One of the many things I love about North Dakota is how quickly the landscape can change. My sister, who lives north of Seattle, WA, has a green lawn all year long. Here we have seasons of green, then brown, then white, then green again. After a long winter, I really look forward to seeing the color green again.

In the 'seasons' of the church year, we also change the colors of the paraments on the altar to reflect the change of focus as we worship our Lord. On Sunday, May 19th we begin the season of Pentecost, a season of roughly 26 weeks that has its focus on the ministry of Christ. Christ's ministry begins with a few fishermen on the shore of the Sea of Galilee and continues to grow through the hearing of Christ's call to 'follow me'. The church has used the color green for centuries throughout the season of Pentecost to focus on the life and growth of the Christian witness.

There seems to be a lot of new interest in the color 'green' lately. The city of Mandan has implemented a study to ascertain the readiness of its citizens to embrace recycling as a lifestyle. As a society, we are being called to 'go green' Maybe this summer we could also try and 'go green with God'.

Why go green with God?

• God is involved in the ongoing creation of the universe and of our home, Earth.

• God creates and calls it good and dwells in the whole creation.

• God appoints humans to be hands-on caretakers of God's creation.

• Human life is dependent upon the health of the whole creation; we are Earth creatures.

• The Earth is under a great deal of stress due to our broken relationship with creation.

• Humans need to find a new way to live in harmony with the Earth in order for the Earth to heal and thrive.

• Caring for creation is a joy, a gift, and a responsibility. As Christians, we worship and act from a place of gratitude and vocation rather than fear or guilt.

As we contemplate our responsibilities as Christians who are called by God in the book of Genesis to be caretakers of the earth on God's behalf, let us look at our relationship with the earth as one of ongoing gratitude, wonder, and humility. Sometimes at night, I like to sit outside for awhile, and look up at the stars. In those times, this prayer comes to mind.

For the earth and the gift of good land, we give thanks, O God.

For the beauty of our winters, we give thanks, O God.

For the anticipation of a new growing season, we give thanks, O God.For those who work the land and those who bring us food; for the abundance of food and

the opportunities to share, we give thanks, O God.

Give us grace to be patient in suffering and sensitive to the pain of others. Help us be caretakers of this planet earth so that we may realize your kingdom where

we are. Amen. Until next time, Pastor Lee

LUTHERAN WORLD RELIEF SCHOOL KITS:

It isn’t too early to start watching for items for the school kits. Especially needed are the new

drawstring type back packs. Watch rummage sales, second hand, Dollar and Fabric/Craft

Stores. In 2011 using the old type school bag, we sent 199 kits, but in 2012 we received 59 new

style backpacks so that’s all we were able to send. A display showing the new style backpack

will be in the Narthex. We will start collecting the supplies and bags in August.

School Kit contents are:

Four 70-sheet notebooks of wide- or college-ruled paper approximately 8” X 10½”; no loose-

leaf paper

One 30-centimeter ruler, or a ruler with centimeters on one side and inches on the other

One pencil sharpener

One blunt scissors (safety scissors with embedded steel blades work well)

Five unsharpened #2 pencils with erasers; secure together with a rubber band

Five black or blue ballpoint pens (no gel ink); secure together with a rubber band

One box of 16 or 24 crayons

One 2½” eraser

One sturdy drawstring backpack-style cloth bag approximately 14” X 17” with shoulder straps

(no standard backpacks)
