Identity StatementIn response to the call of God, the mission of First Baptist Church is to be a family of believers who proclaim the love of God as revealed in Jesus Christ. We will fulfill this calling through worship, education, fellowship, prayer, and missions in the community and the world.

Core ValuesFirst Baptist has a long and rich history of being an innovative and dedicated Virginia Baptist church. It also proudly recognizes the call of women deacons and the ordination of women into gospel ministry. Some of our core values include:

Soul Freedom – We believe in the priesthood of all believers. We affirm the freedom and responsibility of every person to relate directly to God without the imposition of creed or the control of clergy or government.

Denominational AffiliationsFirst Baptist Church partners with the following Baptist organizations for ministry both in Virginia and throughout the world.

Global Level

The Cooperative Baptist Fellowship is a fellowship of Baptist Christians and churches who share a passion for the Great Commission of Jesus Christ and a commitment to Baptist principles of faith and practice. CBF's mission is to serve Christians and churches as they discover and fulfill their God-given mission.

Regional Level

The Baptist General Association of Virginia (BGAV) was established in 1823 and it has always existed to “furnish the Baptist churches of Virginia a medium of cooperation for the propagation of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and for the advancement of the Redeemer's Kingdom by all methods in accord with the Word of God.”

The Cooperative Baptist Fellowship of Virginia (CBFVA) joins national CBF, based in Atlanta, Ga., in a mission to connect free and faithful Baptists in Virginia as they discover and fulfill their God-given mission.

Brief History of First BaptistAlthough First Baptist Church was organized as Waynesboro Baptist Church in December, 1875, the pioneer Baptists laid a foundation for the growth of Baptist work in Waynesboro as early as 1835. Baptist families moving to this area first held services in a small building in the Oak Hill (Antioch) area on Lyndhurst Road but they were never organized formally. Sunday School began in 1872 in a home on Wayne Avenue and we were organized as a church in 1875 with a membership of 55. Most of these members came from Laurel Hill Baptist Church and Staunton Baptist Church. Dr. C. P. Manly, pastor of Staunton Baptist Church, helped with the organizing and served as the pastor until Rev. Samuel P. Huff was called here by the congregation.

The Baptists bought a small church building on Ohio Street (which is still standing as part of a larger building) from the Methodist congregation in 1874 and used it until 1891 when a new sanctuary was built on the corner of Chestnut Avenue and Eleventh Street under the leadership of Rev. H. G. Ferguson. The membership at that time was 120. The Woman's Missionary Union was organized in 1893 and the ground work was laid for the Waynesboro Public Library in 1912 by a young ladies’ Bible class in the church taught by Mrs. Mary C. Stevens. Over the years several additions were made to the sanctuary building providing Sunday School rooms and a kitchen. In 1940 the sanctuary was remodeled and a new educational building was dedicated. As the years passed a growing membership required two services each Sunday morning and the purchase of a house on Wayne Avenue for overflow Sunday School classes. A mission of the church was operated in the Calf Mountain area for a time but was discontinued. A mission started in the Shenandoah Heights area, however, was organized as a

church in 1949. We also helped organize and sponsor a church in Wayne Hills in 1956 and Westwood Baptist Church in 1959. In April 1961 the decision was made to build a new sanctuary on the comer of Wayne Avenue and Eleventh Street. The first service was held in the new sanctuary March 10, 1963 and the old sanctuary was torn down several years later. The most recent construction was the addition of a new Fellowship Hall on Wayne Avenue that connects to the present sanctuary building with a children's department on the lower floor. The Fellowship Hall, dedicated on March 27, 1997, quickly became a focus for community service as well as expanded church activities. The church has also hosted many community breakfasts, lunches, dinners, and meetings. The church takes part in the annual Lenten Luncheons sponsored by five local churches each year during the weeks of Lent. The Fellowship Hall can be partitioned off into smaller rooms for Sunday School each week and small group meetings. A community Christmas dinner for anyone who wished to attend was begun in 1997 (and continues each year) with food and entertainment provided by the church family, local businesses, and many non-members who wanted to help with the project. Taking part in this has become a tradition with many of our families. On March 1, 2005, David B. Washburn became the twenty-first Senior Minister of First Baptist Church. Under his leadership the church continued to grow in membership, serving the local community and beyond. In October 2007, a second worship service, a contemporary service held in the Fellowship Hall, begun and has seen increased participation and outreach to the Waynesboro community. On August 10, 2015, J. Barrett Owen became the twenty-second Senior Minister of First Baptist Church. Since his arrival, the church has begun a strategic planning process that looks to enhance the mission and ministry of the church as well as rebrand to create a more innovative and contemporary expression of mission. In less than a year, the attendance has increased by 40%, tithes are up 19%, and the children’s and youth ministers have doubled. He credits this early success to a ripe and healthy time in the congregation’s history. A comprehensive church history was written in 1999 and gives more detailed information about both church and W.M.U. history and special projects. Faith Formation Small GroupsAn OverviewAt the August 2016 business meeting, the church unanimously approved the creation of a Faith Formation Team. We have been working behind the scenes to create a system in which small group activity will begin. Here's how it works:

