    Since its launch in September 2010 at the Clinton Global Initiative, the Global Alliaor Clean Cookstoves has moved rapidly to position the cookstoves sector to ach

    unprecedented global progress. Critical investments such as those to establish global standand analyze regional cookstove markets have begun; a comprehensive assessment o feld has been completed; and major awareness raisinge orts are well underway including the selection o high-profle ambassadors or the Alliance. With leadershipunder new Executive Director Radha Muthiah in place, abusiness plan or the Alliance due by the end o the year,a growing fnancial base or operations, and a rapidlygrowing list o partners including 20 countries theAlliance is well on its way to achieving its ambitiousgoal o 100 million households adopting cleanand e fcient cookstoves by 2020.

    Raising AwarenessOver the past year, the Alliance has raised internationalawareness about the impact o traditional cookingpractices on health, the environment, livelihoods, andwomens empowerment in developing countries throughtargeted press events and high-level speaking engagementsIn doing so, the Alliance has highlighted the urgency o theissue within the global health, energy, and developmentcommunities, and increased awareness o the need or cleacookstoves and uels among policy-makers, donors, theprivate sector, and civil society.U.S. Secretary o State Hillary Rodham Clinton has playedan invaluable role as a champion and spokesperson or theissue, leading the Alliances launch, diplomatic outreach,and country recruitment e orts. Secretary Clinton has alsocatalyzed international media attention on this importantproblem that has been long overlooked by the developmentand diplomatic communities.The Alliance has received widespread international pressand media exposure over the past year and has been

    eatured, cited, or quoted in almost 1,000 unique stories,articles, reports, broadcasts, op-eds, and blog posts,including eature stories in major publications such as TNew York Times , Reuters , The Washington Post , AssociatPress , Time Magazine , The Guardian , The Lancet , and TEconomist . The Alliance has received coverage by NP

    British Broadcasting Corporation , and CNN , among othwidely recognized media outlets.The Alliance has also seen a surge o international prescoverage associated with the May announcement oAcademy Award-winning actor Julia Roberts as its frstGlobal Ambassador.     rom around the world to raise awareness o household airpollution within their respective countries, and to highlightways to bring clean cooking solutions to developingcountries.

    A Resource Base for the FutureThe Alliance set an initial ten-year $250 million undraising goal and has made great progresstoward that ambitious target. Thanks to the generosity o its donors over the past year, the Alliancehas raised almost $25 million in unrestricted and restricted programmatic unding and pledges,as well as more than $53 million in parallel fve-year commitments rom the U.S. Government.These resources have in-turn leveraged millions o dollars in in-kind support and secondements

    rom stakeholders, donors, and a growing list o national partners.In addition, the Alliance is pleased to recognize the private and philanthropic sectors or theirsupport o the Alliance during its initial year. The Alliance has benefted rom generous undingand in-kind support rom donors such as Dow Corning Corporation, Shell Corporation, andMorgan Stanley, as well as the United Nations Foundation, Shell Foundation, SNV NetherlandsDevelopment Organisation, and the World Bank. Continued Alliance undraising e ortswill ocus on securing su fcient resources rom a diverse donor base to meet the initiativesprogrammatic and technical assistance needs moving orward.

    By working to create a market for clean and affordable cooking solutions in the developingworld, the Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves is playing a crucial role in the worldwide effort to promote access to sustainable energy for all.     Building Strong PartnershipsThe Alliance has secured the participation o more than 175 partners rom around the world stove manu acturers, businesses, fnancial institutions, non-proft and humanitarian groups, aith-based charities, academic institutions, governments, small businesses, and UN agencies whosecommitment to the mission and objectives o the Alliance will be instrumental to achieving its goals.Extensive programmatic expertise, knowledge o cookstoves markets, in-country experience, andinsights into overcoming supply-chain barriers have been provided by this diverse set o partnersand are essential to its uture success in trans orming the sector.Country participation has also grown markedly over the past year. From an initial base o threedonor countries and one national partner at its 2010 September launch, the Alliance now includes20 donor and implementing countries. This strong base o national partners is committed tothe development o a thriving market or clean, sa e, and e fcient cookstoves both within theirborders and regionally, and have made collaboration with the Alliance a national priority. Theirengagement will orm the core o the initiatives e orts to develop comprehensive local, national,and regional clean cookstove policies and programs.

    Accomplishment Raised more than $78 million in partner commitmen

    Conducted a detailed study with the AmericNational Standards Institute to assess global stostandards and provide recommendations or development o an international consensus stand

    or clean cookstoves. Facilitated the Lima Consensus, a groundbreaki

    agreement among stakeholders regarding development o a tiered, interim health and e fciecookstove standard.

    Funded a World Health Organization/U.S. Centor Disease Control study in Kenya to assess

    acceptability, impact on household air pollution, apersonal exposure o various clean stoves to determthe benefts or childrens health.

    The AllianceThe Global Alliance or Clean Cookstoves is an innovativepublic-private partnership led by the United NationsFoundation to create a thriving global market or clean ande fcient cookstoves and uels. The Alliance aims to raise $250million over ten years to: Save lives by reducing exposure to cookstove smoke; Improve livelihoods by reducing disease, reeing time, and
