Atmospherics

Itrsquos still Christmas so there are intentional themes shared and developed across the three texts and Psalm for today Basic among these is the decisive action of God breaking into human history in the person of Jesus Godrsquos decisive inbreaking changes the playing field for everyone wherever and however it happens

For the exiles returned from Babylon to face a ruined capital city Isaiahrsquos expectation of Godrsquos action is that Jerusalem will ldquoshine out like the dawnrdquo for all to see Godrsquos inbreaking happens in and for the ruined places and Godrsquos vindication of such places blazes This is far more than ldquoYes we canrdquo The word of the prophet is ldquoYes God willrdquo

As history is normally told however it may be hard to see how the prophetrsquos expectation was fulfilled Jerusalem and its temple the largest religious complex on the planet then or since were rebuilt but the city and the people remained under the control of other powersmdashPersia Greece the Seleucids and Romemdash through the time of Jesus If anyone heard the prophetrsquos words and expected Israel to be independent much less a leading capitol of the world they would have been disappointed

But if we affirm with the peoples of this book that the prophet truly spoke a word from the Lord there need be no sense of disappointment but rather a readjustment of our expectations of what Godrsquos success looks like The prophet nowhere says that Jerusalem would be independent He says it would be vindicated He nowhere says that the vindicated Jerusalem would be a world-class power as the world classes power He says it would be ldquoa crown of beauty in the hand of the Lord a royal diadem in the hand of your Godrdquo And what the prophets have always spoken of Godrsquos power is not what would typically make any nation a world-class power as the world classes power

Galatians continues the theme The world was ripe for change Thatrsquos what ldquothe fullness of timerdquo means (verse 4) The change the incarnation brought is described not in terms of shifts in world power but in terms of shift in primal relationships down to who our parents are Incarnation means we are adopted as Godrsquos children (verse 5) More than adopted we are given the Spirit of God We are no longer slaves to anyone or any previous religious system We are made individually and as the body of Christ children and heirs of Godrsquos inheritance (verse 7)

Luke brings the personal and the social together in the person of Simeon in todayrsquos reading of the presentation of Jesus in the temple 33 days after his birth as required by Torah Simeon has an intense personal relationship with God He knew God deeply through personal and public acts of revelation devotion worship and prayer He lived on a promise by God that he would not die until he saw the Messiah And when Mary and Joseph bring their child in for the usual purification rites this old man takes the baby from their arms and declares the promise to him and to the world fulfilled ldquoLord you now have set your servant free to go in peace as you have promised For these eyes of mine have seen the Savior whom you have prepared for all the world to seemdasha light to enlighten the nations and the glory of your people Israelrdquo Itrsquos as personal and as public as it gets as individual and as corporate as local and as cosmic as temporal and as eternal all at once

The reading continues It was not Simeon only but also Anna who praised God and witnessed to one and all what God would do through this child Simeonrsquos song and blessing opened her lips in praise and witness

A side note Both Simeon and Anna lived at the margins of their society but both were given respect What they do in this story could seem in some cultures (including dominant US culture) to be the acts of crazy people

possibly even dangerously crazy people But here their words and deeds are signs of the Spiritrsquos stirring Godrsquos faithfulness and the fulfillment of the prophecy of Joel who spoke of daughters prophesying and old men dreaming dreams (Joel 228)

Today is a good day to remember the Simeons and Annas in your midst But today is not about celebrating these people per se but rather about celebrating what caused the first Simeon and Anna to do what they did the incarnation of God in Jesus Christ the inbreaking of a new realm in him the one as Simeon attests was ldquoappointed for the falling and the rising of many in Israel a sign that will be opposed so that the inner thoughts of many are unveiledrdquo Today is primarily about affirming and rejoicing in the reality that in Jesus the worldrsquos game can never be played the same way again and that we can know and be part of this reality personally

In Your Planning Team

Presentation or Holy Innocents This Morning

First remember you have a choice today You can go with the readings appointed for the First Sunday after Christmas or you can go with the readings for The Feast of the Holy Innocents The emphasis and feeling of these two observances both kept for centuries in Christmas Season and each with importance are too different to combine Todayrsquos ldquoproperrdquo readings are celebratory Those for Holy Innocents are solemn and contemplative Donrsquot try to combine them Pick the one that your congregation may be in the best position to engage for this yearrsquos Christmas Season series

Readings for Holy Innocents should you choose to go in that direction areJeremiah 3115-17 Psalm 124 Revelation 211-7 and Matthew 2 3-18 (Source The Book of Common Prayer 1979) If you choose not to keep this as part of Sunday morning worship you may want to help your congregation find other ways to observe itmdashperhaps a Sunday evening service or as a solemn observance in homes or small groups today or later this week

Determine Your Focus

While all of the texts relate to each other particularly through the gospel reading each does so from a different angle Isaiah addresses the rebuilding and flourishing of a civilization Galatians addresses the renovation God makes in human hearts and in the subculture called church The prophecies of Simeon and Anna announce salvation revealed in the baby the hope of Jerusalem and the hope of the world

While it is good to note all three in the course of worship today in some way ask yourselves which of the three best accomplishes the purpose of this service within your overall series and for the lives of the people in your particular congregation Then focus preaching and the sending on that angle while including the other two as well

As you do however remember this The ultimate focus of this season is to proclaim Christ not simply to encourage our activity here Christ is the one who not only restores but vindicates Christ is the one who has given us new life and the Spirit is the one who continues to move in us to affirm our adoption as Godrsquos children and heirs And it is the coming of the Christ the Messiah into the worldmdashas eventmdashthat both Simeon and Anna proclaimed

A Christian Worship Classic The Song of Simeon

The Song of Simeon included in todayrsquos gospel reading has been a classic of Christian worship and devotional life since the earliest centuries It has functioned as a basic part of daily evening prayer since at least the sixth century and in some traditions was used as the prayer of thanksgiving after receiving Communion as well However you handle the gospel lesson itself today strongly consider how to help your congregation experience the Song of Simeon in several forms and musical styles mdash perhaps as a sung Canticle (UMH 225 and 226) a choir anthem a chant or a more contemporary or indigenous cultural setting Elements of this song might also be included in a call to worship or the Great Thanksgiving (using Word and Table II UMH pages 13-15)
