Safety Tips by Bob Shuttleworth, Chairman of the Safety Committee
Theodore Roosevelt said "You never have trouble if you are prepared for it". Would you know what to do if your home caught fire? Would you know how to escape a crazed mob? Would you know how to handle yourself if confronted by a gun? Have you taught your children the right way to act if they are in danger? In a series of articles, answers to questions you might have concerning your safety and the safety of your family or loved ones will be addressed. ONE WAY TO PREVENT IDENTITY THEFTWhen paying for purchases at a cash register, don't allow people around you to see your credit cards, driver's licenses, checks, etc. Thieves have been known to use a cell phone to make photos of people's documents. If this happens to you, they will email the information to a cohort who will then take advantage of your accounts before you can get home.
A Note to Parents from the Safety Team: The safety of our children is of utmost importance! Please accompany your children if they need to go to the restroom during worship.
The Rebekah Circle will meet Monday, April 18 at the home of Carolyn Clayton, 5 Ridgefield Place. Meeting starts promptly at 9:30 a.m.

us to help people in the best way possible. It is why they exist.
3) INVOLVE YOUR PASTORS. If someone is asking you for cash in or around this building, please find one of us immediately. We may already be aware of the person's situation and needs. Rest assured, we will not allow any person to go hungry. We will attempt to work within the system which already exists to provide for their needs. If this cannot be done, we will take the responsibility of providing for their needs as your representatives. FUMC gave out over $8,000 in 2010 for benevolent assistance through the Pastor’s Fund.
Suggested words you might use when approached are:
“I want to help you in the best way and I believe that means directing you to talk with one of our pastors about your needs”
“I am sorry that you are in this difficult situation. I cannot give you money, but I believe it might be helpful for you to speak with one of our pastors.”
4) NOTIFY A MEMBER OF OUR SECURITY COMMITTEE – THEY ARE RECOGNIZED BY THE ID BADGE AND TWO-WAY RADIO WITH AN EAR BUD THEY ARE WEARING. We must do all within our power to protect everyone from harm. The Security Committee has special training in how to deal with these issues. Their goal is to provide a safe and secure environment for all who seek to worship at FUMC. The members of your 2011 Security Committee include: Bob Shuttleworth (Chairperson), Gary Young, Kevin Hatcher, Carolyn Forde, Lisa Hurd, Barnett Scott, Linda Warren-Seely, Tom Stallings, Bill Hymers and Robert Hopper.
Seeking, as you are, to become a faithful disciple in a complicated world!

“Hey, Buddy, Can You Spare a Dime?” As a college student in downtown Atlanta, I remember very well the feeling of being pulled in different directions when it came to the plight of the needy. I was taught by the church and by Christian parents to take the words of Jesus to heart as much as possible. In the small town I had grown up in, there were several "down and out" folks that the community took care of by providing meals, odd jobs, and handouts. I was provided with this good example by a loving, caring community.
So, when I passed someone on the street in the big city asking for money, my heart said, "Help in any way you can." On the other hand, I learned very quickly, from practical experience, never to allow someone to walk too closely behind me. I also began to understand that the great need of an urban environment far outpaced my ability to give. I eventually caught on to the fact that some were "professionals" who used guilt as a tool of manipulation. I understood the clear mandate of the gospel to "...Give to everyone who begs from you.... (and to) Do to others as you would have them do to you." Yet, I struggled then, and I struggle today, with what is the right thing to do when someone asks for money.
I suppose this became even more complicated for me when I was once asked for money to buy food and I offered, instead, to walk with someone to McDonald's and purchase them a meal. This offer was refused in no uncertain terms. It was not food they were craving. It was a different and harmful substance. At a young age, I had discovered a truth about the complex problem of homelessness and those in need. Unfortunately, it is often difficult to separate the intertwining issues of addiction and mental illness from those who are simply "down on their luck." I'm not saying that all persons who ask for money also have problems with addiction or mental illness, but these issues often do "touch" one another.
We seem to know on some level that giving money is not the best answer but we feel "trapped" or led by an over-sensitive conscience to simply do something. In truth,
if issues of addiction are present, giving money can sometimes harm the person you are seeking to help. Unfortunately, giving money may also result in the person returning and seeking assistance from some of our more vulnerable members. At best, it prolongs the problem and does little or nothing to get to the root of the problem.
In recent weeks we've had some incidents on church property that seem to be "testing" us a bit. As a downtown church, we are going to have this from time to time. Again, this is a complex issue and I don't want you to hear me saying we should not help. Clearly, we should. However, rather than feel "compelled" to just give money, let me offer a few additional thoughts and options which seem to me to be in line with our Scriptural mandate:
1) PLEASE REFRAIN FROM GIVING MONEY! Never hesitate to say, "...Silver and gold have I none but what I have I give unto you..." (See Acts, Chapter 3 and the story of Peter and John at the Gate called Beautiful.)
While choosing a safe environment with others around, take a few moments to listen to the person. Offer them encouragement and/or a prayer, treat them as a person and grant them dignity. Do not apologize for not giving them money.
2) MENTION OUR CHURCH’S SUPPORT OF AGENCIES such as RIFA (Regional Inter-Faith Association) and ARM (Area Relief Ministries). These agencies are highly organized and know how to effectively help with the multi-faceted issues which present themselves. Know the location of these agencies and direct those who ask for your help to these agencies. (ARM is located at 108 SouthChurch Street and RIFA at 219 North Highland Avenue).
Know that by directing people to these agencies, you are not “passing the buck,” as 100% of your Easter offering, Christmas offering, and monthly communion offering goes to help fund the work of local agencies. In 2010, FUMC gave $18,000 to RIFA, ARM and other agencies in Jackson and surrounding areas for benevolent work in the name of Jesus Christ. These agencies want to work with

