What type of first aid kit is right for you?

The actual contents of your kit should reflect the type of injuries most likely to occur in your place of work. The HSE sets out a minimum level of provision, but if the first aid kit is for the canteen for example, it should probably contain more burn dressings and blue plasters. Likewise, a kit destined for use on a production line would usually need more eye pads and dressings.

Do you need eye wash?

The HSE regulations require you to have at least 1 litre of sterile water in sealed, disposable containers for eye irrigation, if mains tap water is not readily available. But even if you have mains water close by, it can be tricky to wash out someone’s eye using water from a tap. Eye wash pods are easy to use for minor irritants and eye wash bottles make it much easier to flush the eye clear in more severe cases.

How much first aid do you need?

The size and quantity of kits you need depends on how hazardous an environment you work in and the number of people who work there. For example, injuries in an office are generally less frequent and severe than those on a construction site.

This chart provides guidance for employers but does not replace your requirement to carry out a risk assessment:

Are the kits you already have still fit for purpose?

Are the contents out of date? Most first aid products have an expiry date printed on the packaging. To stay compliant you need to regularly check and replace any out of date items.

Is the kit fully stocked? Over time, the contents of your first aid kits will be used at different rates. Plasters will be used more often than say triangular bandages. Your own risk assessment will tell you the minimum content for each kit, so to stay compliant you should check and refill stock levels on a regular basis.

• More gloves (Nitrile) in accordance with the NHS and St. Johns Ambulance guidelines • More appropriate quantity of plasters • More wipes (sterile) • Fewer medium and large dressings • Fewer triangular bandages (less need for immobilizing limbs) • Adhesive tape as well as safety pins • New smaller finger dressing (more suitable for small injuries) • New burns gel dressing with conforming bandage to secure it • New foil emergency blanket to keep a casualty warm and reduce the effects of shock • New mouth to mouth resuscitation device to protect first aiders from infection • New first aid guidance leaflet with the latest HSE guidelines

What's the most hygienic way to dry your hands?A University of Westminster study into the effect on bacteria on the hands after washing and drying found:

1. Paper Towels - bacteria reduced on average by up to 76% on the fingers and by up to 77% on the palms.

2. Jet Air Dryers - bacteria increased on average by 42% on the fingers and 15% on the palms.

3. Warm Air Dryers - bacteria increased by 194% on the fingers and 254% on the palms.

The scraping action of paper towels is great for reducing bacteria. Air dryers can blow micro-organisms around the washroom by up to 2m.

What's better for the environment?But bear in mind the relative environmental impacts - whilst Air Dryers consume electricity, Paper Towels consume more resources in their manufacture and are non-recyclable washroom solution.
