1ST SUNDAY OF LENT

The covenant revealed to Noah in Genesis 9:8-15 is confirmed with a rainbow. The covenant of love revealed by the Lord, as explained in 1Peter 3:21, is confirmed by our baptism into the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. We know that it is important to have a personal relationship with Jesus, but did you know that this calls for a covenant with Jesus? Covenant love is a total self-giving to the beloved unto death itself, as Jesus gave his life on the cross for his bride the Church. This Lent we are given the opportunity to examine our covenant with the Lord as “the kingdom of God is at hand” MK 1:15. Does my love for the Lord move me to live kingdom justice by the way I treat the world and those around me? Would anyone know that I am a Christian, a follower of Jesus, by the way I live my life? Do I draw others into the kingdom by my example as a disciple of Christ? In Ps. 25:10, the psalmist reminds us “Your ways, O Lord, are love and truth to those who keep your covenant.” In his Lenten message, Pope Francis warns against the globalization of indifference, the fruit of our selfishness. Therefore, let us seek to grow more faithful in our covenant of sacrificial love with the Lord Jesus, who is the Faithful One, during the forty days of Lent.

LENTEN MISSION

Msgr. Gaston Hebert will give our parish mission this Lent on March 2, 3 and 4 at 7:00 p.m. each evening. Msgr. Hebert, retired here in Albuquerque, is a priest of the Diocese of Little Rock and has been a frequent confessor and celebrant of Mass here at Annunciation. As a dynamic preacher, Msgr. Hebert is sure to provide food for thought and inspiration during this season of renewal. The theme for the mission will be “Faith: Unyielding, Authentic and Loving”. In a world where there is so much disbelief and darkness, we are called to stand strong as faithful witnesses to the light of the gospel. The mission teaching will be given in the context of the Mass, which on those three evenings will be transferred from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Please come and bring a friend to learn more about how to be a true Catholic witness in today’s culture.

MEN’S CHOIR

There is good news for our Laudate Men’s Ensemble–they have found a new director in the person of James Finch. James, a native of Michigan, studied music at Spring Arbor University and obtained his Masters of Music from UNM. He directed the Los Altos Christian Church choirs as their Director of Music until 2012 when he moved east for other jobs. James returned to Albuquerque last year and should be an enthusiastic, young director for our ensemble. If you are interested in joining this choir of faith-filled men, please call the Liturgy Office at 298-9636 for more information on rehearsals. “Men of faith, rise up and sing...”

RICE BOWLS

Please take a Catholic Relief Services Rice Bowl for your family this weekend so that you can share with over 13,000 faith communities who participate in this 40 year tradition of giving to the needy during Lent. 75% of your gift supports CRS’ programs worldwide and 25% goes to alleviating poverty locally. From agriculture projects to water and sanitation programs, from nutrition services to education projects, CRS’ Rice Bowls reach thousands in need. Please return the proceeds from your rice bowl with a check on Palm Sunday and God bless your support!

PARISH MISSION STATEMENT Our Lady of the Annunciation Roman Catholic Parish is a people of living faith rooted in the Gospel,

centered on the Eucharist and led by the Holy Spirit.

We are inspired by the example of Mary to continue the mission of Jesus Christ by ministering to all.

Annunciation Social Concerns Committee extends grateful appreciation to parishioners for your generous help for Catholic Charities. The need is great. If you were not able to bring your donation bags this weekend, please take them to Sr. Cristina’s office any day this week. We will deliver them to Catholic Charities. Thank you very much for supporting this

important ministry of helping the poor in our midst.

40 Days for Life Annunciation Parish is assigned this Wednesday, Feb. 24, at 7:00AM to 7:00PM in front of Planned Parenthood at 701 San Mateo NE. If you have not signed up for an hour prayer vigil and peaceful silent presence, you may still do so this weekend after Mass. More lives can be saved if you come out to pray. Please mark your calendar. Participate once again in this nationwide life-saving event. We thank our parishioners who are actively involved

in the Respect Life Ministry and the Knights of Columbus. Thank you.

CRS Rice Bowl Lenten Campaign 2015 Is the Lenten faith-in-action program of Catholic Relief Services (CRS), inviting faith communities to live in solidarity with our poorest and most vulnerable brothers and sisters around the world through the three Lenten pillars of prayer, fasting and almsgiving. Please remember to get your family’s Rice Bowl box for your sacrificial offering throughout the Lenten season. Your donation

will be collected on Palm Sunday, March 29, 2015. Thank you.

Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) The third stage is the Period of Purification and Enlightenment. This phase takes place during Lent, and is marked by three community celebrations known as Scrutinies. During this period, the elect and the parish community together focus on conversion, scrutinize their lives in light of the Gospel. These scrutinizes coincide with the 3rd, 4th, and

5th Sundays in Lent, and they ask God for healing and forgiveness of the elect.

Reflection: “In last year’s Easter message, Pope Francis remembered those who are unable to celebrate the good news of the resurrection: refugees, the sick and dying, victims of kidnapping, those who are persecuted for their faith, and countless others who suffer. No matter how joyous it is, any celebration will be tinged with sadness when we remember those who can’t join us. But by the same token, our season of penitence and sorrow for sin can be lifted up in joy, as we look forward to the

eternal life of perfect happiness Jesus promises all of us, (God’s) children.”

God our Father, we are like Peter sinking into the water, whose faith falters until Jesus grabs his hand, we are like the thief deserving crucifixion, whose hope does not exist until he hears the words of Jesus;

we are like the Samaritan woman lost in our shame, who know not love until we find Jesus waiting for us at the well. Bring us back to you through the encounter with your Son Jesus Christ, the origin and goal of our faith, hope and love.

In this Lenten season may we not betray your love by trying to deserve it. Help us to recognize you as the origin and goal of all of the desires you place in our hearts.

Help us to be true to ourselves and true to you continuing to beg for your love. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

ENDOW: Aquinas for Beginners ENDOW: Aquinas for Beginners ENDOW: Aquinas for Beginners ENDOW: Aquinas for Beginners 3 MAR, 7:00PM, SFH Aquinas for Beginners Part I invites women to make the acquaintance of one of the giants of Catholic teaching. properties of the soul, five reasons for the existence of God, and how to understand human passions. This study provides a great opportunity for women of faith to stretch intellectually as they grow spiritually. Questions: Contact Sr Lisa Marie

Why do you do what you do?

Are you doing it for God?

(question posed to 8th Grade Girls’ Bible Study)

When we think of a pact, we may think of a strong agreement

between persons or nations. For Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati, it was a “pledge...that knows no earthly boundaries or temporal limits: union in prayer.” For Frassati, it was a commitment to radically change the world. Will you join us this Lent? It’s a simple way to practice Charity: 1. Pray the Prayer for the Courage to Be Great; 2. Read from time to time 1 Corinthians 13 3. Do a small act of charity each day. Go to the website for links to the prayers!