There are three small group sessions a year: Spring, Summer, and Fall. Each session will have an open enrollment season in which members can propose small group ideas to the Faith Formation Team. The team will then aid in the advertisement and space accommodations for each approved small group. Here is an overview of how the yearly calendar will work:

3. When do small groups occur? Whenever it works for the small group. There are, however, designated months in which Spring, Summer, and Fall Small Groups can meet.

4. How do you start a small group? If you want to be officially endorsed by First Baptist, you must fill out a proposal form (see below) and submit it to the Faith Formation Team. The team will meet and be in touch with you about whether or not we can sponsor/accommodate your small group needs.

Ministerial Staff

J. Barrett OwenSenior PastorPastor Barrett is a pastor, writer, and teacher. His passion is seeing the intersection between divinity, culture, and the church. Through preaching, organizational leadership, and spiritual formation, he desires to help people experience the inclusive love of God. He received a Bachelor of Arts in Christian Leadership in 2007 from Belmont University, a Master of Divinity in 2010 from McAfee School of Theology at Mercer University, and a Master of Theology in Homiletics in 2012 from Candler School of Theology at Emory University. For the last eight years, he served as a bi-vocational pastor at Union Baptist in Pine Mountain, GA (2008-10) and National Heights Baptist in Fayetteville, Georgia (2010-15) while working full time as the associate director of admissions at McAfee School of Theology at Mercer University. In addition, Barrett writes for Baptist News Global and EthicsDaily.com. He taught as adjunct faculty for the last two years as well as served on the steering committee for the

Cooperative Baptist Fellowship’s Young Baptist Ecosystem and the Coordinating Council of CBF-GA. He was ordained into Christian Ministry by Mt. Carmel Baptist Church on January 4, 2009. He is married to his best friend and life-partner, Noelle. She is a clinical mental health practitioner. Before moving to Waynesboro, she worked as director of family preservations at the United Methodist Children’s Home serving homeless families with kids as well as teaching court appointed parenting classes to families in the community. She graduated in 2008 from Belmont University in Christian Leadership and 2012 from Mercer University with a Dual Masters in Divinity and Clinical Mental Health Counseling. Barrett and Noelle met at Belmont while serving on a University Ministries team that mentored undergraduates. They married in March 2011 and have a son named Henry, born on Christmas Day, and a baby sister on the way. For quality time, Barrett and Noelle hike, run, and read. They are Atlanta Braves fans as well as love eating at new restaurants, touring museums, traveling, hanging out with friends, and playing board games. When spending time apart, Barrett plays golf while Noelle does art projects or hangs out with friends.

Larry JonesMinister of Music & WorshipLarry joined our staff in September of 2008. He received his Bachelor of Music Education from Morehead State University in 1976, and a Master of Church Music from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in 1983. Larry has served churches in Kentucky, Alabama, and South Carolina. Other experiences include worship leader at the South Carolina CBF State Assembly and the CBF National Assembly; Adjunct Professor Music, The University of North Alabama; and Alabama Singing Men and Brass Ensemble. Larry is currently a member of Schola Cantorum of Waynesboro and the Virginia Baptist Male Chorale. Professional affiliations include the Hymn Society of the United States and Canada, the American Choral Directors Association, and Chorister's Guild. Larry and his wife, Nancy, have one son, Chris, and his wife, Amanda, and a granddaughter, Anna Claire.

Lacey B. DavisMinister to Families with ChildrenGrowing up in a large family of her own—six older brothers, one older sister, and 20 nieces and nephews—Lacey values family and supporting the spiritual growth and formation of various and differing family units. Lacey is passionate about ministry, writing, and faith development for all ages.

