First Holy Communion
Congratulations to all the pupils in Second Class who made their First Holy Communion on
Saturday 14th
May in Lismore and Sunday 15th May in Ballysaggart. The churches were beautifully
decorated with their artwork. The children participated fully in readings, singing, and prayers of the
faithful, offertory procession and commentary. The ceremony was enhanced by the singing of Fourth
Class, accompanied by Billy Hogan. The children of Ballysaggart formed the choir for their
ceremony accompanied by Aoife Bennett. Father Cullinan officiated at the ceremonies. We all
missed the presence of Canon Nugent, R.I.P. on that day. He was always attended the Holy
Communion ceremonies and really enjoyed them.

Farewell to Phil McGrath
We will all be very sorry to say
goodbye to Phil at the end of
June. Phil has been a classroom
assistant in the school for the last eight years. It is
true to say that she has brightened up all our lives
with her friendly and jovial disposition. Many
thanks for your commitment and dedication to
Bunscoil Bhóthar na Naomh.
No Uniform Day
A total of €677.75 was collected in school on Friday June 17th
.
Mr. Prendergast is among a group of people committed to a
sponsored cycle to the Munster Hurling Final in aid of
St.Carthage‟s House, Lismore. The proceeds from the “No
Uniform Day” will add to the fundraiser. Thanks to all pupils and
parents who contributed so generously.
Concern
Contribution
Traditionally, pupils
from Sixth Class,
following their
Confirmation, make a
voluntary contribution
to Concern. This year
was no exception. The
children contributed
€440. This money will
help to improve the
lives of those less
fortunate than
ourselves. We wish all
these pupils the best of
luck in their second
level education.

End of Year School Mass
All the staff and pupils
attended Mass in St.Carthage’s Church in Lismore on Wednesday June 22nd celebrated by
Father Cullinan. A representative from First
to Sixth class read a prayer of the faithful.
Pupils from Junior and Senior Infants brought
up the offertory gifts and Sixth Class pupils read the readings. Fourth
Class sang hymns accompanied by Billy
Hogan. It was a lovely ceremony giving thanks for a good year’s work.

New School Extension
Work commenced on the school extension on May 30th 2010. Thankfully on Wednesday June 15th 2011 teachers
and classes moved into the new the building. The wonder and awe on the children’s faces as they viewed the
building for the first time was worth experiencing. Imagine upgrading from a pre-fab to a state of the art
classroom with plenty of natural light, interactive whiteboards and remote control operated sky light windows!
They quietly and carefully went about their business of carrying all their books, tables, chairs and bags to the
new classroom. There was an air of giddiness and excitement shared among teachers and pupils. We are very
grateful to all the male parents who offered their help on the day. They moved tall presses, chart presses and
anything else we wanted. The carpenters among the group even shelved the P.E. store press in the hall. Bunscoil
Bhóthar na Naomh are very lucky to have such a willing and supportive group of parents. We hope to spend many
productive and happy years in the building.

Most classes went on their school tour on Friday June 3. It was a glorious day, which added to the
enjoyment of the children.
Bunratty Folk Park
Second, Third and Fourth Classes went to
Bunratty Folk Park in County Clare. This was a
fantastic tour for this age group. Firstly, they
got a guided tour of Bunratty Castle. Our guide
was entertaining and informative. Next we
explored the Folk Park. This was a delight and a
revelation. The children were allowed to roam
from a farmer’s cottage in the 1900’s to a shop in
the 1960’s. The school with its old desks, copies
and inkwells was of great interest. By 1.30pm
they had worked up an appetite for a meal in
Supermac’s on the Ennis Road.
Senior Infants and First Class.
Fota Wildlife Park was the
chosen destination for these
class groupings. They had a
wonderful day observing the
animals, reptiles and birds in
the summer sunshine.
Dunmore East Adventure Centre
Fifth and Sixth Class went to
Dunmore East Adventure Centre.
The success of this tour depends on
the weather. We were very
fortunate as it was ideal weather for
water sports. The water sports
included kayaking, pedal boats and
powerboat trip.
On land they were introduced to
archery and rock-climbing. They
finished the day with a trip to
McDonald’s in Dungarvan.

