The Lessons

The First Reading Isaiah 64:1-9 Reader: A reading from the book of Isaiah

O that you would tear open the heavens and come down, so that the mountains would quake at

your presence--as when fire kindles brushwood and the fire causes water to boil--to make your

name known to your adversaries, so that the nations might tremble at your presence! When you did

awesome deeds that we did not expect, you came down, the mountains quaked at your presence.

From ages past no one has heard, no ear has perceived, no eye has seen any God besides you, who

works for those who wait for him. You meet those who gladly do right, those who remember you in

your ways. But you were angry, and we sinned; because you hid yourself we transgressed. We have all

become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous deeds are like a filthy cloth. We all fade like a

leaf, and our iniquities, like the wind, take us away. There is no one who calls on your name, or

attempts to take hold of you; for you have hidden your face from us, and have delivered us into the

hand of our iniquity. Yet, O Lord, you are our Father; we are the clay, and you are our potter; we are all

the work of your hand. Do not be exceedingly angry, O Lord, and do not remember iniquity forever.

Now consider, we are all your people.

Reader: The word of the Lord

People: Thanks be to God

Psalm 80:1-7, 16-18 sung by choir chant by E. Bairstow

1 Hear, O Shepherd of Israel, leading Joseph like a flock; *

shine forth, you that are enthroned upon the cherubim.

2 In the presence of Ephraim, Benjamin, and Manasseh, *

stir up your strength and come to help us.

3 Restore us, O God of hosts; *

show the light of your countenance, and we shall be saved.

4 O Lord God of hosts, *

how long will you be angered

despite the prayers of your people?

5 You have fed them with the bread of tears; *

you have given them bowls of tears to drink.

6 You have made us the derision of our neighbors, *

and our enemies laugh us to scorn.

7 Restore us, O God of hosts; *

show the light of your countenance, and we shall be saved.

16 Let your hand be upon the man of your right hand, *

the son of man you have made so strong for yourself.

Page 5: First Sunday of Advent Holy Eucharist Rite II 2020 10:30 a.m

17 And so will we never turn away from you; *

give us life, that we may call upon your Name.

18 Restore us, O Lord God of hosts; *

show the light of your countenance, and we shall be saved.

The Second Reading 1 Corinthians 1:3-9

Reader: A reading from the letter of Paul to the Corinthians

G race to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. I give thanks to my God always for you because of the grace of God that has been given you in Christ Jesus, for in every

way you have been enriched in him, in speech and knowledge of every kind-- just as the testimony of Christ has been strengthened among you-- so that you are not lacking in any spiritual gift as you wait for the revealing of our Lord Jesus Christ. He will also strengthen you to the end, so that you may be blameless on the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is faithful; by him you were called into the fellowship of his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.

The Gospel Stand Mark 13:24-37 Deacon: The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark People: Glory to you, Lord Christ.

J esus said, “In those days, after that suffering, the sun will be darkened,

and the moon will not give its light, and the stars will be falling from heaven, and the powers in the heavens will be shaken.

Then they will see ‘the Son of Man coming in clouds’ with great power and glory. Then he will send out the angels, and gather his elect from the four winds, from the ends of the earth to the ends of heaven.

“From the fig tree learn its lesson: as soon as its branch becomes tender and puts forth its leaves, you know that summer is near. So also, when you see these things taking place, you know that he is near, at the very gates. Truly I tell you, this generation will not pass away until all these things have taken place. Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.

“But about that day or hour no one knows, neither the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. Beware, keep alert; for you do not know when the time will come. It is like a man going on a journey, when he leaves home and puts his slaves in charge, each with his work, and commands the doorkeeper to be on the watch. Therefore, keep awake—for you do not know when the master of the house will come, in the evening, or at midnight, or at cockcrow, or at dawn, or else he may find you asleep when he comes suddenly. And what I say to you I say to all: Keep awake.”

