Lent, 2019

As a North Dakota native, I continue to be one who is thankful to live in

a place where all the seasons of the year can be experienced. Having said that,

this year I am feeling that winter has been celebrated long enough...I am anxious

to put away the stuff of winter and hear the sounds of water gushing into the

storm drains again. I look forward to the green of new grass and the smell of soft

earth.

As I speak of the seasons of nature, I lift up for you the church season of

Lent which will arrive on Wednesday, March 6th with the observance of Ash

Wednesday. We will then enter the season of 40 days, not including Sundays,

leading up to the celebration of Christ’s resurrection on Easter Sunday, April

21st. During the season of Lent, we will add an additional 12:00 P.M. mid-week

worship service on Wednesdays in addition to our regular mid-week service at

6:00 P.M. This year we will not have a soup and sandwich time before the noon

service as attendance for the meal was so low...never more than 17. Reminder:

There will not be a 12:00 P.M. service on Ash Wednesday.

This year Pastor Christina and myself will again be participating in a

‘round-robin’ pulpit exchange with other ELCA pastors in the Bismarck-Mandan

area. The theme for our Lenten services this year is a rather intriguing one…

“God’s Relentlessness.”

The schedule, pastor and theme are as follows:

Wednesday, March 13th, 12:00 P.M. & 6:00 P.M. Rev. Jon Splichal Larson

from Faith Lutheran in Bismarck here. Theme: “God’s Relentless

Faithfulness”.

Wednesday, March 20th, 12:00 P.M. & 6:00 P.M. Rev. Gary Erdmann from

Trinity Lutheran in Bismarck here. Theme: “God’s Relentless Relentlessness”.

Wednesday, March 27th, 12:00 P.M. & 6:00 P.M. Rev. Lee Herberg Theme:

“God’s Relentless Love”.

Wednesday, April 3rd, 1200 P.M. & 6:00 P.M. Rev. Renee Splichal Larson from

Heart River Lutheran in Mandan here. Theme: “God’s Relentless

Forgiveness”.

Wednesday, April 10th, 12:00 P.M. & 6:00 P.M. Deacon Alexandra Benson from

Heart River Lutheran in Mandan here. Theme: “God’s Relentless Calling”.

Pastor Christina and myself will be guest pastors at the same churches

listed above for their mid-week Lenten services.

I encourage all of you to make this coming Lent a season of reflection,

renewal and growth in your faith walk as we journey towards Easter in

thankfulness of God’s blessings to us, no matter what the season.

Mentor Squad, formerly Big Brothers Big Sisters, is in need of mentors!

Our mission is to improve the lives of children in

Bismarck-Mandan through mentoring.

Bis-Man Mentor Squad provides children facing adversity with strong and enduring one-to-

one relationships that change their lives for the better—forever.

We work with parents and children, community volunteers, schools and other community

members to develop and support mentoring matches.

Mentoring changes lives.

Research shows that at-risk young adults who have mentors are:

*Less likely to skip school and more likely to enroll in college.

*Less likely to start using drugs and alcohol.

*More likely to hold leadership positions.

Join Mentor Squad!

How can Mentor Squad make a difference in your life? Contact us today to enroll your

child or to become a volunteer mentor.

Easter Garden

Easter is right around the corner. As we prepare to

celebrate the resurrection of our Lord Jesus, it is

also a wonderful time to beautify our church and

honor our loved ones. The youth of our church are

selling Easter Garden Flowers. They will purchase a

mix of Lilies and Mums to decorate the Sanctuary

for Easter. Flowers may be picked up after the 11:00

A.M. Easter service. Order forms will be available in

the narthex starting March 2nd. Orders can be

placed in the offering plate or the church office. The

price for each plant is $13.00. Orders must be

placed by Sunday, March 24th. (We can’t place

late orders!)

Any youth who are planning on

attending Bible Camp this sum-

mer and want to raise some mon-

ey, please let Pastor Chris know

by Sunday, March 24th.