Tower‟s Trail
In conjunction with the Bealtaine
Festival, Miss Buck’s Senior Infants
and First Class enjoyed a tour of the
Towers. They walked through the
historical woodland where they
explored the world of nature. Many
common trees and plants were identified and they even
searched for mini-beasts. Thanks to the staff of Lismore
Heritage Centre for their kind invitation.
Local History Tour
Fourth Class completed a module on local history
concentrating on the important buildings in
Lismore. As a treat, they visited the Heritage
Centre to view the video on the locality. This was
very meaningful for them. Later they got a guided
tour of Lismore Cathedral. This made the history
come to life for them.
Knockanore Cheese Farm
Fifth Class went on a trip to
Knockanore Cheese farm. Here they
were given a guided tour of the cheese
house. All seven stages in making the
cheese were explained by Eamonn
Lonergan. This is a fantastic
opportunity for the children.
Oisín our “World Champion”
The World Transplant Games took place
in Gothenburg, Sweden the week
commencing on Friday, 17th June. All of
the athletes taking part have received
major organ transplants including heart,
lung, liver, kidney and pancreas.
The youngest member of the 33 strong
Irish team is our own pupil, Oisín
O’Gorman, aged just 9, who required a
kidney transplant in 2009 after falling
off his bike.
Apart from taking part in the Badminton
singles in his age group 9-11 years, Oisin
will also take part in 100m race, Ball
Throw, Tenpin Bowling singles events.
The latest news is that Oisín won 3 gold
medals and a silver.
Congratulations!

Fifth Class Talent Show
Mr.Leahy’s Fifth Class organised a Talent Show on Friday June
17th. They performed for all the classes and also a special
performance for their parents. It was an excellent show,
displaying the diverse talents among the group of students.
Music varied from traditional, pop to rap. There was dancing and
singing, with some very memorable performances. Michael
Jackson even paid us a visit! All the pupils took part and those
who did not want to perform acted as stage managers or M.C.
Well done Fifth Class.
Parents council
The Parents’ Council would like to
thank all the parents and families who
have supported and contributed to the
various fund raising events held
throughout the year.
Members of the council have been
active in managing and organising the
Equipment Fund {weekly collection or
once off contribution), the Sponsored
Walk, School Calendar the Table Quiz
and Santa Sale which have all taken
place over the past school year.
Thanks to the Ballyrafter Service
Station for providing drinks and snacks
for the sponsored walk and to members
of the local business community for
their generous sponsorship of the
School Calender.
Sincere thanks, also to the Blackwater
Carriage Club who donated €500 from
the proceeds of their recent Carriage
Drive.
The total amount raised through these
events was €15500 and will continue to
be used for the benefit of all the pupils.
This year, for example, the fund has
been used to pay for resource materials,
work on the computer room, transport
costs and special events such as the Red
Kettle theatre company and towards
providing interactive boards and
internet facilities for new classrooms.
In the coming year more events will be
arranged and the members of the
parents council welcome your
continuing support and generosity.
The Parents Council would like to thank
outgoing members Joan Houlihan and
Brian Foley for their valuable
contribution.
We wish all Parents and pupils of
Bunscoil Bhóthar na Naomh a safe and
happy summer break.

Sports Day
The eagerly awaited “Sports Day” was held on Monday 13th of June. We were very lucky to get a
dry day to host it. The field was organised by Eddie with specific sections for each activity. We
all had great fun with relay races, piggy-back races, egg and spoon race, dribbling and walk the
plank. The children thoroughly enjoyed the challenging obstacle course and fill the pipe race. The
grass volley ball course was very popular. We all had great fun and the children helped to clear
the field at the end of the day. It is great to see such co-operation and gratitude among our
student population.