Lacey earned her BA in Sociology from Mars Hill College, with triple minors in Religion, Women’s Studies, and Mathematics. She graduated in 2015 with her Master of Divinity degree from Campbell University Divinity School, concentrating in Biblical Studies. The intersection of these two degrees—Sociology and Divinity—is the desire of Lacey’s lifetime ministry. She believes that understanding and engaging social constructs, family entities, and communities creates space for God’s love to be made known and for God’s Kingdom to be here as it is in heaven. Lacey is happily engaged to Chris Wondree, and they both enjoy sports, time with family, good food and coffee, traveling, and watching comedies.

Ben BrownMinister to YouthBen is a native of Richmond, Virginia. He has earned two degrees from Virginia Commonwealth University: a Bachelors in Broadcast Journalism and a Masters in Patient Counseling. Ben is a graduate of the Baptist Theological Seminary at Richmond where he served in many roles including Community Life Representative and Associate Moderator for the Student Leadership Council. Ben has served most recently as a Chaplain Intern at VCU Health System earning 4 units of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) and ministering to youth at Derbyshire Baptist Church where he was ordained into gospel ministry. His hobbies include long distance running, playing the acoustic guitar, trivia, finding the perfect filter on Instagram, VCU basketball and drinking coffee. Ben serves alongside youth and their families.

Office StaffLynn Fields, Administrative Assistant

Lynn W. Fields began her work as our Administrative Assistant in June of 1982. She received a Certificate in Secretarial Science from Blue Ridge Community College. She completed an intensive Church Secretaries Certification through Virginia Baptists. Before her work at FBC, she worked with the Virginia Department for the Visually Handicapped for six years. She is a member of the Chancel and Handbell Choirs and Waynesboro Schola Cantorum. She enjoys spending time with friends and family, following the local Rockingham County Baseball League, and bowling in local leagues as well as in local and state tournaments.

Brenda Miller, Financial Ministry AssistantBrenda began work as our Financial Ministry Assistant in March 2011. Prior to coming to First Baptist, she worked at West Side Baptist in Harrisonburg for 23 years as Church Secretary and then Financial Administrative Assistant. She also spent 3 years as Program Secretary with the Shenandoah Valley Head Start with the Augusta County School Board. She has taken numerous classes and courses at Blue Ridge Community College to further her of knowledge of church work. She has 2 children and 4 grandchildren.

Kim Cook, Custodian

Kim has been working with the FBC Custodial staff since 1989. She is a graduate of Waynesboro High School and attended Blue Ridge Community College. Kim has two sons, Brian and Michael, and two grandchildren.

Kathy Melton, PianistKathy Melton has been a member of First Baptist since 1995. She has been active as a Chancel Choir member, Children's Choir director, deacon, and Sunday School teacher. She is currently serving as pianist for the Chancel Choir and the traditional worship service. Kathy, a native South Carolinian, is a lifelong Baptist and musician. Kathy earned the Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Georgia and maintains a teaching studio, with voice and piano lessons. She is an active Board Member and accompanist for Schola Cantorum of Waynesboro. She and her husband, Alan, have two daughters and two sons-in-law who make their life a joy.

Mary Alice Downs. OrganistMary Alice Downs graduated from William Jewell College in Liberty Missouri with a BA in Music Education. She has taught music in public school and voice and piano classes at Purdue

University. For more than 25 years she was choir director at Westminster Presbyterian in Waynesboro during which time she also taught private voice and piano classes. She has retired from the City of Waynesboro as Voter Registrar where she served for 15 years. She has three grown sons and four grandchildren.

FAQs by GuestsWe want guests to feel comfortable at First Baptist, especially when they arrive on our campus for the first time. Here are some FAQs that will help ensure anyone’s time to First Baptist Church is memorable – for all the right reasons!

First things first — coffee You may find that the conversations and sermons are so stimulating that you won’t need caffeine; however, you are welcome to bring your own to the 8:45am worship service, Sunday school, or ask a volunteer to point you to our Fellowship Hall’s kitchen for freshly brewed coffee, tea, and hot chocolate.

What style of worship do you have? We have two options. The early service is a contemporary expression of Christian worship and starts at 8:45am in the Fellowship Hall. This worship is supported by our Praise Team, a multi-generational group who leads in contemporary Christian music. You also experience the use of multi-media presentations as film and current event clips are used to enhance the worship experience.

