ADVENT/CHRISTMAS OBLIGATION Q: Are the faithful able to attend one liturgy on
December 24th to fulfill their obligation for both the
Fourth Sunday of Advent and Christmas? Will it
“count for both?”
A: Despite falling on a Sunday, the faithful are still
obligated to participate in two Masses between
Dec 23rd - 25th: one for the Fourth Sunday of Advent
(anytime from 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 23 until
4:00 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 24) and one for the
Christmas Solemnity (either on Sunday, Dec. 24 after
4:00 p.m. or Monday Christmas Day). As the Church,
we therefore complete our Advent journey with all four
Sundays in preparation for the celebration of
Christmas.
This year, the Fourth Sunday of Advent will fall on December 24th, Christmas Eve. While this does not happen often (not since 2006), it reminds us of the need to plan ahead in order to participate in both the Fourth Sunday of Advent and Christmas! Our Advent journey has brought us through three weeks of preparation and reflection on Christ’s coming into the world. While this year we only have one day of the Fourth Week, the Fourth Sunday of Advent will best prepare us to enter fully into the joyful celebration of Christmas. At a time when we often find ourselves busy with preparations for meals, travel, and shopping, keeping our observance of the Fourth Sunday of Advent so close to Christmas allows us to take this special opportunity to quiet ourselves before the Christmas celebration, to make us aware of Christ’s presence, and recognize the full impact and joy of the arrival of the Christmas Time. Please see the liturgy schedule to select which Masses for both the Fourth Sunday of Advent and Christmas you will be participating in. May we together prepare for the peace of Jesus Christ to enter into our hearts and homes during this very special time of year ~Michael Poradek, Divine Worship Director

PRAYER CORNER Father in heaven, Our hearts desire the warmth of
Your love and our minds are searching for the light of
Your Word. Increase our longing for Christ our Savior
and give us the strength to grow in love, that the dawn
of His coming may find us rejoicing in His presence
and welcoming the light of His truth. We ask this in the
name of Jesus our Lord. Amen.

FROM FR. JOE
After my homily last weekend, a number of you expressed interest in having a copy of St. Justin Martyr’s
letter to Emperor Antoninus Pius, explaining how Christians celebrated the Mass. It was written around the
year 155. Here it is. It can also be found in the Catechism of the Catholic Church in paragraph 1345:
On the day we call the day of the sun, all who dwell in the city or country gather in the same place.
The memoirs of the apostles and the writings of the prophets are read, as much as time permits.
When the reader has finished, he who presides over those gathered admonishes and challenges them to imitate
these beautiful things.
Then we all rise together and offer prayers for ourselves . . .and for all others, wherever they may be, so that we may be
found righteous by our life and actions, and faithful to the commandments, so as to obtain eternal salvation.
When the prayers are concluded we exchange the kiss.
Then someone brings bread and a cup of water and wine mixed together to him who presides over the brethren.
He takes them and offers praise and glory to the Father of the universe, through the name of the Son and of the Holy
Spirit and for a considerable time he gives thanks (in Greek: eucharistian) that we have been judged worthy of these gifts.
When he has concluded the prayers and thanksgivings, all present give voice to an acclamation by saying: 'Amen.'
When he who presides has given thanks and the people have responded, those whom we call deacons give to those present
the "eucharized" bread, wine and water and take them to those who are absent. ~Fr. Joe