We were blessed with fine
weather and the younger
members of the school
thoroughly enjoyed their
matches down in the field.
Players got better with each
game, and it was great to see
so many players getting
involved and improving every
day. In the end, teams A and
D made it to the final. On the
day, team A were fantastic,
and there was nothing team
D could do to stop them.
Thanks to all the girls who
took part, and to Margaret
Tobin and Kate Houlihan of
6th class, who took on the job
of referee for some of the
games.
Schools Championship
An initial loss against Cappoquin put us into a western semi-final against Scoil Garbhán, which we overcame. The western final saw us once again against our neighbours from Cappoquin, and on this occasion, the girls were ready to give it everything. Our squad tried very hard, and were only 1-1 to 1-0 behind at half-time. Cappoquin however, pulled away in the second half, and unfortunately we came out second best in a fine game of camogie. Everyone was disappointed naturally, especially Kate who
couldn’t play due to injury, but the girls were gracious in defeat. A fine display. Panel-Maud Farrow, Orlagh Cottier, Kate Houlihan, Rebecca Sheehan, Ellen McCloskey, Olivia Foley, Emma Power, Hannah
Glavin, Emily Prendergast, Rebecca McGlone, Kayleigh Conway, Eimear Montayne, Jane Barry, Margaret Tobin, Ailbhe Roche, Niamh Aldred, Emily Devine, Lucy McCarthy.
Thank You
We were never short of cars this year, and I’m sure the
girls were glad of the support and encouragement they
received on their various outings, home or away. Also to
Eddie Nugent for having our home venues in top order
when we had teams visiting.
Further Honours
Emily Prendergast and Emma Power did well to
get selected on the Primary Schools camogie
development squad. Eimear Montayne got a taste
of Semple Stadium when playing on the Primary
Go Game camogie team against Limerick. Emma
Power played Primary Go Game football against
Cork.

“The Big Move”
On June 15, we made our big move to the new
school and the classroom was a lot bigger than
the old one. When we were in, I was excited to
pick who I would sit beside. The interactive
board is new and the desks are blue. The hall is
long and there is a shortcut to get out faster.
The floor is green and the wall is blue. The
skylight is so cool. We keep our gear bags in the
cupboard. The coat hangers are outside the
classroom. That day was the best day of my life!

BOYS PRIMARY SCHOOLS
SPORT
As another school year draws to a close we reflect on the sporting achievements of the past year 2010/2011. As
always preparation for the various games and competitions was of the highest quality. This consisted of wall ball,
Friday morning training sessions, multiple challenge games and of course our own lunch time league competition.
This year we reached the final stages in all competitions but unfortunately failed to claim any titles. Even though we
didn’t win any trophy we still thoroughly enjoyed the year.
The panel for this year was 1.Oisin O Gorman, 2. Mark Roche, 3.Jeff Howard, 4.Iarlaith Daly, 5.David Smith,
6.Sam Ryan, 7. Evan Mc Garry, 8.Shane Coughlan, 9.Damien Prendergast, 10. Evan Roche, 11.Finbar Reaney,
12.Brian Meagher, 13. Alex O Shea, 14.Robert Troy, 15.Paddy Foley, 16.JJ O Donnell, 17.Ryan O Keeffe, 18.Rory
Heffernan, 19.David Meagher, 20.Niall Reilly, 21.Kyle Bennett, 22.Mathew Setterfield, 23.Robert Crowley,
24.Elliot Coolbear. We would all like to say a huge thank you to Mr. Prendergast and Mr. Smith for their help
throughout the year.
Congratulations to Sam Ryan and Emma Power(football), Finbar Reaney and Eimear Montayne(Hurling/camogie)
who were selected to play in the primary game this year.

