Student & Young ProfessorPaper Competition Awards:Each year the DFI Educational Trust sponsors apaper competition for students and young professors. The purpose of the competitions is to encouragestudents and young professors to write papersrelating to deep foundation design and construction.

Student and professor submissions are judged separately by the DFI papercompetition committee with assistance by DFI technical committee membersin order to determine the best papers each year. Winners are provided apresentation spot at the conference, publication of their winning paper in theconference proceedings or DFI Journal, full conference registration, $750travel stipend, two-year complimentary DFI individual membership and 20publications from DFI’s library. Join us at the Awards Banquet tocongratulate this year’s winners.

Career FairDFI will hold a Career Fair during theAnnual Conference in the exhibit hall.Exhibiting companies are encouraged tosubmit job openings to DFI HQ([email protected]) to have posted during the conference. Representativesfrom the participating companies will be available to meet and network withstudents and young professionals at their booths in the exhibit hall. We expectthis to be a great networking opportunity for all who participate.

DFI Student Spaghetti BridgeCompetitionThis competition will kick-off the three-day-long conference for collegestudents and recent graduates on Tuesday, October 16th. Five teams ofstudents from various colleges and universities will participate. Studentteams will present their bridges on Wednesday, October 17th during thewelcome lunch to attendees where they will be tested for load capacity. The winning bridge will be determined by the highest load/bridge weightratio. The winning team will receive a cash prize of $1,000 from DFI.

Young Professional RegistrationIn an effort to meet DFI’s goal ofhaving young professionals andstudents make up half of the totalattendance, DFI is offering adiscounted rate to YoungProfessionals. A full conferenceregistration is offered for industrypersonnel under the age of 30 at half

price. Just $395!! This rate includes all conference activities that donot require a separate ticket, providing students and youngprofessionals with the total conference experience. Networking, learning from senior level personnel and interacting with peers arejust some of the benefits. Bring two of your under 30 colleages forthe price of one!

For Young Professionals and Students

Wind down after a full day of conference activities at the Awards Reception. This event takes place prior to the Awards Dinner (separate ticket item)

and is open to all conference attendees. Enjoy live country musicand learn the two-step during the reception, then settle

in for the banquet and the award presentations.

The Distinguished Service Award and the new Bill Bermingham Innovation Award will be presentedat the Award Banquet - winners to be announced!

The 9A Pedestrian Underpass is a cut-and-cover tunnel connecting New YorkCity’s World Financial Center (WFC) at its new Wintergarden Pavilion to theWorld Trade Center (WTC) Tower 1, crossing beneath the heavily traffickedRoute 9A (9A). The underpass replaces the former North Pedestrian Bridgewhich was destroyed on 9/11. It was designed by the Port Authority of NewYork and New Jersey (PANYNJ) and the Downtown Design Partnership (DDP),a Joint Venture of STV, AECOM, and PTG). The design utilizes a perimetersecant pile wall to accommodate conventional bottom-up construction of thetunnel box.

Three concurrent events will take place the day before the conference. A separate registration fee is required. DFI and its technicalcommittees welcome your participation in one of them to enhance your conference experience. Additionally, the 15 committees willmeet Tuesday night and Wednesday morning to discuss past business and future activities. Their meetings are open to the public at nocharge, so sit in on one and see DFI’s mission in action.

Attendees receive a certificate verifying Professional Development Hours (amount to be determined)(NYS approval pending. Florida Sate Provider Number 4072 – include your license number on registration form).

Register for one event only as they run concurrently.

Augered Cast-in-PlacePile Short Course &Specialty SeminarAugered cast-in-place (ACIP) piles, also knownas continuous flight auger (CF A), are beingincreasingly used for supporting buildings, bridges, sound barrier walls and many otherstructures around the world. Auger piles, withtheir load-displacement behavior generally fall inbetween that of a drilled shaft and a driven pile, and hence need to be designed for variousapplications. ACIP piles are being also socketedin rocks. Different design methods are availablein practice to estimate the ultimate bearingcapacity of ACIP piles based upon in-situ soilproperties, unit skin friction and unit end bearing. There are various types of ACIP piling systemscurrently in use and designing and constructingissues (installation process and equipment),specifications including the QA/QC procedures, for ACIP piles will be discussed. Load testresults from various geological formations will bediscussed. Several case studies including ahighway bridge totally supported on ACIP pileswill be presented.

Design & Constructability of Diaphragm WallsThis short course will provide an oversight of thedesign and practical application of the use ofdiaphragm walls as support of excavationsystem and will be of particular interest tocontractors, developers & transportationauthority representatives, designers andconsultants involved in major earth retentionprojects of a challenging nature especially inurban environment. The design oversight willprovide an introduction of the d-wallperformance compared to other earth retentionsystems, design of circular shafts and top-downsystems and review of recommendedmaintenance and repair procedures. Thepractical application oversight will focus onequipment selection & characteristics, type ofpanel joints, logistic requirements, quality controland specific features that can be incorporated ina d-wall. A panel composed of slurry wallcontractors and design engineers will presentthis short-course based on case histories toillustrate the application of the d-wall techniquepresented in the course.

Practical, Prudent, andEffective Use ofComputer Software forLateral Analysis of DeepFoundationsA short course entitled "Practical, Prudent, andEffective Use of Computer Software for theLateral Analysis of Deep Foundations" is beingplanned for the Deep Foundations Institute's2012 Annual Conference in Houston, Texas. Thepurpose of this short course is to provideengineers, designers, contractors and softwareproviders with the opportunity to share opinionson the effective and practical use of computersoftware for geotechnical analysis and design. The focus of the session is oriented towardproviding attendees with the information neededfor selection and appropriate application ofsoftware for lateral analysis of deep foundationsfor building support and slope stabilization.

2012 Keynote Lecture • Wednesday, October 17, 2012: 1:45 pm

“Stability Analyses for Slope Stabilization Measures – Lessons Learned”Dr. Stephen G. Wright, P.E.

Presentation Summary:Slope stabilization with piles, piers, soil nails andtieback anchors is usually analyzed employing someform of conventional limit equilibrium slope stabilityanalysis software adapted to include such reinforcingelements. While the inclusion of reinforcing elementsinto such software is straightforward, the analysesare sometimes complex with unexpected oruncertain results. Examples of lessons learned fromsuch analyses and recommended practices forreducing potential problems and errors will bepresented.

About Dr. Stephen Wright: Dr. Wright is a professional engineer and professoremeritus of the University of Texas at Austin. Hereceived B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from theUniversity of California, Berkeley. He has over 40years of experience with teaching, research andconsulting in geotechnical engineering withspecialization in the area of soil shear strength andslope stability. He is the author of numeroustechnical papers and reports, co-author of the bookSoil Strength and Slope Stability by John Wiley andSons, and the current U. S.
