Greetings FPC Family!

Grace to you and peace from God the Father and our Lord, Jesus Christ! I hope and pray this October 2019 newsletter finds you hap-py and well. The First Presbyterian Church family of faith is very blessed by each and every one of you … please don’t ever doubt or forget that!

I’m writing this newsletter article on my one year anniversary of my time with you, and it’s been an amazing and fulfilling 12 months in-deed! While I continue to gratefully receive and appreciate your kind words of thanks and encouragement, I remain quite convinced that it is I who is most privileged and blessed to be here among you. And, I thank God each and every day for calling me to this congregation and community.

Evidence of God’s goodness, which affects me deeply, has been on display all around us in the past many weeks and months … and will continue to be. We have shared in impactful worship services, meaningful Sunday School discus-sions, productive Session and committee meetings, and definitely in a variety of fun and enjoyable fellowship moments. What wonderful kingdom moments they have been!

And, like I said, God’s goodness will continue to be on full display in the coming weeks. Indeed, the month of October will be full of kingdom moments … First, our new Director of Family Ministries, the Rev. Kimmy Briggs, begins her

ministry with FPC on October 1st! Then the first Sunday of the month, October 6th, will be World Communion Sun-

day, when we will once again joyfully share the bread and cup together, along with millions of fellow Christians around the world.

Then on Sunday, October 13th, Kimmy will fill the pulpit for the first time. Then the next week, Sunday, October 20th, will be Oxford College Sunday, which

will include both a celebration of Oxford (with the Rev. Doug Hicks preaching) and a celebration of a baptism.

Finally, over the final weekend of the month, we will celebrate both a wedding and Change the World Day on October 26th, and then the culmination of Stew-ardship with Commitment Sunday on October 27th, along with an exciting Trunk or Treat event and the beginning of another week of hosting Family Promise that afternoon.

What wonderful kingdom moments these will be!

Don’t think it will stop there either. God is busy working in and through all of us, all the time, and there will be a whole lot more kingdom moments ahead!

So get excited for the month ahead. Get excited for Kimmy’s arrival. And, get excit-ed for the future.

Until the next time I remain … just another silly preacher always on the lookout for more kingdom moments! Grace & Peace, Steven

World Communion Sunday The Lord’s Supper will be celebrated on Sunday,

October 6, at the 11:00 worship service. Prepare your heart.

Fall Break for Schools

Hello FPC Family,

We have been very busy down the halls of the Early Learning Center! Our theme for the month of October is “Boxes.” We will be exploring shapes, colors, and sizes, as well as using our imaginations to turn the boxes into amazing things! I hope you all get a chance to walk down the ELC hall and check out the amazing art-work on our bulletin boards. We have some blooming little artists!

We have several fun events coming for October. We will have our annual Halloween Costume Parade on Wednesday, October 30 at 11 a.m. Come line the sidewalks around the church to cheer for our little ones all dressed up for Halloween! Some of our children will be going on a field trip to the Square for a picnic. We are hoping to go to a pumpkin patch as well.

We cannot wait for the Trunk or Treat this year! This is our first time partner-ing with the congregation for this event, and I know everyone will enjoy each other tremendously! What a great opportunity for our church family to get to know our ELC families. I really hope you can make it on Sunday, October 27 from 4 to 6 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall.

For our fall fundraiser, we will be having a 50/50 Raffle! Tickets will be sold for $5 each through the month of October. The total amount raised will be split with 50% going to the winner and 50% going to the ELC. We are guaranteeing a minimum prize of $200, but the sky is the limit on how much the prize could be! We would love for church members to participate! See one of our Board members for tickets, contact Peni, or stop by to see me in my office one morning. Drawing will be held at Trunk or Treat, but you do not have to be present to win.

Thanks for all of your support and prayers!

God bless,

Darlene Alley

International Lunch

Welcome to the Rev. Kimmy Briggs! A warm welcome was given to Kimmy Briggs, our new Director of Family Ministries on Sunday, Septem-ber 22. She begins her position at FPC on October 1st. The International Lunch was delicious! Thanks to all who shared their recipes and told us about them!

Page 4: First Presbyterian Church First Presbyterian Church

On October 27th, we will again be hosting homeless families in our church through Family Promise. We had such great success the last time we hosted, and it touched sever-al of the congregation members who volun-teered.

On that Sunday the ELC will be having a Halloween party for their students and families. The families we host will be invited. Additionally, we plan to take the families to the Square on the Square on October 31. We plan to provide costumes for the children. Volunteer opportunities will be published soon. Mark your calendars for the evening of November 9th. Family Promise of NewRock will be holding a gala event at the Piedmont Technical College here in Newton County. There will be dinner, entertainment, and an auction to raise funds for the non-profit organization. More information will follow.

The second and third quarter dia-per and wipe distribution was made to the Food Pantry, home-less shelter and Salvation Army in June and August. This local project, sponsored by the Wit-

ness Team is well-supported by members and friends of FPC. These two deliveries totaled 1098 diapers and 33 packages of wipes. Your continued support is appreciated.

Peace Making and Reconciliation

The Peace and Global Witness Offering encourages the church of our time to cast off anxiety and fear, discord and division, and embrace our reconciling God’s mission with Those around the corner and around the world, as active peacemakers — at all times in all ways. When is the offering received? The season for this offering is September 1 to October 6 which is World Communion Sunday, but can be received at any time during the year. First Presbyterian has traditionally received it on World Communion Sunday and we will do so again on October 6th. How is my gift used? A gift to the Peace & Global Witness Offering enables the entire church to collaborate in our proclamation of Christ’s peace. Congregations keep 25% and mid councils keep 25% to engage in peacemaking and build ministries of reconcilia-tion in their own context. The other 50% goes to the Presby-terian Mission Agency.

Choir Rehearsals

Sanctuary Choir rehearsals take place on Wednes-days at 6:45pm in the choir room. Handbell Choir rehearsals take place on Sundays at 9am in the sanctuary. We would love to have anyone interested join us! If you cannot make the weekly commitment, but are interested in singing or ringing, please let Kris-ta Firkus know as the need for soloists and alternates often arises.

Welcome to Our Newest Member

First Presbyterian Church Covington welcomes Dr. Tom Crews to our congregation. Tom served our country in the United States Army from 1958-1960 and was stationed at Fort McPherson and in South Korea. As a physician, he worked in the areas of general practice, internal medicine, and cardiology, from 1960-1999, before retirement. Thanks to Ed Crudup, a longtime friend, for inviting Tom to church! Tom enjoys the friendliness and welcoming atmos-phere First Presbyterian Church Covington has to offer. He looks forward to becoming better acquainted with our members and becoming more involved in our church’s activities.