“School”
When we arrived at school, a railing had been erected. Our grass area was dug up. We asked our teacher what
was going on and he said “We are building new classrooms”. Every day from that time on there was something
new. One day someone asked teacher “When will we be moving in?” He replied “March”. We all got excited.
March came and went but still we were not in our new rooms. When we were getting ready for our talent show
last week, we decided to put our tables away. Luckily, our new classroom was ready. We moved in on the
fifteenth of June. The corridor is purple. Our classroom is blue with an orange floor. The room beside us is all
yellow. You would need sunglasses! The corridor leads back into the old building. It is very nice. There is a
basketball court and a tennis court beside the new classrooms.
Mary O’Brien
Fifth Class.
Our New Classrooms
Recently we moved into our new classrooms. After a long wait, we finally shed away the old and embrace the
new. Everything is slick and updated and I think everyone would agree with me when I say we are thrilled to
bits with these new facilities. Each room is generous in size, bright and inviting. I find myself more eager to
learn, more willing to try and most importantly, more attentive in these crisp new buildings. They are sturdy,
yet manage to be elegant and graceful at the same time. They blend in with our more dated half of the school
with class and style. Strong colours grab even the most uninterested of student’s attention, and the larger areas
give us more space to grow and develop in our knowledge. I am quite certain the teachers are also gripped
with wonder and awe at how beautiful and efficient these schoolrooms are, and I’m sure, that those who have
moved, have taken to them like a duck takes to water. Though we are sorry to say goodbye to our old rooms
and past, I know we all delight in looking towards the future.

“The Great School”
I love the school
Because it’s so cool,
It is big and clean,
Our room is blue and green.
It is great
Because we are near the gate,
The cupboards are white,
It’s so bright.
Chloe Landers
Third Class.
“Our New Classroom”
We walk to our new classroom,
Hurrying each step.
Moving books and bags and chairs
And every single desk.
We see the walls,
We see the floor,
We see the cupboards,
And much more.
Everyone helps to move things,
We get it done in time,
We have been in our new classroom a
week,
And we are settling in just fine!
Ríbh Ardern
Fourth Class.
“Our New School”
New brick, colourful walls,
Exciting move across the new yard,
Waiting patiently for all our stuff!
Cool, long corridors,
Lining up our desks, neatly into place.
Along the hall, turn left, here we are,
Slowly talking, madly excited,
So easy to push the tables because the
floor is new.
Room for everyone, white gleaming
cupboards,
Offering help to teacher
Over the chairs, nearly finished,
“Moving over here is fun” says
everyone
So teacher agrees.
Olivia Lennox
Fifth Class.
“The Move of the Year” On the 15
th of June
We moved classroom.
The toilet seats are red,
Like the jam on my bread.
The windows are clean
And the floor is green.
We are in a classroom, not a
fort,
But we have a great view of the
basketball court.
But the thing is we only have a
few days,
Before we go our separate ways
On our summer holidays.
Patrick Foley
Fifth Class.
“The New Classroom”
Although the old school wasn’t
really bad,
When I had to leave it I wasn’t
sad.
The walls are blue and the floor is
green,
It’s the most colourful thing I’ve
ever seen.
There is more cupboard space
than my entire house,
It was a dirty building site but
now not even a mouse.
The walls in the classroom are
really bright,
And with all of these windows
there is plenty of light.
The desks are new and shiny and
the cupboards are clean,
And there are more classrooms
than there has ever been.
The sixth class have only two days
left here,
But I can’t wait to return next
year.
Lisa Ryan
Fifth Class.
A New Start
A feeling of Joy wells
up in my throat.
Never before
have I seen such a new
place.
Everyone looks on in
awe.
What has been built
just for them.
Sitting in our new
places we look all
around.
Teacher is also
surprised to see the
walls glimmer and
shine.
A room made for us to
learn each day.
Rich in knowledge and
style.
Tomorrow’s future
begins here today.
The end
By Cillian Meghen
IN AT LAST
We’re in at last,
Hip, hip, hurrah!
We’ve waited so long
For the moving day
There was packing and sorting to be
done,
But goodness me wasn’t it fun!
We couldn’t wait for the moving day,
But all that waiting really paid!
It’s twenty times bigger than the old
classroom,
It’s a lot cleaner and tidier too,
The floor is yellow and the walls are
blue,
And everything looks shiny and new!
Outside the walls are purple
And the floor is turquoise,
I don’t know about the others,
But I bet they’re nice!
So that’s the story
On the 15th
June,
When we moved into
Our new classroom!
