This move continues thedeployment of the SAI Globalstrategy to deliver high qualityinspection and certification tothe food industry around theworld from an ever expandingnumber of in-country bases, ensuring local language deliveryof key products in developingmarkets. This includes BRC, IFS,ISO9001, ISO22000, ISO14001and GlobalGap certifications, aswell as second party inspectionsand training for the food industry.

Paul Ruocco, Marketing &New Market DevelopmentDirector said, “This is a majordevelopment for SAI Global aswe had identified Poland as amajor area of growth for foodcertifications in the comingyears. I am delighted thatMiroslaw will be heading up theoperation, as he has a wealth ofexperience and understandsthe requirements of the Polishfood industry very well. I amsure he will build an excellent

Following the success of thirdparty audits throughout the

UK, Europe and Australia, globalfood standards are now beingadopted in the USA and Canada. This is a huge potential marketthat has until recently reliedupon company specific hygieneinspections rather than morecomprehensive third party audits.

The catalyst to this has beenthe announcement by Wal-Martlate last year, of their require-ments for their suppliers to theWal-Mart and Sams Club privatelabel brands to have an audit toGFSI standards. This follows themodel that ASDA – part of theWal-Mart family has had in placefor many years and has beenapplied to the Wal-Mart globalprocurement suppliers into theUS for some time.

In the US suppliers of ownbrand products and also produce, meat, fish poultry andready to eat foods are requiredto have their factories certified toany of the GFSI benchmarkedstandards ie SQF, BRC,IFS &Dutch HACCP. Initial certificationis due between July-December2008 with full certificationrequired by July 2009 byapproved third party audit companies such as SAI Global.

Since that time several otherretailers and manufacturers havealso reviewed their supplier auditrequirements and adopted GFSI

standards too. In particularWegmans, and Kroger, Loblawsand HEB are all in the processof moving in this direction.

This has created a huge

amount of activity in the Americaswhich SAI Global is well placedto service through its acquisitionof QMI earlier this year.

QMI is based in the USA andCanada and has a team of morethan 400 professionals and holdsa wide range of accreditationsmeaning that we are well placedto take advantage of the newopportunities in the growing foodsafety market in North America.

Carole Payne, Food Director,is working closely with the teamat QMI-SAI, lead by Paul ValderExecutive President Agri-Food

Americas. To date QMI-SAI havehosted a series of events on theGFSI standards, including BRCroadshows, webinars andexhibiting at SQF conferences

and are working closely with allthe standard owners to ensurethere is full understanding ofretailers’ requirements. There ishuge demand for training andawareness of the requirementsof the standards and of HACCP.Also many clients are preparingby requesting gap audits or pre-assessments to assess theirreadiness. Likewise QMI-SAI arein the process of training andapproving their team of auditorsin accordance with the usualhigh SAI Global/EFSIS operatingprocedures.

Early this year, SAIGlobal/EFSIS ran a highly

successful series of conferencesand training courses around theUK, Ireland, and in local lan-guages in all our food officesthroughout the world. The mainfocus of the conferences was onexplaining the changes to thenew BRC Global Food StandardVersion 5 to food manufacturers, producers and retailers.

The conferences were attend-ed by over 800 delegates, andgave an in-depth understandingof the changes between the pre-vious Standard and the newVersion 5. With the new version

implemented from July 1st, theconferences have allowed thefood industry to prepare for thechanges and be ready whenevertheir next certification audit is due.

The conference agendafocused around the mainamendments to the standard:• Greater explanation and

definition of HACCP.• Expanded section on issues

of major importance, such asAllergens and Site Security.

• Expansion and revision of requirements for improvedclarity.

• A more rigorous grading system with reduction in the

number of non conformancesto achieve B or C Grades.

• Revision of product categoriesthat focus on technology offood production to align withrequirements for auditors. Steve Clowes from Randall

Parker Foods, (who are currentlycertified to the BRC Global foodstandard by SAI Global/EFSIS)was impressed by the confer-ence. He commented: “Theconference overall was verymuch focused on the specificelements of the revised standard, which was extremely informativeand detailed.”