The late service meets at 11:00am in the Sanctuary following an hour of Sunday School. Supporting this worship is our Chancel Choir, singing an eclectic selection of music from the master composers of the past and the choral innovators of today. Congregational singing is accompanied by a pipe organ and piano as we sing hymns that reflect our faith.

What should we know about the worship services? Our Sunday worship service has a traditional feel to it, which is a nice counterbalance to our progressive theology. We have a wonderful choir and their musical presentations are always up-lifting. We pray together, sing hymns, have about a seventeen minute sermons, and collect an offering that supports the ministries and missions of the church. You won’t find us

reciting creeds, but we do occasionally recite prayers and litanies together. Once a quarter, we offer communion to all those who would like to partake (any age, regardless of his or her baptismal status). The entire service lasts approximately one hour, though we hope the effects of your time with us will last much, much longer.

What do I do with my children? Childcare is provided at "The Preschool Place" (the white house next to the church building) for infants to four years of age. A nursery worker will be waiting at the door and will be glad to assist you.

A "Children's Moment" is offered in BOTH services as well. Several parents keep their children in the contemporary service until after the Children’s Moment and then take them to nursery.

What is Sunday School like? Sunday School is offered for all ages from 9:50-10:45am. All preschool classes meet in the Preschool Place (the white house next door to the main building). Classes for children in grades 1-5 are offered in the Children's Wing, which is located in the basement under the Fellowship Hall. Youth Classes (grades 6-12) are offered in The Loft (the third floor of the Education Building). Adult classes are offered throughout the Education Building and Main Building for all ages groups from college-age through senior adults. A member of the Hospitality Team or any of our staff are available on Sundays to direct you to an appropriate class.

Do I have to get dressed up? Jesus and his apostles did not have a dress code, so neither do we. You should feel comfortable being yourself here, but you’ll find that most people do get a little spiffed up for Sunday service. Suits and dresses, jeans and t-shirts (G-rated of course – it’s church!) are all welcome here.

Where do I park? Parking is available on three sides of the church along with street parking. If you just circle the church, we are sure you will find something close.

Do you have anything midweek? Wednesday Evening Fellowship meal is offered throughout the school year on Wednesday nights from 5:00-6:00 pm. Reservations are required through the church office at 540-932-1558. Please clearly state your name, number of adult, student (grades 1-12), and preschool (toddler-K) meal reservations. You may also reserve pizza by the slice. Please leave the total number of slices you would like. You may also request to be on our standing reservation list.

Following the meal, many opportunities are offered for all ages. Children may participate in children’s mission education opportunities. A weekly youth Bible Study is offered along with multiple Bible studies for adults.

Music MinistryWe offer two opportunities for worship each Sunday. Each is unique and gives people the chance to encounter God in a way that is personally meaningful.

Chancel ChoirThe Chancel Choir provides music leadership for our traditional worship. Singing an eclectic blend of music from the master composers of the past and the choral innovators of today, the choir leads in worship each Sunday at 11:00am. In addition, they present music programs and lead worship for special occasions during the church year such as Advent/Christmas and Lent/Easter.

The Praise TeamThe Praise Team is a multi-generational, audition group that leads worship each Sunday at 8:45am for our contemporary worship. They use classic and contemporary Christian music to lead in worship that is more informal than the Traditional Worship. Accompanied by guitars, keyboard, and percussion, this group practices each Thursday evening from 6:30-8:00pm.

Handbell ChoirRinging 5 octaves of handbells and 3 octaves of hand-chimes, they prepare music for worship leadership on a regular basis. They also participate in handbell festivals throughout the region and state. Membership in this group is open to those with handbell experience.

The Children's Music Ministry Our Preschool and Elementary School music ministry is incorporated into our Sunday morning activities. As a part of the total curriculum of Bible study and missions, music provides the added dimension of teaching the same principles through song. It is our belief that children trained to utilize music to praise and serve God from an early age will do so throughout their lives.

MissionsFirst Baptist Church has always been a church dedicated to missional living. We encourage members to pursue their calling to be the presence of Christ among their family, friends, neighborhood and beyond. A portion of our offerings is sent to the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship, Cooperative Baptist Fellowship of Virginia, the Virginia Baptist Mission Board (BGAV) and the Augusta Baptist Association. These monies are then used to further the mission efforts of those organizations.

We Shelter

Habitat For Humanity Group

First Baptist Church has a very active Habitat For Humanity group. This group travels each year to Morgantown, NC, to participate in a week of building and fellowship. Anyone is welcome to participate in this once-a-year mission opportunity.