Deacon: The Gospel of the Lord People: Praise to you, Lord Christ.

The Nicene Creed

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father

He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Prayers of the People Deacon: The Kingdom of God is upon us. Let us put away the works of darkness and be clothed in the brilliance of God’s light, as we offer our prayers responding to each petition by saying, “Come, Lord Jesus.”

Come between the warring nations of the world, enter the chambers of government and the hearts of our leaders, and bring the peace that passes all understanding; for this we pray. Come, Lord Jesus.

Come to those suffering from addiction, free them from falsehood, shame, and guilt, fill them with courage that overcomes temptation, and give them an abundance of your grace; for this we pray. Come, Lord Jesus.

Come to those who sit alone in empty rooms, who suffer from the pain of hunger and grief, and who live with anxiety and fear, and invite them into the glorious fellowship of the blessed Trinity; for this we pray. Come, Lord Jesus.

Come, spare us from our deceit and selfishness, from our attachment to the false idols of our age, from our excuses for not living the gospel, and awaken us to your hope that we may keep watch for your appearing; for this we pray. Come, Lord Jesus.

Come in the Eucharistic Meal, that strengthened by your Body and Blood, we may proclaim your kingdom in our daily lives; for this we pray. Come, Lord Jesus.

Come and open wide the gate of heaven, that the faithful departed may find themselves in the arms of your mercy; for this we pray. Come, Lord Jesus.

Come, Lord Jesus, dwell in our hearts, as we continue the offering of our prayers.

Rejoicing in the reign of Christ over all creation, let us continue our prayers.

Presider: Hasten, O Father, the coming of thy kingdom; and grant that we thy servants, who now

live by faith, may with joy behold thy Son at his coming in glorious majesty; even Jesus Christ, our only

Mediator and Advocate. Amen.

Confession of Sin Stand or Kneel

Deacon: Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor.

Silence

All: Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen. Presider: Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life. Amen.

Prayer for Stewardship written by Saint Ignatius of Loyola Take, Lord, and receive all my liberty, my memory, my understanding, and my entire will. All I have and call my own. You have given all to me. To you, Lord, I return it. Everything is yours; do with it what you will. Give me only your love and your grace, that is enough for me. Amen. Gracious and loving God, Giver of all, accept these pledges as tokens of the life, labor, and love of this congregation, offered to the glory of God and for the work of God's church in the world. And the blessing of God Almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be upon those who make these offerings today. Amen. Birthday Prayer Watch over thy children, O Lord, as their days increase; bless and guide them wherever they may be. Strengthen them when they stand; comfort them when discouraged or sorrowful; raise them up when they fall; and in their hearts may thy peace which passeth understanding abide all the days of their lives; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Anniversary Prayer O gracious and everliving God, look mercifully on those, who come to renew the promises they have made to each other. Grant them your blessing, and assist them with your grace, that with true fidelity and steadfast love they may honor and keep their promises and vows; through Jesus Christ our Savior, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Offertory Remember O Thou Man T. Ravenscroft

Remember, o thou man, o thou man, o thou man, remember, o thou man, thy time is spent. Remember, o thou man, how thou camest to me then, and I did what I can. Therefore repent. Remember Adam's fall, o thou man, o thou man, remember Adam's fall from heaven to hell. Remember Adam's fall, How we were condemned all to hell perpetual, there for to dwell. Remember God's goodness, o thou man, o thou man, Remember God's goodness And promise made. Remember God's goodness, how his only Son he sent our sins for to redress. Be not afraid. The angels all did sing, o thou man, o thou man, the angels all did sing on Sion hill. The angels all did sing praises to our heavenly king, and peace to man living, with right good will.

The Holy Communion

The Great Thanksgiving, Eucharistic Prayer B

Presider The Lord be with you. People And also with you. Presider Lift up your hearts. People We lift them to the Lord. Presider Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. People It is right to give him thanks and praise. Presider: It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth.

