The program has opened my eyes in so many ways, and now I can pass on what I have learned to my children as well having teachings in the community so that we can work together to protect what Mother Earth has given to us. The staff were amazing and caring people and were always there for you.

What gives me satisfaction? To witness the growth and pride in our students as they progress through our program. We provide the tools so our students can empower themselves.

A SUPPORTIVE AND FLEXIBLE APPROACH TO LEARNING PRIOR LEARNING ASSESSMENT & RECOGNITION (PLAR)

PLAR is a systemic process to identify, document, assess and recognize the abilities and knowledge a learner has developed throughout life through both formal and informal learning experiences. A portfolio is created by the student, demonstrating his or her knowledge in relation to specific learning and career goals.

This process provides alternative pathways to formal credits in academic or professional training programs. PLAR is also used by FNTI in the classroom as a learning and evaluation process.

Since 1985, FNTI has pioneered a unique approach to post-secondary education. Flexible schedules and locations allow FNTI students to study close to home, and continue working, while increasing their professional skills and marketability.

BRINGING THE CLASSROOM TO THE STUDENTSFNTI has delivered programs all over Ontario — in First Nations, in large and mid-sized urban centres, and in smaller communities.

CONDENSED CLASS SCHEDULESFNTI works with our post-secondary partners to develop a condensed class schedule for post-secondary programs. Class sessions usually take place over a one-week period (5 days) every month, or every other month, during the academic year.

STUDENT SUPPORTAt FNTI, we provide academic and personal support to all students, to help ensure success. Most programs have counsellors and tutor-mentors in place to help students on their learning journey. In many cases, an Elder is associated with the program and is often on-site during the entire course.

ADMISSION SUPPORT FOR MATURE STUDENTSMature student guidelines may allow admission to applicants who do not have an OSSD and who have been away from formal education for a certain period of time. Criteria for admitting mature students varies somewhat depending on the program and partner institution. Certain high school credits or academic testing may be required. FNTI offers adult education programs for learners who require specific credits or wish to upgrade. Please contact us for details!

FINANCIAL SUPPORTTuition fees, travel and accommodation costs may be accessed through several sources, such as:

• Post-secondary funds through the Education Office of the student’s home territory or First Nation • Friendship Centres • Local Area Management Boards • Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP) • Scholarships, bursaries and grants

We can provide guidance to find the funding option right for you! STUDENT BURSARIESStudent bursary funding is available to learners who demonstrate financial need and a strong commitment to their program. Contact us!

A Personal Support Worker (PSW) is a valuable member of the modern health care team and in high demand in today’s job market. In just a few short months you can acquire the knowledge, skills and hands-on training to begin a career in this challenging field. If you enjoy seeing people increase their independence, self-esteem, dignity and social interaction, consider this worthwhile vocation.

This one-year certificate program trains students to offer personal care and home management services to clients in community or institutional settings. Personal support workers provide services to clients with physical, cognitive, emotional and behavioral challenges and work under a regulated health professional or in a supported independent living environment. Students learn through in-class instruction, hands-on labs and community placements. Graduates are awarded a Personal Support Worker Certificate from Canadore College.

Become an Indigenous Community Diabetes Support (ICDS) Worker and make a difference in diabetes prevention. Learn Indigenous concepts and traditional holistic teachings to deepen your cultural knowledge and health care practice. According to Health Canada, Type 2 Diabetes is a serious health concern for Canada’s First Nations. The ICDS worker functions within a community health care team by facilitating access to services, advocacy, health promotion, and self-management support for individuals, families and community members. Be the difference for people at risk for developing or living with diabetes.

Graduates receive an Indigenous Community Diabetes Support Certificate from Canadore College and find employment in a variety of community practice settings, including but not limited to: family health teams, health authorities, tribal councils, treaty organizations and Indigenous communities. All learners welcome!

The Professional Master of Public Administration (PMPA) program is designed for experienced senior administrators and executives in First Nations and other Indigenous agencies. Students acquire policy development and analysis skills, and build management capacity in ways that help them translate policy into action. This unique program helps leaders integrate traditional knowledge and philosophies into Indigenous policy and governance, and build capacity with Indigenous communities.

The PMPA curriculum includes core courses in economics, policy analysis, governance, management and quantitative methods. Through elective courses and an optional master’s project, students apply their skills to the analysis and resolution of concrete policy and management problems. The PMPA offers a rich and rewarding learning experience, with faculty who are leading scholars and prominent policy leaders, among accomplished and ambitious student colleagues who are committed to making a significant difference in their workplace and their community for the benefit of others. This program is delivered in partnership with Queen’s University.

It’s one of the strongest bachelor level human service degrees you can get. A Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) degree is of great value in today’s competitive job market and will equip you for a challenging career in the field of social work. It is often one of the only bachelor level degrees that require an internship or field placement – giving you the practical experience necessary to kick-start your career. Delivered in partnership with Ryerson University, the BSW program prepares you for a wide range of careers in the field of social work: family services agencies, children’s aid agencies, general and psychiatric hospitals, school boards, correctional institutions, welfare administration agencies, federal and provincial departments or private practice. The curriculum covers social work research and practice, and includes relevant training in the field with opportunities to explore areas of special interest through electives and professionally-related courses. This unique program develops social workers who empower self-determination, cultural preservation and holistic healing in Indigenous communities.

Students explore and further their own holistic growth and learn from work in cultural camps, in classes, with Elders, and in the field. Academic knowledge is balanced with experiential learning and the need to practice on the basis of Indigenous world views. This program is delivered in partnership with Wilfred Laurier University.

OHAHASE (NEW ROAD) EDUCATION CENTRE

The Ohahase Education Centre offers three programs that help learners earn their Ontario secondary school credits and/or diploma:

GRADE 9-11

Our day school is designed for high school-aged students (14-18). Students take up to four courses in each of two semesters, over an academic year. Students of all abilities are encouraged to apply.

ADULT EDUCATION PROGRAM

Our adult education program attracts adults and youth who want to work at their own pace to earn specific credits or an Ontario Secondary School Diploma. FNTI staff members are available to provide assistance when required. The length of the program varies for each student, depending on his or her goals.

TYENDINAGA YOUTH PROGRAM

This program offers in-class learning and field placement work for youth between the ages of 16 - 30 who experience barriers to employment. Participants may also earn high school credits through this program.

The Tontakaiêrine (It has become right again) Tyendinaga Justice Circle is an alternative for youth involved with the justice system. The program brings together victims, offenders, and families or advocates, in a safe environment to discuss the offence and its effects, and jointly decide on the best way to right the wrong. This Indigenous conflict resolution process validates victims, offenders, families, and advocates, and creates healing. The program receives referrals from police, crown attorneys, local schools, and community agencies. We are expanding Tontakaiêrine to offer more culturally-relevant mentorship, youth events, ongoing support for families, and training to professionals in the youth services field.

At FNTI, we are happy to assist you with your application and/or enquiries.

We can:

• Help you determine if you meet admission criteria and discuss ways to fill in any gaps

• Discuss funding sources and provide the documentation you need to apply for funding