WARM House

First Baptist is a big time supporter of the Waynesboro Area Refuge Ministry, Inc. (WARM). WARM is a 501c3 nonprofit organization. The purpose of WARM is to provide support, temporary shelter or housing, and community development for adults and families in the Waynesboro & Augusta County areas of Virginia. WARM's services are delivered through a winter rotating (thermal) shelter for homeless adults and a beautiful transitional housing facility for homeless women with children. WARM is a non-denominational, faith-based, and community driven organization that strives to help its community through experienced, professional and compassionate care and support for the homeless.

Thermal Shelter

During the winter months, First Baptist opens up the Fellowship Hall for homeless families and individuals. This ministry is conducted as a part of the WARM ministry. Contact the WARM House for information on signing up for shelter.

We Feed Those who are Hungry

Meals on Wheels

First Baptist Church, as partners with Christians United, delivers Meals on Wheels to some of Waynesboro's homebound citizens during September and March. We have been assisting in this ministry since 1976. Meals are prepared at the Waynesboro Senior Center and picked up at 10:50 am. Delivery usually takes 1 to 1 1/2 hours to complete.

Disciples' Kitchen

Alongside neighboring churches, we participate in a collective that partners with 2nd Presbyterian Church to provide a free lunch to anyone and everyone on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays. Contact the church office to get more information about the Disciples’ Kitchen.

Community Dinner

On the first Wednesday night of each month (during the fall and spring semesters) we invite anyone and everyone from the community in for a free dinner and Bible Study. Come as you are and be prepared to eat well.

Salvation Army

Through monthly donations to the Salvation Army, we at First Baptist support four individuals per month to get back on their feet. These individuals are offered money, resources, shelter, and food.

Middle School Food Drive

Over 60% of the students in the Waynesboro School District are on free or reduced lunches. Some of the middle schoolers have been identified as kids who do not get fed on the weekends. Several Sunday School classes partner with the guidance counselors at the middle school to bring snack bags for these at risk kids.

Christmas Dinner

On Christmas Day, we host the community for lunch. On average, over 300 community members come out for a wonderful meal with all the Christmas fixings.

We Clothe

Secret Boutique

At First Baptist Church, we have a clothes closet called the Secret Boutique. The clothes are primarily for middle and high school students but through word-of-mouth and donation drives, we have collected several items for women and men too. Contact the church office to find out more about the Secret Boutique.

Middle School Grab Bag

Not all students in need of clothes can make it to the church, especially those in middle school. We, therefore, partner with the school office to provide clothes to those in need, as they need them. Contact the church office to learn more.

Angel Tree with Department of Family Services

Each year our congregation participates in an Angel Tree gift with the Department of Family Services. Families pick up an angel with the names, sizes, and wishes of a family in the community in need. Families purchase and wrap the gifts and return them to the church for delivery.

Deacon-led Support TeamsOur ministry teams are lead by current diaconate members with additional members from the congregation at large. Participation duties and times are flexible so members are able serve at times that work with their schedules and suit their talents.

Welcome Team– reaches out to visitors to FBC with calls, cards or personal greetings. When new or returning visitors fill out the communication cards, a team member calls and offers a front-door visit and extends an invitation to come again. Information about FBC programs is provided, or contacts are offered.

Child-watch Team - offers child-watch for families participating in church activities and business outside of the normal Sunday morning and Wednesday evening schedules. This team helps families with kids in so everyone feels they are able to connect and serve the Lord through the local church.

Connections Team- keeps in touch with church members and visitors with greeting cards and phone calls. Members contact those in the hospital, with a death or illness in the family, or with a joyous occasion to celebrate. They also send birthday cards to homebound members and stay in touch with members who have lost loved ones during the past year.

Church Rides Team– provides rides to and from Sunday and Wednesday church services for members unable to drive. Team co-chairs will provide a monthly schedule for members.

Prayer Ministry Team– prays daily for the needs of the church, its members, our community, and others. Members coordinate prayer requests, send notes of support as needed, and maintain the private prayer room at FBC. Prayer requests are received via a 24 hour telephone prayer line as well as email, or through the church office. Confidentiality is a priority for team members.

Grief Support Team- offers support to the bereaved during the time of loss to assure them that the church family cares and they are not alone. Team members contact the family and provide the support necessary just after the death of a loved one by reaching out to other teams for Meals, Rides, Small Jobs, etc. Members may also assist by managing the Grief Support calendar, or by praying for church members.

