Her advice to others was, “Don’t do it.” The season of Lent can be hectic with extra service and routines when learning a new system of being church. One must also add to her experience being 7 months pregnant. It is been a great start so far besides, beginning during Lent and adding to it confirmation, first communion, everything new, and Virgil taking vacation. So far so good. Now I must say when I say those words, “so far so good”, one of my daughters laughs because it was the punch line to a joke in a movie. The joke started with someone jumping off the 5 th floor of a building and on the way down someone asked how it was going and he said, “so far so good.” But seriously, Lent is a great time to start. This Lenten season I have tried to focus on some practical advice of things people can do to grow their faith and improve relationships with one another, because that is some of the focus of Lent and the Lenten disciplines. The three holy days, Good Friday through Easter is the central story of our faith and each year we engage in the story in a very meaningful way. How can it get any better than this! Forgiveness of sins, defeat of the death and the devil, and as Romans 8 puts it so eloquently, nothing can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. Some might say that it is a tough time being church in this era. The numbers are down, we all know a lot of people who say they are Christian, but do not attend worship. We really cannot worry about that. We can only consider out response to the good news of the gospel. I love the shorter and more original ending to the gospel of Mark because the gospel ends, “So they went out and fled from the tomb, for terror and amazement had seized them; and they said nothing to anyone, for they were afraid.” I love this ending because we know it is not the end of the story. They had to tell someone even in their fear because we are here today. For most people telling the story of Jesus can be a frightening experience. So we rely on those who teach Sunday school, or pastors, or professionals, to tell the story of Jesus. But the fact is that these first women who went to the tomb in Mark were none of these things. It was normal people who spread the good news and advanced the coming of the kingdom of God. The three days is great, because it gives us a story so compelling that it becomes hard not to share the good news. I had a colleague in the central conference who started her new call during the season of Lent. The joke started with someone jumping off the 5th floor of a building and on the way down someone asked how it was going and he said, “so far so good.” But seriously, Lent is a great time to start. Ruth Ann’s Ramblings …(contributed by Ruth Ann Hoehn)

O Sacred Head, Now Wounded

The hymn “O Sacred Head, Now Wounded” is based on a Latin poem written during the Middle Ages, with stan-zas addressing the various parts of Christ's body hanging on the Cross. The last part of the poem, from which

the hymn is taken, is addressed to Christ's head. The poem is attributed to Bernard of Clairvaux (1091-1153).

The poem was translated into German by the Lutheran hymnist Paul Gerhardt (1607–1676). It first appeared in Johann Crüger's hymnal Praxis pietatis melica in 1656. Although Gerhardt translated the whole poem, it is the

closing section which has become best known, and is sung as a hymn in its own right.

The hymn was first translated into English in 1752 by John Gambold, an Anglican vicar. A new translation of the hymn was made by an American Presbyterian minister, James Waddel Alexander in 1830. Alexander's translation became one of the most widely used in 19th and 20th century hymnals. The music for the German

and English versions of the hymn is by Hans Leo Hassler, written around 1600 for a secular love song.

Paul Gerhardt is commemorated on October 26 along with Philipp Nicolai and Johann Heermann. These great hymn writers all worked in seventeenth-century Germany in times of war and plague. Nicolai, a pastor, lost 1,300 parishioners to plague, 170 in one week. He wrote "O Morning Star, How Fair and Bright" and "Wake,

Awake, for Night is Flying." Heermann's hymns include "Ah, Holy Jesus."

Paul Gerhardt (March 12, 1607 – May 27, 1676) was born into a middle-class family in a small town near Wit-tenberg. At the age of fifteen, he entered the Fürstenschule in Grimma, a school known for its pious atmosphere and stern discipline. Gerhardt graduated in 1627. In January 1628 he enrolled in the University of Wittenberg. There, two teachers in particular had an influence on him: Paul Röber and Jacob Martini. Both of these men pro-

moted Lutheran teachings not only in the classroom, but also in sermons and hymns.

Gerhardt graduated from the University of Wittenberg around 1642. Due to the troubles of the Thirty Years War he was not immediately placed as a pastor. He moved to Berlin where he worked as tutor. During his time in Berlin his hymns and poems brought him to the attention of Johann Crüger the cantor and organist at the Ni-colaikirche in Berlin. Crüger was impressed by Gerhardt's hymns and included many of them in his hymnal. The hymns proved popular, and Gerhardt and Crüger began a collaboration and friendship that continued for many

years.

Gerhardt received his first appointment as the new Probst at Mittenwalde in 1651. During his time in Mitten-walde he composed most of his hymns. Also during this time in Mittenwalde he married Anna Maria Barthold. In 1657 he was called to be an Associate Pastor to the Nikolaikirche of Berlin. When Gerhardt came to Berlin he found a city full of strife between the Lutheran and Reformed clergy. The Elector at the time was Friedrich Wil-helm I of Brandenburg, who was Reformed. He placed only Reformed pastors into parishes, removed the Lu-theran professors from the University of Frankfurt, and forbade students from his lands to study at the University of Wittenberg. He sponsored a series of conferences between the Lutheran and Reformed clergy in the hopes of having them arrive at some consensus, but the result was the opposite. Gerhardt was a leading voice among the Lutheran clergy, and drew up many of the statements in defense of the Lutheran faith. His sermons and de-votional writings were so free from controversy that many Reformed attended his services, and the wife of the

Elector, Louisa Henrietta, was a great admirer of him.

When the conferences failed to bring the desired consensus, the Elector published his "syncretistic" edict that disallowed the Formula of Concord, one of the Lutheran Confessions contained in the Book of Concord. Ger-hardt was removed from his position in 1666. For over a year he lived in Berlin without fixed employment. During this time his wife died. In October 1668 he was called as archdeacon of Lübben. He was in this position for

eight years before his death on May 27, 1676.

Leadership Lab 2017

Last year, Nick and Mandy Rex came to speak to our congregation regarding

Leadership Lab. The mission of Leadership Lab is, "To be an active LABORATORY, practicing church leadership for the future...". Leadership Lab is for students whom have completed 8th grade through adults wishing to attend. This year, camp will be held July 24-29 at Augustana College. First Lutheran will cover the cost of the tuition for those who wish to attend. The early bird cost is $360 and the deadline is May 10. The Education Committee feels this is such an important opportunity for our youth. Please talk to Renee Mahoney, Kathy Benoit, Steve Benoit, Virgil Hyte, Donielle Anderson or Pastor Black for more information and to register. You can also view information at their website as it becomes updated: http://leadershiplab.net/

Carol Stubbs Update: Carol arrived at Froedert Hospital in Milwaukee, WI on Feb 20th for care & treatment! Doctors and staff performed numerous tests. The good news was that the treatments Carol had received in the past 2 months have kept the cancer from getting worse. Unfortunately, it IS Plasma Cell Leukemia, the worst and most aggressive form of leukemia to get, and it is still strong. Carol chose to pursue very aggressive treatment, which is her only hope for remission. She also has significant damage to her spine and pelvis from the cancer. She had her first round: five types of chemo given continuously for 96 hours, along with steroids and other meds. They have also started working to ‘repair’ the bone in her pelvis affected by the cancer. The chemo has begun to work, but of course – it is still a long battle ahead with many more intensive treatments. She is currently out of the hospital until her next chemo begins.
