Participants heard excellent preaching from Johnny Wary (Week of Compassion), Pat Donohoo (Disciples Women), and Jose Morales (Regional Minister). Jane and Peg assisted in the final worship, led by Disciples Women. Pastor Cynthia, as regional moderator, led the business session and shared in worship leadership. Business items included: welcoming four Idaho Disciples congregations to share in ministry with CRMR, receiving financial reports (the region's operating expenses ended in "the black" for the past 4 years running), and electing new ocers to include: Diane Ashton moderator, Georgeanne Tomlinson vice moderator, Jennifer Force secretary, and Bob Vitt treasurer. The Mission Commission determined the lunches could be increased to 100 with the understanding that this is the limit that will be done. On a typical Saturday, we currently distribute 66 lunches at King’s Corner, 5 at Rescued Treasurers, 4 at the Good Steward, 15 at First Interstate Motel, 10 at Legacy Apartments and 3 to a man that lives under the bridge. Some people may take more than one lunch because they are picking up for other members of their family or this will be the only food they have for the entire weekend. Due to the generosity of the congregation, YOU are making a dierence in the lives of the people being served by the Sandwich Ministry. Thank you for all you do and if you have any questions or concerns, please contact me at 785-577-4726. THE PASTOR’S COLUMN: A LIFE OF LEARNING AND LOVE.... SABBATH REST   The   Biblical   concept   of   “sabbath”   refers  to  a  time  of  rest,  a  designated  period  set  aside  to  renew  one’s   relationship  with  God.     Sabbath   is  often   seen   as   one   day   set   aside   for  worshipful  rest   every   seven   days,   related   to   Genesis.   ”So  God   blessed   the   seventh   day   and   hallowed   it,  because  on  it  God  rested  from  all  the  work  that  he  had  done  in  creation.”  Genesis  2:3  NRSV     Jews,   like   ancient   Hebrews,   observe  sabbath   on   Saturday,   the   7th   day   of   the   week.    Christians   take   sabbath   on   the   1st   day   of   the  week,  a  sign  of  celebrating  Christ’s  resurrection,  meaning   sabbath   also   indicates   a   longing   for  new   life.     In   the  OT,   there   is   also   a   sabbath   or  “jubilee”  year   -‐  one   full  year  every  seven  years,  when   Pields   lay   fallow,   slaves   are   freed,   debts  forgiven,   and   all   creation   rests   and   celebrates  renewed   relationship   with   God.     This   Biblical  model  of  1  year  rest  every  7  years  provides  the

basis   for   sabbaticals   among   academics.     Many  tenured   college   professors   receive   a   sabbatical  year   for   study,   publishing,   and   intentionally  restful   activities   as   a   means   of   professional  renewal.    For  clergy,  a  more  common  model  is  a  3-‐month  sabbatical  every  5  years.    This  is    called  for  in  the  policies  of  FCC  Casper.             I  am  exceedingly  grateful  for  the  privilege  of  my  upcoming  3-‐month  sabbatical  —  for  rest,  renewal,   study,   travel,   writing   and   the  uninterrupted   period   of   grace   it   will   allow   for  me   to   refresh   my   relationship   with   the   Lord.    Due   to  both   the  needs  of  our  congregation  and  changes   in  our  family’s  travel  plans,   the  date  of  my  sabbatical  start  has  shifted  to  July  7.    Please  continue   to   pray   for   our   search   team   as   they  review   names   of   strong   candidates   to   provide  pastoral   leadership  alongside  our  elders  during  July,  August  &  September.    Pastor  Cynthia

TENTATIVE  SABBATICAL  SCHEDULE  July  6  -‐  preach  Pinal  sermon  before  sabbatical.    July  7  -‐  sabbatical  begins.

JULY:  REST.    Travel  in  New  Mexico.  Begin  research  /  writing  /  art  project  on  the  Book  of  Psalms.  Possible  Spirituality  &  Arts  Event  in  Santa  Fe.

AUGUST:    RENEWAL.    Travel  to  the  Midwest.    Evangelism  training  event  in  IN.      “Habits  of  the  Heart  for  Healthy  Congregations”  with  Parker  Palmer  in  Racine,  WI.  Week  at  the  University  of  Chicago/Disciples  Divinity  House  for  theological  study.