Because you sent your beloved Son to redeem us from sin and death, and to make us heirs in him of everlasting life; that when he shall come again in power and great triumph to judge the world, we may without shame or fear rejoice to behold his appearing.

Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name:

The Celebrant continues

We give thanks to you, O God, for the goodness and love which you have made known to us in

creation; in the calling of Israel to be your people; in your Word spoken through the prophets; and

above all in the Word made flesh, Jesus, your Son. For in these last days you sent him to be incarnate

from the Virgin Mary, to be the Savior and Redeemer of the world. In him, you have delivered us from

evil, and made us worthy to stand before you. In him, you have brought us out of error into truth, out

of sin into righteousness, out of death into life.

On the night before he died for us, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to

you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for

you. Do this for the remembrance of me.”

After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said,

"Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for

the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me."

Therefore, according to his command, O Father,

Celebrant and People

We remember his death,

We proclaim his resurrection,

We await his coming in glory;

The Celebrant continues

And we offer our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to you, O Lord of all; presenting to you, from

your creation, this bread and this wine.

We pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts that they may be the Sacrament

of the Body of Christ and his Blood of the new Covenant. Unite us to your Son in his sacrifice, that we

may be acceptable through him, being sanctified by the Holy Spirit. In the fullness of time, put all

things in subjection under your Christ, and bring us to that heavenly country where, with Saint Mark

and all your saints, we may enter the everlasting heritage of your sons and daughters; through Jesus

Christ our Lord, the firstborn of all creation, the head of the Church, and the author of our salvation.

By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty

Father, now and for ever. AMEN.

Presider: As our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say:

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power and the Glory, forever and ever. Amen

Christian Formation and Classes

New Adult Forum Begins this Week Starting on the First Sunday of Advent our Sunday Formation class will be based on Adam Hamiltion’s book Incarnation: Discovering the Significance of Christmas. You are invited to read the book along with us but it is not required. Each class will start with a short video on the theme and then group discussion. The topics for each week are:

11/29 - Advent 1: Presidents and Kings 12/06 - Advent 2: The Savior and our Need for Saving 12/13 - Advent 3: Emmanuel in the Midst of A Pandemic 12/20 - Advent 4: The Light of the World

Children's Sunday School @9:30 Ages 3-5th grade Until we are able to meet in person, we will meet over Zoom. I know Zoom isn't the same as in person, but as a parent, I promise we will make the time they spend with us worth it! They will need a Worship Tool Box to use each week. If your child wants to participate, Luke will get one to you-he will leave one in the office or deliver it to you. From 9:30-9:45 we will share music, games, and the weekly story. All will come back together at 10:00 for a closing video and prayer. We hope these 30 minutes will help your child grow in God's love each week! Contact Luke with questions [email protected].

Youth Sunday School: Think. Believe. Do. We will begin Sunday school via Zoom this Sunday at 9:15am. Youth in 6th-12th grade are invited to join us to think about faith, grow in our beliefs and do the work of God in the world. Zoom info: Meeting ID: 833 5617 9439 Password: tbd2020

Musical Class on Thursday Evenings The music discussions on Thursday nights have been illuminating, inspiring and meaningful. We have explored a wide range of works from Jazz to Classical, each time finding meaning in the music that goes beyond mere historical and biographical knowledge. Please contact Tim Allen [email protected] for links to all the music which we listen to before the class and to get the Zoom link for the meeting.

Christmas Pageant Help Needed We need your help for the Christmas pageant! Yes, Christmas will be a little different this year, but the story of Jesus' birth will not. If a pregnant Mary can travel from Nazareth to Bethlehem and give birth to Jesus in a stable, we can find a fun way to share the story during a pandemic. On Sundays, November 22 and 29, we will be having a drive-by Advent event at St. Mark's. We will be giving out resources to help you during this season, and you can pick up a costume for your child. We will film over zoom on Sundays, December 6 and 13 at 9:30am. Luke Gilbert will compile the footage into a video that we will share with the parish on December 20. If you have any questions, please contact Luke, [email protected].

