The Ron Hake Collection of Devon Postal History

Ronald Hake FSPH

1928–2008

Ron was a Devon boy, born the youngest of four children in Cullompton in 1928. His country upbringing was

enlivened by receiving the gift of a stamp album when he was ten, and his first notable financial investment in

the hobby was the purchase in May 1940 of the first day cover commemorating the Centenary of the Penny

Black.

Collecting waste paper for the war effort resulted in early discoveries and later, whilst he was on leave from

National Service, the task of clearing an old solicitor's office in his home town proved an inspiration for the

postal history path that Ron was to follow. In return for his stamp album, given to the current solicitor in

exchange, Ron worked carefully through stacks of eighteenth and nineteenth century documents. His parents

were not impressed by the the state of his bedroom at this time.

Ron began to study the writings of Robson Lowe and others. His eyes were further opened to the growing market

in postal history when in 1947 he visited the National Stamp Exhibition in London. The town of Cullompton

and its surrounding area is famous for its working textile and paper mills and it was no surprise that it was in

the textile industry that Ron pursued his career.

Whilst on a two-and-a-half year work assignment in Australia Ron became a member of the Royal Philatelic

Society, Victoria, even winning the Society's silver medal for his study of the Great Britain 1841 1d red, the first

time the award had been made to a 'non-Australian'. Over the years Ron's collection continued to grow, and he

won many awards at club, national and international levels. His exhibit of the postal history of Exeter achieved

a Gold Medal at Ausipex 84 in Melbourne.

The Britannia Stamp Bureau had been first registered in Ashburton, Victoria in 1957, and when a wave of

redundancies freed Ron from work responsibilities the opportunity to revive the company in 1970 was too good

to miss. Together with wife Gillian he turned his hobby into a business, producing over the next 20 years a series

of splendid auction catalogues featuring interesting postal history, stamps and worldwide philatelic material.

He also found time to reprint and publish in two volumes the unrepealed Acts of Parliament relating to the Post

Office from 1710 to1844, and the Britannia depicta, or, Ogilby improved road atlas of England and Wales 1731

Ron's The Postal Markings of Devon, a superb set of three volumes with detailed listings of handstamps, dates,

maps and a great deal more, was the product of countless hours of research and is today an absolutely essential

tool for the Devon postal historian.