Continue  work  on  Psalms  project  with  daily  reading,  journaling,  study  and  “praying  in  color.”  SEPTEMBER:  RE-‐ENTRY.    Intentionally  prepare  to  return  to  ministry  at  FCC  Casper  while

nurturing  healthy  life  patterns,  balancing  prayer  &  work.  Conclude  Psalms  project  or  form  plan  to  schedule  completion  as  needed.

Conclude  sabbatical  travel  in  San  Diego  at  national  Disciples  Pastors’  Retreat,    led  by  our  General  Minister  &  President,  Sharon  Watkins  -‐  Sept.  30  -‐  Oct.  2nd.

Oct.  7th  -‐  Sabbatical  ends.  !A  SUMMER  WITH  THE  PSALMS.    During  Rev.  McBride’s  sabbatical,  she  will  work  on  a  research/art   project   on   the   Psalter.     The   Bible’s   150   psalms   cover   a   range   of   human  emotions:   anger,   joy,   delight,   confusion,   hope,   despair.     Since   ancient   times,   people   of  faith   have   practiced   the   discipline   of   reading   a   portion   of   the   Psalms   every   day.     As  Pastor  Cynthia  savors  the  rest,  rePlection  and  renewal  of  her  sabbatical,  all  of  our  Church  Family   is   invited   to   “journey  with   her”   by   traveling   through   the   Psalms   this   summer.    Read  a  Psalm  a  day  –  or  even   just  a   few  verses.      You  might  choose   to  keep  a   journal  during  this  time.    Set  a  aside  a  notebook  where  you  can  write  down  your  own  insights,  rePlections,  questions,  or  reactions  to  your  reading  of  the  Psalms-‐  just  as  our  pastor  will.

GARAGE SALE!8:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 7, 2014!

It’s been many, many years since our last garage sale so hopefully we will have a HUGE sale. If you need help cleaning out or picking up your items for sale, contact Jane Wallace @ 258-2063. She could use volunteers at church

to help on Friday afternoon (June 6th) and on the day of the sale. The board has determined that half of the proceeds will go to the Bridges account and half to help the Property Commission repaint/redecorate interior areas of our church building. Items can be brought to the church and stored in the garage. Please call Jane if you have any questions.

Our church board has agreed to move forward with the Pumpkin Patch 2014. The first load of pumpkins is set to arrive Wednesday, October 8th. So we have pumpkins, we have the desire, and we have the place--- what we need is a LEADER for the patch--someone that can COORDINATE a team that will set up, decorate, unload, maintain a tidy patch, coordinate sales and finance, schedule preschool story times and take down when the month is over. Please contact the church office or Jennifer Grooms if you, or your family, or you and a good friend would be willing to take on the leadership for the patch.

!Bible Display Case

! Mankind came very close to losing access to the Bible. Today we take its existence for granted, thinking that it has always been accepted. However, we as a society came very close to losing access to the Bible for the common man. The fact that almost anyone in the world can read the Bible today is owed to the sacrifices made by countless men and women throughout history. The Bible could easily have been a ‘banned book’ even today were it not for those efforts made long ago. !! Quoting Lani McBee: “In Max Lucado’s book, Experiencing the Words of Jesus, he has a chapter called “he’s Teaching...The Bible is not a newspaper to be skimmed but rather a mine to be quarried. Search for it like silver and hunt for it like hidden treasure. Then you will understand respect for the Lord, and you will find that you know God.” Lani continued: “the Bible Display Case..it holds the hidden treasures found in the Bible..it is a mine to be quarried. The Bible Display Case can be used for a Sunday School class with the display case at the focal point.”!! Rest in the chairs beside our Bible Display Case and read words from the Septuagint, the Wycliff and Geneva Bible, and others. Soon we’ll each have the availability of listening to the recorded words of our church leaders and also those of our youth as they recite passages from Genesis and the Psalms from Bibles of old.!! Thank you, members of First Christian Church for making this display case possible. ALSO a tremendous THANK YOU to Steve Huckfeldt, Cal Decker, and Roger Cook, who spent countless hours on the construction of the case and for the donations received from the congregation and the WTM&S Committee to complete the project. Be sure to stop by the church and see the case.!! ! ! ! ! ! ! ~~~Jack Walts, Chairman of the Board, FCC