EYC Schedule Change Since more people will be traveling over the next month, COVID numbers are rising in Arkansas, and cold weather is coming, we have decided to move to an every other week schedule for our groups. Sr High will meet one week from 6-7, and Jr High will meet the next from 6-7. This gives us a 14 day window between groups meetings, allows us to continue to use the outdoor space as much as possible, and keeps everyone safe. For the month of December, the schedule is as follows: December 2nd: Sr High(9th-12th grade) meets from 6-7pm December 9th: Jr High(6th-8th grade) meets from 6-7pm December 16th: Sr High meets from 6-7pm December 23rd: Jr High meets from 6-7pm December 30th: NO MEETING

Drive-Through Communion at 10:30 AM Sunday Service. Listen to the service at 105.7 FM. Starting this Sunday (11/15), Saint Mark's is offering another way to worship. You're invited to come and park your car in the church parking lot and either watch the 10:30 AM service on your mobile device or listen to it on your radio at 105.7 FM. When it comes time to receive communion, cars will line up and drive through the porte-cochère, where priests will distribute the sacrament. Important things to remember:

If watching on your mobile device at the church, please make sure to turn off your WiFi and use your data plan, so the streaming broadcast from the church does not get interrupted

Please wear a mask when receiving communion.

Advent Drive-thru Following the 10:30 Service Join us this Sunday, November 29, from 11:30-12:30 for our Advent Drive Through Event. We will have home activities for all ages, Advent wreaths for those who need them, and pageant costumes for the kids to pick up for our virtual pageant. We hope to see you there!

Ministry Minute Even a pandemic can't stop the Saint Mark's choir from making a joyful noise! Our choir members bring you beautiful music every Sunday with soloists at the 8 am service, and a quartet at the 10:30 streamed service. If you love to sing, contact Tim Allen, [email protected], for more information!

Love Saint Mark's Yard Signs Help us get the word out about Saint Mark's. A while back, we distributed yard signs inviting people to join us for Church. Since "going to church" looks different this year, we have created stickers to update the signs asking people to "Join us This Week!" You may pick up your stickers after the 8 am service or at the Church office during normal business hours and then put it over the top of the sign where it says, "Join us this week." Yard signs with stickers are also available if you don't have one. Display it in your yard for everyone to see--your yard sign just might the "sign" that someone needs to see right now.

St. Francis House Christmas Obviously, COVID has changed everyone's plans for the holidays, and St. Francis House is no exception. This year, instead of angel trees, SFH is asking angel tree churches to provide funds for gift cards instead. Every year, we provide 100 families, around 250 children, with Christmas gifts thanks to the generosity of area churches. St. Mark's generally receives 60 families of no more than two children each. You may either purchase gift cards (Walmart or Target) or you may send money for SFH purchase the cards. Please have your December 10. Please let Ashley know if you will be able to help this year and we at St. Francis House wish you all a happy and healthy holiday season! For those who would like to buy a tangible item for a child this Christmas, we have partnered with Hall High to collect names of students and their families who have experienced extreme circumstances this year. You may sign up to sponsor a child at https://www.signupgenius.com/go/508094FAEAA2BA6FD0-hall

These gifts should be wrapped, labeled, and delivered to the church by December 14. If you have questions about this, or any of our other Reach Out activities this winter, please email Ashley, [email protected]

A Note from St. Francis House Our clothing room is open, and we are taking limited donations of clothing, household goods and toiletries. Due to a reduced number of volunteers, we request those who want to donate contact Victor Carbajal, [email protected], or call St. Francis House, 501-664-5036 to schedule a drop-off time. All clothing must be clean and in good repair. All donations should be on hangers or in boxes. We are not able to accept bags of donations.
