PASTOR’S COLUMN

Then God said, "Let us make humankind in our image, according to our like-

ness; and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the

air, and over the cattle, and over all the wild animals of the earth, and over every

creeping thing that creeps upon the earth." So God created humankind in his im-

age, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. God

blessed them, and God said to them, "Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth

and subdue it; and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the

air and over every living thing that moves upon the earth." (Genesis 1:26-28,

NRSV)

When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars

that you have established; what are human beings that you are mindful of them,

mortals that you care for them? Yet you have made them a little lower than God,

and crowned them with glory and honor. You have given them dominion over the

works of your hands; you have put all things under their feet… (Psalm 8:3-6,

NRSV) One of the most difficult Sundays to prepare a sermon is the Sunday after Christ-

mas. Ministers are tired. The excitement of Christmas is waning. Many of us are

exhausted. At the same time, we are preparing to close out the calendar year, turn-

ing the page to a fresh calendar, new starts, new hopes and new habits.

Many of you are familiar with the Revised Common Lectionary, which provides

suggested texts for each Sunday of the year. Readings are prescribed from the Old

Testament, the Psalms, the Gospels, and the remainder of the New Testament. For

New Year’s Day, Psalm 8 is the prescribed Psalm. It is my favorite Psalm, even

more so than popular Psalms – Psalm 23, Psalm 46, Psalm 100, Psalm 27, etc. The

author, possibly David (the “Psalms of David” can be either written “by” David or

“for” David), celebrates the majesty of the LORD in comparison to the smallness

of human beings. Perhaps you’ve considered the same themes. God is eternal. We

are temporal. God created a vast universe, and we are microscopic in comparison.

God is perfect and we are not.

Yet, at the same time, God has given human beings dominion over creation.

That’s what I want to talk about next Sunday. What does it mean to have dominion

over creation? What does it mean to rule over creation? What does it mean to care

for creation?

Several years ago, one of our students, Bradley Kay, gave us an excellent ser-

mon on the subject. It’s an important question for us to ask. For some, dominion

means that we have the right to do with creation as we please in order to better

human life. While we have been able to increase technology and, in turn, increase

the quality and quantity of human life, we have also done so at the expense of

natural resources. We have created an enormous amount of waste. And, we have

done so at the expense of larger resources in the world. So, what does it mean to

have dominion over creation that betters our environment, and our world?

God’s rule is for our benefit. It’s not for his pleasure or his own needs. It’s for

us. So, when we in turn are given responsibility to rule, is it for our benefit or is it

for the world’s benefit? Join us, as we consider these questions and prepare for

2019!

Grace and peace, Tim

PEANUT BUTTER AND JELLY CAMPAIGN

Pam Robinson-Newton is a Guardian Ad Litem. She

is presently a court advocate for a 1 year old precious

baby boy. She discussed this project with her mission

group, Fellowship of Christian Women, at their last

meeting. They agreed this was a worthy cause. So,

they chose this ministry as their January outreach pro-

ject. They would like our church members to assist

them in helping a local food bank. Please donate a plastic jar of peanut bet-

ter, or a plastic jar of jelly, or both if you prefer to do so. The donation box

will be downstairs in the Fellowship Sunday School classroom. If you have

any questions, you can call Pam at 287-7939. The food drive will end the

week of January 15, 2019.
