Are you familiar with the story of Maria Chapman? She was the adopted daughter of Grammy winning singer/song-writer Steven Curtis Chapman and Mary Beth Chapman. They adopted her in China. She was the youngest of their six children. In May of 2008, Maria was accidentally killed in their driveway. Their 17 year old son Will was the driver. Maria saw Will returning home, and she had no perception of the vehicle, only that her brother was coming home, and she wanted him to play with her, to push her in the swing. So she came running to the driveway. Will never saw her run into the

car.

Grief is so heavy. In 2010, Steven and Mary Beth began to share their grief with the public. (You can watch their interviews on the 700 club and on Huckabee on Youtube.) Now more than three years after the tragic event, Steven and Mary Beth say they hear God saying to them “You will have more time with Maria in the future than you ever had with her in the past.” They are comforted by God with them. They recognize life is different now, it will never be the same, but in a

very real way it is re-created.

This is expressed in Steven‟s latest album called “Re-creation.” In a Youtube video, Steven expresses songs he wrote years ago now have more profound meaning, and as a result he reworked these songs with new melodic tones. Here are a few examples of lyrics which now have for him

more profound meaning.

In his song “The Great

Adventure” he writes,

We'll travel over, over

mountains so high. We'll go

through valleys below. Still

through it all we'll find that this

is the greatest journey that the

human heart will ever see. The

love of God will take us far

beyond our wildest dreams.

In “Heaven In The Real World”

he writes,

To stand in the pouring rain and

believe the sun will shine again.

To know that the grave is not

the end. To feel the embrace of

grace and cross the line where

real life begins. And know in

your heart you've found the

missing part.

In “Speechless” he writes,

And I am speechless I'm

astonished and amazed. I am

silenced by your wondrous

grace. You have saved me.

You have raised me from the

grave. And I am speechless in

your presence now I'm

astounded as I consider how

You have shown us A love that

leaves us speechless.

And in “Magnificent Obsession”

he writes,

Lord, You know how much I

want to know so much In the

way of answers and

explanations. I have cried and

prayed. And still I seem to stay

in the middle of life‟s

complications. All this pursuing

leaves me feeling like I‟m

chasing down the wind. But

now it‟s brought me back to

You and I can see again.

Please note what Steven and

Mary Beth are saying God is

teaching them. “We‟ll go

through valleys below still

through it all we‟ll find...the

love of God will take us far

beyond our wildest dreams.”

“To stand in the pouring rain

and believe the sun will shine

again, to know that the grave

is not the end.” “You have

saved me, You have raised

me from the grave.” “I have

cried and prayed...now it‟s

brought me back to You and I

can see again.”

Are you familiar with the story

of five young missionaries

who were killed by a primitive

tribe, the Aucas, in Ecuador in

1956? Nate Saint was one of

the five, he left behind a wife,

and three children. After his

death, his sister Rachel and

Elizabeth Elliot, wife of Jim

Elliot, another of the slain

missionaries, continued the

missionary work among the

Aucas. In time the natives

who killed the missionaries all

came to accept Jesus Christ

and become in their own

words, “God Followers.”

On a concert tour in 2002,

Steven Curtis Chapman was

joined on stage by Steve

Saint and by Mincaye, one of

the natives who killed Steve

Saint‟s father 46 years earlier.

After Steve‟s aunt Rachel

died in 1994, Steve and his

wife and children went to

Ecuador to live among the

Waodani (formerly called the

Preschool has been very busy! We have started learning our colors, letters,

shapes, and numbers. So far we have worn, eaten, painted, and colored red and

blue! We have learned the circle and the square. We practiced being loud and

leaping for „L‟. We have painted with our feet for „F‟ and peeled and eaten eggs

for „E‟. Letter F brought our study of Fire! We are learning how to be safe in a

fire situation, how to stop, drop, and roll, and preparing for our trip to the fire

station.

The afternoon students are practicing writing their last names and writing letters correctly. We are

also practicing letter sounds and how those sounds make words!!! The morning students are practicing

tracing and writing their first names, learning new letters, and cutting on the lines. We are also learning how

to share and be good friends!! We are always having lots of fun!! †

Great fun for the entire family!!

From the Pastor, continued

Aucas). During the year and a half Steve was there he and Mincaye became friends. In the movie “End of

The Spear” there is a scene where Mincaye takes Steve to the place where the missionaries were killed.

There the two men acknowledge their pain and the grace of God in forgiveness.

Watching a Youtube video of Steven Curtis Chapman with Steve Saint and Mincaye on stage together in

2002, and then thinking about Steven and Mary Beth‟s pain six years later I was struck by these two stories of

God‟s working in people‟s lives over long sweeps of time. What is God‟s purpose? Will we ever understand?

His perspective is eternity, and ours is still locked in time.

In another Steven Curtis Chapman song, he writes,

“God is God and I am not I can only see a part of the picture He‟s painting God is God and I am man So I‟ll

never understand it all For only God is God.” ~Don Hasty