“We were also given time forquestions after each section ofthe conference which allowed usto ask specific questions relevantto the topic area that had justbeen covered.” Experiencedauditors and members of SAIGlobal/EFSIS’ certification teamwere available to answer company specific questionsthroughout the day.

Questions asked at the conference were mainly focusedaround the more rigorous gradingsystem. Emma West, SAI Global/EFSIS’ Company Technical

Manager explained, “A more rigorous grading scheme forgrades B, C and D has beenintroduced with a revisit by thecertification body required within28 days to verify correctiveaction for grade C.

Every attendee was givenhandouts highlighting the differences between version 4and 5 of the standard. “The documents that were given totake away with us were veryconcise and will be extremelyuseful when implementing thedifferences in Version 5 of thestandard. The day was an overallsuccess” says Steve Clowes.

To help with the implementa-tion of the new version, SAIGlobal/EFSIS has been conducting Gap Audits that helpsites identify significant issuesthat need to be addressed inorder for them to fully meet therequirements of the new standard. The Gap Audits takeplace on site, covering allaspects of the standard. Non-compliances are left with the siteso they can implement their ownplan of action and prepare fortheir first audit.

SAI Global/EFSIS has been at the forefront of the

development of the Standard as it has had its own accreditedStorage & Distribution Standardfor a number of years, which iswell established within theindustry.

In April, SAI Global/EFSISannounced that it is one of thefirst Certification Bodies to beaccredited to undertake auditsand certification to the BRCGlobal Standard for Storage andDistribution.

“The EFSIS Storage andDistribution standard has been ahuge success,” says SAI Global/EFSIS Food Director CarolePayne. “That means we have agreat deal of expertise in Storageand Distribution. We alreadyhave expert auditors in placeand a wealth of experience inthe sector, which means that SAIGlobal/EFSIS is the best choicefor any company wanting towork to the new standard, whether they have been auditedagainst the EFSIS standardalready or they have decided totake up the new BRC standardfrom scratch.”

The BRC Global Standard forStorage and Distribution is riskbased with a strong emphasison Hazard and Risk Analysis toidentify and manage potentialproduct safety risks, coupledwith documented quality management systems. This issupplemented with particularbest practice requirements formanaging the operation, theconditions of any storage siteand site personnel.

The Standard comprises offour modules, allowing clients toselect the most appropriatemodule(s) to suit the needs oftheir business and client base.• Storage Module• Distribution Module• Wholesale Module (can only

be selected in conjunction with the storage module)

• Contracted Services Module (can only be selected in conjunction with the storage module)The contracted services mod-

ule gives companies who offeradditional services an opportunityto demonstrate a high level ofcommitment to their clients and

a high level of control over theservices provided. The followingactivities can be covered by thecontracted services module:• Product Inspection/Sorting, • Contract Packing (Repacking,

Assembly Packing),• Quantity Control Inspection, • Contract • Chilling/Freezing/Defrost • Operations

The standard has a widescope and does not just includefood products, packaging materials and consumer productscan also be included within thescope of certification.

The BRC have recently published a supplement docu-ment which works in conjunctionwith the Standard. The supple-ment seeks to provide additionalinformation and clarificationregarding the application of thestandard. The supplement isavailable free of charge from SAI Global/EFSIS or can be downloaded from the BRCGlobal Standards website.

BRC Global Standard Foodaligns with the Storageand Distribution Standard

The Storage and Transportsection of the BRC Global

Standard for Food Safety makesdirect reference to the BRCGlobal Standard for Storage andDistribution. Therefore, if yourstorage and distribution contrac-tors are having an audit againstthe BRC Storage and DistributionStandard this will not onlyensure that they are working to similar standards to sitesmanufacturing products, but will also assist in helping youmeet the requirements of clause4.12.6 of the Global Standard for Food Safety.

Over the past few months SAI Global/EFSIS has seen an exciting increase in the level ofenquiries and requests for certification against this standard.

If you require further informationabout gaining certification to thisstandard or if you are interested infinding out more about how thestandard can assist in the approvalof your service providers please e-mail: [email protected].

