A Word from the Pastor …

One of my favorite stories is about the explorer Ernest Shackelton and the crew of the ship called Endurance who set sail for Antarctica days before the outbreak of World War I. Their mission was to walk where no human being had ever walked before in Antarctica. But they fell short after the Endurance became entrapped in ice just 85 miles from their destination. FIRE ON THE MOUNTAIN New Bible Study Beginning Sept. 13

God heard the cry of the Israelites and delivered them from slavery in Egypt, but God had them go through the desert before reaching the Promised Land. What did God want them to learn during this time, and what does He want us to learn today during our times of trial? Fire on the Mountain is a DVD-based study by Ray Vander Laan, a teacher, historian, and noted Christian author. Through in-depth Bible study and views of stunning scenery filmed on location in Israel, the Bible comes alive with Ray’s extensive knowledge of geography, culture, and language of the Holy Land. This study is sponsored by Journey Christian Fellowship and will meet at Zander’s Coffee House in Newton at 4 pm on the following Sundays: September 13 and 27, October 18 and 25, and November 8 and 22. Journey is a community Bible study, and FUMC members as well as guests are encouraged to participate as we make new friends and build our faith. For more information, please call the church office, email [email protected], or visit the facebook page at www.facebook.com/journeychristiannewton.

SEND them to serve in the world

THE HANDS OF CHRIST IN COPPERHILL

St. Teresa of Avila once wrote: Christ has no body now on earth but yours, No hands but yours, no feet but yours, Yours are the eyes through which to look out Christ’s compassion to the world Yours are the feet with which he is to go about doing good; Yours are the hands with which he is to bless others now. The Youth of First Methodist were the hands and feet of Christ in Copperhill, TN as they put a new roof on the home of Connie and her granddaughter, Trinity. Through the ministry of TeamEffort, the youth and adults spent a fun and spirit filled week serving Christ and meeting other youth from all over the southeast. The group was housed at a wilderness camp in Cop-perhill, just miles from Georgia and North Carolina. In addition to hands on mission work, they enjoyed powerful worship and group building adventures like rafting the Ocoee River and horseback riding. Thank you to Jim Richard and Lynsey Wayne for generously giving of their time and energy to lead this summer's youth mission trip.

New

Mini-Bus

As you may already know, the church has approved the purchase of a new 15 Passenger Mini-Bus to replace our 19 year old van. Our present van has ceased to be effective trans-portation for our senior, youth, and children ministries. The new Bus should already be de-livered by the time you read this newsletter. We plan to pay for the new Bus in the follow-ing three ways: 1. changing the current line item in the annual budget from renting vans to paying for the

new bus, 2. applying the proceeds from the sale of our old van, 3. gifts, donations and memorials to the newly established Mini-Bus Ministry Fund. Our new Mini-Bus is an effective tool which we will be able to use as we continue to reach out to the community through our various church ministries. Harris Jones, Chairman of the Finance Committee
