Don’t miss out… Weekly updates every

Friday morning!

Quick: name the worst Christmas present you ever received. No really, it’s OK. You don’t have to feel guilty and no one will ever know your answer besides you.

Mine? A Thigh Master. Remember those?

It was an S shaped, rubber padded gadget designed to squeeze between

your knees in order to make your thighs smaller. Let me tell you, nothing says “I wish you were different” than giving a piece of unsolicited exercise equipment. (And no, Pastor Laird was not the giver. This happened years ago in a different life.)

We all have certain desires and wishes as Christmas approaches. Usually as we mature, those wishes change from wanting specific, material gift items, to desires for emotional and spiritual connection and fulfillment. We hope to spend time with family and friends. We hope to create a happy Christmas for someone else. We hope to draw closer to Jesus. We hope this Christmas finds us and those around us free of worry, pain, illness, and despair. The reality however, is that we don’t always get what we want for Christmas.

Our December sermon series will take a look at this topic as we explore, “Socks and Underwear: Gifts that Nobody Wants, but Everybody Needs.”

For example, young Mary was not hoping to become pregnant before her marriage to Joseph. She had not been wishing that an angel would come to her with news that would rock her world and her relationships.

The Israelite people, who spent centuries hoped for a savior, envisioned a powerful king or some sort of superhero. A tiny baby in a humble manger was not on their wish list.

Yet, God’s generosity in giving the world exactly what it NEEDED, rather than what worldly people WANTED, resulted in the all-time perfect gift.

Whether your Christmas is shaping up to be exactly what you wished for, or the holiday you wish you could skip this year, come to church on Sunday. Let’s spend some time thinking about what we truly NEED this Christmas.

Meanwhile, I think I’ll see if I still have that Thigh Master.

HAVE YOU ENJOYED OUR VISUALS ON SUNDAY MORNINGS?

If you have, be sure to thank Bettie Lou Cheney, Ginger Gwartney and Har-

riet Brown. They are the three that make up our Visual Team. They have

done a wonderful job and we appreciate all of their hard work! Recently,

they sent us a letter asking to discontinuing the displays for a while. With

their permission we will share a portion of the letter we received.

“For more than ten years the Visual Team has prepared a visual interpretation

of the scripture to illustrate the passages the clergy of our church have chosen for

the messages of the Sunday morning worship service. We consider it a privilege to

have created these displays on a regular basis.

At this time, for the following reasons, we are requesting a Leave of Absence

from this work. First of all, there will be considerable remodeling of the offices and

narthex this fall and winter and it will be very difficult to continue our work.

Secondly, the members of our team have family health issues and needs of our

families that need to be addressed at this time. It is therefore our recommendation

that we take a Leave of Absence and address the future of this area of worship at a

later time.

Please join us in thanking these three women for their hard work and dedica-

tion for the last ten years. We pray for their families and their health and

hope to see their beautiful works of art in future visual displays after comple-

tion of our construction. Thank you Bettie Lou, Ginger and Harriet!

Christmas is almost here, and that means we’re in Angel Tree season!

Angel Tree matters so much to the families and children of incarcerated parents. This can only be accomplished be-cause of volunteers like you who are willing to humbly serve.

Please volunteer to adopt an Angel Tree child or children this Christmas by buying, wrapping and delivering gifts in the name of the inmate par-ent. Kelly Cockrell will be in the Narthex on December 2 and 9, 2018, to help you pick a child or children that so much need and want to be remembered this Christmas. Please deliver your wrapped presents to the church by December 12th, 3:00 PM, for the Angel Tree party and dinner on December 14, 2018, at 5:30 PM.

Angel Tree Christmas Prison Ministries

ALL children are invited to join Michelle Olson and the Wesley Sing-ers in singing on Christmas Eve.

Children may join us for practice on Wednesday, December 5th and De-cember 12th. And, remember, you don’t need to be a member of the Wesley Singers! Just come and join the group to practice singing some Christmas songs! It will be fun! We meet in room 114 at 5:45 pm, after dinner! See you there!

Christmas Eve!

REFRIGERATOR WANTED

If anyone has a, useable household

size refrigerator that they would like

to donate, we could use one in our

Hospitality room. Just give us a call

at 575-622-1881. Thank you!