Homebound Team- maintains relationships with FBC members who are confined to their home or a nursing facility by visiting monthly. Team members are assigned specific individuals to visit and relate their needs and condition to church staff and other diaconate teams. The team also coordinates serving of communion and delivers flowers at Christmas. These relationships are a personal way to keep homebound members connected to FBC

Baptism Team– works with the church minister to coordinate the ordinance of baptism as needed throughout the year.

Hospital Visitation Team– visits church members in local hospitals and short term nursing home rehabilitation facilities. The team chair prepares a monthly visitation schedule for members based their schedules or preferences- typically 1 day/month. Members keep church staff or other teams informed of any special needs.

Meals Team– provides dinner or food items to help members and their families during a major event or change in their lives. This can include an illness or injury, a return from the hospital, a death in the family, and a joyous occasion such as the birth of a child, a special family event, or just to say we care.

Small Jobs Team– performs small household jobs for members on an as needed or occasional basis. These jobs can include changing hard-to-reach light bulbs or smoke detector batteries, light furniture moving, yard work, or other needed tasks.

Lord’s Supper Team– coordinates the preparation of the ordinance of the Lord’s Supper for all communion services and homebound members. Co-chairs schedule deacons or former deacons to serve at each communion throughout the year.

2020 Vision: A Strategic PlanThe Journey to 2020

At the start of 2016, we launched a strategic planning initiative. On November 9, 2016, the Ad Hoc Committee announced the completion of a 33-page Vision Report. This report is on the website or you can request a copy from the church office.

The report is an overview of the work completed by the Ad Hoc Committee for the purpose of preparing and participating in a 2020 Vision. It is not intended to be the end of our strategic planning process; rather, it marks the beginning.

At the outset of this journey, senior pastor Barrett Owen reminded the church that God’s future is unfolding. Our preparedness reveals how able we are to participate in it. This report, therefore, chronicles our preparation and authors our participation. Thanks to the good people of First Baptist and the hard work of the Ad Hoc Committee, we are ready to join God on the journey.

The BackstoryOn September 28, 2015, senior pastor Barrett Owen discussed with Church Council the potential of starting a strategic planning process to help shape the direction, potential, and energy for the foreseeable future. It was agreed upon by Council the need of conducting a robust, congregational conversation on the future and energy of our ministries. Following the September 28 and November 30, 2015 council meetings, Council called for moderator Stu Crow to form an ad hoc committee to lead a strategic planning process.

The following church members agreed to serve on the Ad Hoc Committee: Stu Crow, Rick Kane, Lora Hamp, Carolynn Coiner, Carla Thomas, and David Collier with Pastor Barrett as an at-large member.

At the November 30 Council meeting, Barrett offered the framework for the strategic planning process. With the help of Dr. Bill Wilson, Director of the Center for Healthy Churches, Barrett presented a proven model from adaptive leadership strategists known as Appreciative Inquiry. It is the same process Dr. Wilson uses as a consultant.

The Strategic ProcessThe strategic planning process has multiple phases intending to span multiple years. This process was taken and adapted from resources acquired from the Center for Healthy Churches at no charge.

First is the dreaming phase. The congregation comes together for three “Listening Sessions” focusing on the church’s past, present, and future.

Secondly, the church, through the leadership of the Ad Hoc Committee, evaluates the data collected to discern what areas need the most focus (i.e. priorities).

Thirdly, the Ad Hoc Committee enlists the help of standing committees and teams to further nuance and dream about how to fill each of the corresponding priorities.

Fourthly, the Ad Hoc Committee, in partnership with established teams and committees, present all findings at the final three quarterly business meetings (May 4, August 10, November 9) offering recommendations and visions for the future.

Fifthly, the church implements the approved recommendations while consistently evaluating the effectiveness and contribution of each recommendation to the overall mission of the church.

Valley Pastoral Counseling Center Established in 1980, Valley Pastoral Counseling Center is a non-profit interfaith and interdenominational pastoral counseling center serving the mental health needs of the surrounding area.

We are dedicated to providing counseling services to individuals of all ages, couples, families, and groups with a full range of emotional and spiritual concerns. It is our goal to respond to inquiries for services within 24 hours of your initial contact. We coordinate our care with local physicians, psychiatrists, and hospitals when medication and/or hospitalization are appropriate for treatment in an effort to facilitate the best possible outcome. We also provide consultation and educational services to congregations and other organizations.

