RESPONDING TO GOD’S WORD

*UNISON AFFIRMATION OF FAITH (from Our World Belongs to God)As God’s creatures, we are made in his image to represent him on earth, and to live in loving communion with him. By sovereign appointment we are earthkeepers and caretakers: loving our neighbor, tending the creation, and meeting our needs. God uses our skills in the unfolding and well-being of his world. God directs and bends to his will all that happens in his world. As history unfolds in ways we only know in part, all things — from crops to grades, from jobs to laws — are under his control.

God is present in our world by his Word and Spirit. The faithfulness of our great Provider gives sense to our days and hope to our years. The future is secure, for our world belongs to God. The Spirit’s gifts are here to stay in rich variety —fitting responses to timely needs. We thankfully see each other as gifted members of the fellowship which delights in the creative Spirit’s work. He gives more than enough to each believer for God’s praise and our neighbor’s welfare.

Our world belongs to God — not to us or earthly powers, not to demons, fate, or chance. The earth is the Lord’s! In our work, even in dull routine, we hear the call to serve our Lord. We must work for more than wages, and manage for more than profit, so that mutual respect and the just use of goods and skills may shape the work place, and so that, while we earn or profit, useful products or services may result.

*HYMN OF AFFIRMATION We Praise You, O God #612

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE

THE LORD’S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

2019 STEWARDSHIP CAMPAIGN KICKOFF The theme of this year’s campaign is “Generations of Generosity”, in reference to the many multi-generational families blessing this congregation. Some examples of this can be seen on the bulletin board display in the north lobby outside the sanctuary. Stewardship pledge packets will begin delivery on Monday, October 8th. Please consider this prayer when making your campaign pledge: Loving and generous God, thank you for the people of this church, and for the generations of families and friends who celebrate your good works by giving and worshiping together. Help me to be generous as I share my gifts and my stories. Amen.

COMING UP THIS WEEK AT FPC: Did we make a mistake? We want to correct it! Email [email protected] and we’ll fix it.

90 DAYS OF PRAYER (P90)Our Prayer in 90 Days initiative (P90) is now in its seventh week! We are grateful for each of you who have committed to this program, and hope that it has helped you to feel closer to God and to each other. One quick, but powerful, way to keep prayer in the forefront of our minds is a "breath prayer." This is a short, simple prayer you can say in one breath (or perhaps two) as you go about your day. Below are some suggested breath prayers that come from the community of Taize. These are hymns

inside our Glory to God (GTG) hymnal (some are one or two lines from the hymns). Perhaps these will be a blessing to your prayer life this week. You can also look them up on YouTube and listen to the beautiful musical arrangements to which these prayers are set.

Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom. (GTG #227)Holy Spirit, come to us; kindle in us the fire of your love. (GTG # 284)Within our darkest night, you kindle the fire that never dies away. (GTG #294)O Lord, hear my prayer. When I call, answer me. O Lord, hear my prayer. Come and listen to me. (GTG #471)Bless the Lord, my soul, and bless God's holy name. Bless the Lord, my soul, who leads me into life. (GTG #544)In the Lord I'll be ever thankful; in the Lord I will rejoice! (GTG #654)Our darkness is never darkness in your sight; the deepest night is clear as the day light. (GTG #678)The Lord is my light, my light and salvation, in God I trust, in God I trust. (GTG #842)

Don't forget that you may also participate on our P90 private Facebook group page, as well as in our Kneeling with Giants class on Sunday mornings from 9-10 am.

PEACE AND GLOBAL WITNESS OFFERINGThe PC(USA)'s Peace & Global Witness Offering will be collected at FPC today and on World Communion Sunday, Oct. 7. This offering enables the church to promote the Peace of Christ by addressing systems of injustice across the world. Individual congregations, presbyteries and synods, and the wider Presbyterian Mission Agency will each receive a portion of the offering. It will be used to connect with the global witness of Christ's ministries of justice, peace, and reconciliation through collaborative projects of education and Christian witness. Please give generously.

WOMEN’S BIBLE STUDY RESUMES TOMORROW!The Adult Education committee would like to invite all women to please add the Women's Bible Study group to your calendars. This group meets once a month, on the First Monday of the month. The time is at 5:30 and the place is the Hope Room. Starting on October 1st, we will begin a new Horizons Women's Bible study program, "God's Promise: I Am with You" 2018-2019 By Amy Poling Sutherlun. This is a fantastic program and a chance for us to learn and grow together on our faith journeys. This study "takes readers on a journey through scripture to consider circumstances in which God articulated God's promise of presence. This study does not delve deeply into manifestations of God's presence but rather on God's actual articulation of God's promise. We will see anew that God offered these words of profound comfort and commitment to individuals and communities from the time of the patriarchs to that of the prophets; from the judges to the kings; before, during, and after the exile; into the New Testament and beyond, to the end of the age."

BLESSING OF THE ANIMALSA Blessing of the Animals service will be held in the FPC courtyard at 4 p.m. on Sunday, October 14th. The Blessing of the Animals stems from the ministry of St. Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals, whose feast is celebrated in early October.

WORSHIP & MUSIC COMMITTEE NEEDS TOILETRY ITEMSHelp the Worship and Music Committee collect hotel toiletry items. When you travel for business or pleasure, please bring back the toiletry items that you don't use from your hotel room. Our church will make sure these items get put to good use by local organizations that help children and youth who must make sudden changes in their living arrangements. The Worship and Music Committee is providing a collection basket in the north lobby of the church. Please bring your toiletry items on Sunday or any time you are at the church. We will collect through the end of the year and items will be packaged for distribution during March 2019. Thank you!

HELP CHILDREN & YOUTH IN OUR COMMUNITY STAY WARM THIS WINTERFor their Bee the Church project, the Congregational Care and Nurture Committee is partnering with our sisters and brothers at Sunrise Presbyterian Church in their Coats for Kids drive. We will be collecting new or clean, gently-used coats for ages 0-18. These coats will be given to children and youth in our community. A donation box will be available in the lobby to the north of the sanctuarythrough Thursday, October 25. Additionally, monetary donations to be used toward the purchase of coats for children and youth may be dropped off in the offering plate or in the church office prior to Sunday, October 21, with a memo indicating they are for “Coats for Kids.” If you have adult-sized coats, those may also be donated and will be taken to local organizations.