As there is some synergybetween the requirements of theBRC Global Standard for Storageand Distribution and ISO 9001,why not ask SAI Global/EFSISabout a combined audit andbenefit from a reduction in timeand cost in comparison withstand alone audits. In order toassist sites in understanding therequirements of the standard,SAI Global/EFSIS is running aseries of training days over thenext few months, covering thekey requirements to help companies to prepare.

For further information, contact the training team at [email protected] or call +44 (0)1908 509090.

IFS Logistics Standard

Demand for certificationagainst the IFS Logistic

standard continues to grow, withalmost 400 companies beingcertified against the standard. The requirements of the IFSLogistics standard are similar to the requirements of the BRCGlobal Standard for Storage andDistribution. Like the BRCStandard, the IFS LogisticsStandard is applicable to bothfood and non-food products, and covers all logistics activitiessuch as: transport, storage, distribution, loading/unloading,etc. It also applies to all types oflogistics: by road, ship or rail;frozen/refrigerated or ambient.SAI Global/EFSIS are happy toprovide audits to which ever standard you require.

Hot Off The Press (extended scope – IFSFood Standard)

IFS have recently announcedthat the IFS Food Standard canbe applied to Food Wholesalersand Cash and Carry Markets. This new product category 19,"Wholesale / Cash & Carry" maybe used for all types of whole-sale activities and wholesalecompanies that handleunpacked products, such as:meat, fish, vegetables and bak-ery products. Many wholesaleand cash & carry companieshave on-site operations such ascutting, slicing, dicing, weighing, measuring, filling, packing, labelling, cooking, cooling, freez-ing, thawing and storage. TheIFS Food Standard is thereforean ideal Standard to be appliedto these types of premises. Inpractice, all cash & carry mar-kets as well as many otherwholesale companies whichhandle unpacked products cannow benefit from certification tothe IFS Food Standard.

“This exciting new develop-ment provides a full range ofstandards throughout Europeand the rest of the world, whichfill this important gap in the foodchain between production andretail allowing the whole supplychain to be covered,” saysEmma West, SAI Global/EFSIS’Technical Manager – Food.

SAI Global/EFSIS leads the way on Storage and Distribution

The British Retail Consortium’snew Global Food Standard is

one of the most significant foodstandards available to food manufacturers. The basis for thestandard takes a risk basedapproach to food safety, withCodex Alimentarius HACCP as a core requirement within thefood safety management systemsassessed.

With the recent changes tothe standard, which have beenimplemented since July 2008,the requirements for HACCPhave been expanded andexplained in more detail, makingthem easier to follow.

The changes include:• Product descriptions and

background information nowneed to be included as evidence

• Identification of intended useto be included

• Construction and verificationof the flow diagram

• Suggested use of decisiontree for CCP determination

• Formal validation of criticallimits

• Specific requirements for documentation of details suchas monitoring records beingsigned and dated and correc-tive action to include handlingof unsafe productsIn addition to the points above,

there is now a requirement toreview all HACCP plans annuallyand records of the review are tobe kept.

Last year SAI Global/EFSISlaunched a 1-day HACCP trainingcourse, which has proved verypopular specifically covering the

HACCP requirements in BRCVersion 5 and taking companiesthrough common problems, including the latest tools andtechniques for HACCP teams to use.

As the standard requires the organisation to have a ‘qualified team leader’ who can demonstrate competence inHACCP, SAI Global/EFSIS haveregistered as a RIPH HACCPtraining centre in order to beable to offer a BRC HACCPtraining course which also offersthe optional RIPH Level 2HACCP exam – IntermediateCertificate in Applied HACCP as an option for those delegates who would like to have the formal qualification.

This course is run over 3 days to introduce delegates tothe most effective tools andtechniques to implement andrun an effective HACCP plan. The workshop is suitable for personnel who have no experience of HACCP, who arepreparing or considering accreditation to the BRC version5 and want to ensure their systems contain the requiredelements or those who wouldlike to improve and update theirknowledge. The course includesan optional qualification and uses practical activities and workshops for hands-on practice, run by experiencedHACCP practitioners.