At VPCC we honor your religious orientation. Pastoral Counselors are trained to provide services to clients who have varied spiritual orientations and religious views. We also invite those individuals who identify with the segment of the population who are spiritual but not religious. Beyond the religious community, we provide mental health services to the community at large. All will be warmly welcomed at VPCC which is an affiliated institution of the American Association of Pastoral Counselors

Confidentiality VPCC Counselors adhere to the ACA and AAPC Code of Ethics in addition to state laws related to privileged communication and confidentiality.

Accreditation Valley Pastoral Counseling Center is an Institutional Affiliate of the American Association of Pastoral Counselors, and the only affiliated center of its kind in the surrounding area. VPCC Associates are licensed by the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Weekday Preschool

First Baptist Waynesboro’s Weekday Preschool offers a Christian environment which helps your child develop social and academic readiness skills for success not only in kindergarten, but later in their schooling and their life. The school extends this service to families within our church and community and to those of other denominations and faith. We offer several whole school field trips, grade level trips and guest speakers as well as night events including spring concerts and dad's night.

Goals for each child: • To develop a positive self-concept and to experience success; • To develop respect for others • To grow in their ability to work and play with others; • To expand language abilities and to develop pre-reading skills • To develop gross motor and fine motor coordination and enhance established skills • To grow in the awareness and knowledge of our world; • To develop a love and desire (and to become) a lifelong learner.

ClassesClasses are offered for children ages two-and-a-half through Pre-K. A child must be two-and-a-half , three, or four years old by September 30th of the beginning school year in order to enter 1

the respective class. All children are to be potty trained before entering the Pre-K class. Potty training is not necessary in the younger classes.

School hours are 8:45 am to 11:45 am daily. Our school year runs from Labor Day through Memorial Day

Summer CampsNew this summer--7 weeks of summer camp.

In order to register for summer camps, which still have openings, you must call the preschool to validate availability and to reserve your spot. Summer camp deposits are non-refundable and are filled on a first-come first-serve basis. All students for summer camp must be fully potty trained, no exceptions.

Our summer camps are open to the community for children 3 years old to rising Kindergarten.

Preschoolers learn best in an environment that encourages a predictable daily schedule and routine that creates a sense of classroom community as well as a sense of what they can expect and predict on their own.. Children at FBC Weekday Preschool engage in daily routines including: circle time, outdoor play or indoor gross motor movements, story time, learning center time, art, music, and small group instruction.

The Importance of PlayFBC Weekday Preschool continues to operate under the belief that preschoolers learn best through their interests and through developmentally appropriate play-based experiences. Play will continue to be the main focus of our daily routine through centers such as blocks, dramatic play, sensory tables, manipulatives, and writing—to name a few.

CurriculumFBC Weekday Preschool utilizes curriculum based on research of current best practices in the field of early childhood education along with well-known developmentally appropriate practice. We are proud to utilize Core Knowledge Language Arts (CKLA): Preschool for our 4 year old Pre-Kindergarten Classrooms, the Core Knowledge Preschool Sequence for our 3 year old Preschool classrooms, and the Creative Curriculum for Infants and Toddlers for our 2 year old

classrooms. All of these curriculum selections are research driven and rooted well within our beliefs of developmentally appropriate practice and play at the heart of learning.

Both curricula tie well into daily routines that are familiar and appropriate for preschoolers and encourage the use of daily center time in the integration of instruction. In addition, all curricula offer chances for students to be served individually, within a small group, and as a whole group or whole class.

AssessmentAssessment is vital for all preschoolers as it screens for any developmental concerns and gives teachers a chance to see how they are progressing throughout the year. Assessment will be ongoing through portfolio collection within our curriculum as it allows. Additionally, assessment will be offered using the Early Learning Accomplishment Profile (E-LAP) and Learning Accomplishment Profile (LAP) three times a year (beginning, middle, and end of the year) so that you, as a parent, have appropriate documentation of your child as a whole and how they are developing in school. Assessments serve as a tool to begin conversations with your child’s teacher about how they function in the classroom and how we can best meet their needs so that they are best prepared for Kindergarten.

In our Pre-Kindergarten classroom we utilize the PALs literacy screening tool in the fall and in the spring to track and measure growth in early literacy skills. This assessment is widely used throughout the state of Virginia and is a great opening conversation with your child's future Kindergarten teacher.
