the other four days. This is time set aside for targeted lessons based on the students’ needs. Students still having difficulty with the concept get extra time and instruction, while those who have learned the concept are provided extension lessons that are more challenging.

We are proud to take this important step that we believe will improve the education for every child at SJE. As always, feel free to contact your child’s teacher or an administrator with any questions. You can also visit www.allthingsplc.info/ to learn more.
