Camp E.D.G.E. is our Vacation Bible

School title this year, but really, we all, no matter our

age, live in Camp E.D.G.E. all of our lives. We are

always (E)xperiencing and (D)iscovering (G)od

(E)verywhere. Ultimately, this is the purpose and

reason we have Vacation Bible School- to be

teaching children, and the adults that help, to

experience and discover God everywhere and to

teach them to be able to see and recognize Him when

He is seen. As humans, we all have different learning

styles, so we all learn to experience God differently.

At Camp E.D.G.E. we will experience God through

music and song, through Scripture and interpretation

of that Scripture, through arts and crafts, through

mission and service to God’s children, through

science and studying how God’s world works,

through moving our bodies and recreation, through

food and fellowship with old and new friends. It’s

actually really exciting when you think about it and I

am excited to be with the children as we live and

move and have our being in God!

Something else really exciting about Camp

E.D.G.E. is our partnership with St. Luke’s UMC.

One of the great things about Methodists is we were

created to be a connectional church, building each

other up and partnering together in the ministry of

the Gospel. Camp E.D.G.E. is an example of

partnership in ministry of the Gospel between two

churches. Together, we are combining the gifts and

talents the Lord has given us as we reach and teach

children the Gospel!

1

THE PURPOSE OF FUMC IS TO INVITE ALL PEOPLE TO BECOME FULLY DEVOTED FOLLOWERS OF JESUS

CHRIST, GROWING TOGETHER IN LOVE AND SERVICE TO GOD AND NEIGHBOR.

Camp E.D.G.E. will take place at St. Luke’s

UMC Sunday, July 24th thru Thursday, July 28th,

with a special Kick-Off party on Sunday, July 24th.

We will be holding a morning (9-12) and evening VBS

(5:15-8) and we need help at both times! We still are in

need of people to serve!

We are also serving breakfast and lunch through

the child nutrition program, and will be providing dinner

in the evening. We are looking for Sunday School

classes, circles or other groups to sponsor dinners

Monday through Thursday. I want to thank the Mature

Methodist’s for sponsoring a meal on Wednesday, July

27th!

We already have over 40 children signed up for

Camp E.D.G.E. and as I look over the registration list, I

see names I know and names I do not – names from

children in the community, names of children who are

being served by Networx, Family Care Center and Foster

Care. I get excited because it does not matter if I know

the name or not, Jesus knows each of their name and for

one week, we get a chance to share Jesus’ name with the

children of Hickory.

I hope you will be praying for us on July 24th –

July 29th. I hope that you would be praying that we will

experience and discover God everywhere.

Please let me know if you would like to help or would

like to help provide a meal!

I hope you experience and discover God everywhere you

are today.

In Christ,

Leeann ([email protected])

The days are getting longer…the weather is getting warmer…it is almost Vacation Bible School time! This year, we are doing something special. We are partnering with St. Luke’s UMC to have a week full of morning and evening fun. Our time together will be called Camp E.D.G.E., and we will be having lots of fun at the Beach learning about the Beatitudes.

VBS will take place at St. Luke’s UMC Sunday, July 24 thru Friday, July 29, with a special Kick-Off party on Sunday, July 24. We will be holding a morning (9-12) and evening VBS (5:15-8), and we need help at both times! We are in need of the following: teachers for every age level starting at 3 years through 3rd grade, a craft leader, an assembly leader, an elementary and preschool science leader, and two mission leaders for 4th and 5th grade!

At VBS this year we are also serving breakfast and lunch through the child nutrition program, and we will be providing dinner in the evening. We are looking for Sunday School classes, circles or other groups to sponsor dinners Monday through Thursday.

Volunteers for both morning and night Camp E.D.G.E are needed, so if you are interested in helping, contact Leeann at 828-322-6058 or [email protected]

July 11-15, 2016 we will offer “Faith Under Construction” to

rising First through rising Seventh grade students. We will build

an outdoor worship space from scratch and then have a worship

service Friday night, but we need you to make it successful! We

need the following people to help with each aspect of worship:

Throughout this season of Summer you’ll probably go

somewhere outside of Hickory. When you do, grab a

bulletin from where you worship on Sunday, bring it home,

then take it to church with you, and put it in Leeann’s box in

the church office. We’ll be able to see how far this Body of

Christ has gone out into the world to be His hands and feet.

Crawdads Concessions That's right, sports food fans, it's time again for Crawdads concessions!

The funds raised through these events will go into the general Missions fund. Because we don't have that "big" event on the horizon, we are only planning to do four nights this season. But, oh, what a 4 nights we have. Dates for this year:

Saturday, July 16—Midget Wrestling and Bark at the Park night

Friday, August 26 - Pixar 30th Anniversary night and FIREWORKS!! We need at least 14 people each night to maximize our returns. You must be at least 18 years old. Feel free to recruit your friends to help. They'll thank you later. Please reply to Troy Howard ([email protected]) with the dates that you can help. Seriously, thank you all for working these events. We're turning a few hours of grease and grins into resources that can change lives. Play ball!

ALUMINUM CAN COLLECTION FOR MISSIONS

I’ve been the can wrangler the last 2-3 years, and I

wish to retire this position. Would you be interested

in collecting the cans in the Community Room,

cashing them in at Mountain Recycling then returning

the $ to Dana for Missions? It only takes about 20

minutes/6-week period. If you spy the cans

overflowing the box in between times, you can stash

them somewhere until you get a reasonable amount

to process. It’s not huge money, but not huge work

either…about $120/year for an easy-sneezy job.

If you are interested, please call,

244-1549, or email [email protected] !

Thanks,

Pam Hale

Blood Pressure Check The Wellness Ministry would like to remind you

that a blood pressure check is scheduled for the

second Sunday of each month.

Please go to the Community Room between

9:15 a.m. and 9:45 a.m. on JULY 10.

This week, July 4-10, we are looking at the life of the start of the church beginning with Pentecost, to the first sermon, and then a healing by Peter and John. Sunday we will talk about the power of the name of Christ. As we begin our ministry to-gether, I hope that we begin by remembering that Christ is the center of the church and Christ is the foundation of the church. Oh there is no other name by which we must be saved. I look forward to being in ministry with you here at First Hickory. -Paul