Combined Summer Session: June/July 2011
All Sunday School classes are invited to consider participating in a Combined Summer Session the Sundays of June and July. Since Sunday School attendance is often down significantly in the summer, your class may consider joining with a larger combined group for this period. Joel Allen will lead a series called Paul: Apostle of the Heart Set Free. We will use a DVD study for the first ½ of the class and go on our own for the rest.
If your Sunday School class would like to participate, please contact Joel Allen, [email protected] or 606-627-5126. We plan to meet on the mezzanine at present but may move depending on response.
FUMC HAPPENINGSNew information boards are up and running. Many thanks to Jim Weaver for his invaluable help with the wiring for the digital signage! Jim is pictured above with installers of the flatscreen TVs.

Jackson Community Gardens Updateby Tharon Kirk, JCG Coordinator
Jackson Community Gardens is gearing up for another year. We are pleased that most of the gardens plan to continue this year and have plans for involving more people and becoming more efficient. Emmett and Jim Barker will be coordinating the Glendale garden again this year. That garden had a very successful fall season and the gardeners there are “chomping at the bit” to get going for spring and summer. Mike Millson will be overseeing the garden at the church’s property on Hatton Street. He has already tilled and begun planting the garden. Mike has some new persons interested in gardening there. Last year Mike provided almost 200 pounds of squash and tomatoes to the RIFA Soup Kitchen from our garden on Hatton. Grace Presbyterian will also be continuing their garden this year. It is located on Campbell Street.
The St. Luke’s Garden on Main Street is being revitalized this year. Under the leadership of a Union University student intern, there is a group of homeless men at Area Relief Ministries (ARM) that is going to work that garden. They will plant foods that can be picked and eaten raw. Kaye Hill recently divided her strawberry plants and donated the extras for that garden. Thanks, Kaye!!! If you have extra hoes, rakes, shovels, or other gardening tools that you no longer use, ARM needs some tools for homeless men to use in working
that garden. You can bring the tools to the church and we’ll see that ARM gets them.
We are glad to welcome Bemis United Methodist Church as a new partner in Jackson Community Gardens. Bemis UMC has some property that they will convert to a garden but in the meantime they are going to use two raised beds as part of their neighborhood children’s program.
We are heavily dependent on volunteers to help us in our work. We are grateful to Dan Morris’ Nursery for tilling our gardens for us. When you go to buy flowers from them, let them know you appreciate their contribution to our gardens. We have had some hay bales donated which we will use to line the walkways between gardens. You can help us by contributing financially or by offering your services. Helping people to have a healthy, safe food supply is part of being a good steward. Plus, there is just something special about eating food you have grown yourself, not to mention that gardening is fun and good for the soul!
See you in the garden!

It would be very hard to express Paul’s feelings and love for you and what you mean to me. Just remember, you are very special and again I thank you for everything and Paul would thank you from the bottom of his heart. Please keep me in your prayers.”
