Welcome to the Central University of Technology, Free State! Your first year will be filled with exciting experiences, challenges and opportunities that will make for a rewarding time at CUT. You’re about to begin an incredible journey, and it is our goal to help make it the best it can be. We as the academic team are here to assist you and make your transition successful. Our Innovation in Learning and Teaching (ILT) team, under the leadership of the Director, Prof. Monnapula-Mapesela, will take special care of you through various academic support programmes that are offered mostly by the four faculties. Please contact the staff in the faculties, ILT or the SRC if you or your parents or loved ones experience any problems during the year. Our aim is to ensure that you will be successful in your studies, and to assist in positioning you towards the attainment of a university qualification. Building a solid foundation during the first year is the key to a successful university experience.

Personally, it is an on-going privilege for me, in collaboration with all staff, to create a pathway for preparing young minds and future leaders who would be able to lead the world of tomorrow! CUT will continue during �017 to provide quality graduates, technological innovation to analyse complex problems, explore new territories and to establish new knowledge in ensuring that we meet the needs of the region, province and our country. Dear First-Year Students (Graduates of �0�0)

A very warm welcome to Central University of Technology, Free State! As the Director for Innovation in Learning and Teaching I would like to assure you that you will not regret the choice that you have made to come to CUT - a University that we affectionately refer to as a “cut above the rest”.

As you start your transformative journey as a family of CUT know that your success is our priority. We value not only your choice, but we wish you a fulfilling learning experience and success in your studies. Our responsibility as a centre in charge of all academic support and development for students and academic staff is to help you make a smooth transition to our university by availing various forms of academic support and development opportunities to you. Please use these resources from the first day that you are at CUT.

Among the few programmes aimed at supporting you, let me highlight the following:

Supplemental Instruction (SI): this is an academic assistance programme that aims to improve your academic performance in identified courses that may prove challenging to you as a student. SI leaders who are senior students who have completed these courses and earned good grades assist their peers with challenges they may encounter in their courses, especially traditionally difficult ones. At CUT Supplemental Instruction is compulsory for all students who obtain 50% or below in a particular course/module.

Academic Literacy and Communication Studies: this is aimed at equipping you with necessary reading and writing skills needed to succeed at university.

Personal Information Management (PIM): this programme is run by the Library Information Centre (LIC) and is primarily aimed at improving students’ use of communication technologies to access information from different sources.

Student Peer Mentorship Programme (including the residences academic mentorship programme): in this programme, senior students act as peer mentors to assist you to adjust and cope with the new university environment or academic/study programme of your choice. What we would like to achieve through this programme is to:o provide you with a supportive environment for you to develop your maximum personal and academic potentialo encourage positive interaction between students, mentors and staff ando Assist you to understand and manage the challenges and opportunities of university life.

Unit for students with special needs: This unit provides among other things, advice on issues relating to disability, counselling for students living with disabilities, software for blind/ or partially sighted students, and other forms of support.

The Writing Centre: is a drop-in facility that provides free assistance to undergraduate students on the following range of writing needs:o Understanding the focus of an assignmento Structuring an essayo Expressing ideas clearly and coherentlyo Avoiding plagiarismo Referencing correctly

You are urged to make full use of these programmes and others which will be availed to you by faculties and other support services. Let us work together to ensure that you create a learning experience full of good memories and please do not let anything prevent you from completing your studies and achieving your dream! The University has an open day where the Vice Chancellor will be welcoming you for the first time and this is held at Boet Troskie hall shown below. It is the biggest hall at this University. Our graduation ceremonies are also held at Boet Troskie.

Let us introduce you to the basic facilities around this University, both in Bloemfontein and Welkom Campus. You will still learn about many of them as you move around campus. The first one you need to know about is the student administration centre where most of your transactions will take place. This is called Lapeng student administration as shown in the picture below. Here you will also find the wellness centre on the first floor. Feel free to visit Lapeng for any matter that affects you as a student.

Once you have completed your registration, you will need to start focusing on your academics. In order to support you in this course, our University has a fully-fledged Library and Information Centre (LIC) (left below). You will always find friendly and helpful staff to assist you with your needs. On the right below is the Student Academic Support Centre with facilities that are aimed at supporting your academic development like study areas, computer labs, etc. Please make use of these facilities.

The university is aware of the fact that not everyone has the privilege to study at the main campus on a full-time basis. Therefore, selected learning programmes are offered at CUT’s Welkom Campus. Welkom campus facilities for students include: a library and information services, student cafeteria, �4-hour computer laboratory, equipped laboratories for programmes offered, a wellness centre that supports staff and students with psychological matters, counseling, supplement studies, social services and a wide range of sport facilities are available. Various student organisations, cultural activities as well as health services are available to advance access to quality education and to support students during their university years. The facility below is our Student Academic Support Centre for Welkom Campus.

We also have residences for those students who would like to stay on the University campus. These are centrally situated, affordable, can accommodate large groups of students and have �4-hour security. These residences are closed during the University’s recesses. SI is an academic assistance programme that aims to increase student’s performance and retention.It is offered at first, second, and third year levels to assist students with their academic studies.It targets high-risk courses rather than high-risk students and aims to improve the pass of students.SI is presented in the form of peer-facilitated sessions and incorporates principles of peer collaborative learningSI aims to improve leaning skills like thinking and reasoning responsibility, and reflection.

CeLET is responsible for the following:

Empowering learners to use various new educational technologies and e-Thuto for learning. Creating a suitable academic web environment for students. Registering all enrolled students on e-Thuto. Supports and addresses students’ queries via a helpdesk.

• Assisting with the drafting of Work-Integrated Learning guidelines and programmes (logbooks and study guides).• Liaising with the various faculties on an on-going basis to develop effective systems of WIL and to address identified needs through workshops and training sessions.

Peer Mentorship Programme

The University has a Peer Mentorship Programme coordinated from four Faculties namely Health and Environmental Sciences, Engineering and Information Technology, Humanities as well as Management Sciences. The purpose is to provide you as first-year students with social and academic support so that you can adjust better to tertiary education and enhance your academic performance.

The goals of this programme are:

These goals are made possible in the Faculties mentioned above by the coordination from the Teaching and Learning Coordinators/Manager and the appointment of peer mentors who are senior students in their second and third yearlevel. These mentors will be directly assisting you with all the necessary skills ranging from orientation on campus, student support services, to basic life skills you need to succeed in your learning. Mentors will also be able to refer you to the relevant psychosocial support services available on campus when the need arises.

Wellness Services

STUDENT LIFE AT CUTStudent services presents various cultural and student development activities on a regular basis. The most important factor is: Get involved!

Provision is made in some way or another for the interests of each student. In the academic field, student interests are further stimulated by existing subject associations in most study fields, which offer interesting activities throughout the year under the protection of a guardian lecturer.

In the cultural arena, there is close liaison with the various arts councils, while students are welcome to join any clubs that may interest them. For students who enjoy dancing, for instance, we offer Ballroom and Latin American dancing, while the CUT Revue Group holds regular performances.

The CUT Choir also offers students the opportunity to further develop their musical and singing talents. Other cultural associations include the Drama Association, Voortrekkers, Chess Club and Debating Society, while members of the Columbine Adventure Club regularly go on hiking expeditions. The Women Students’ Organisation is dedicated to the needs of our female students, while Club Forte is there to ensure that all students have an enjoyable social and cultural life. The student Union has been established to make a positive contribution to vibrant student life. We also celebrate the richness and diversity of the different cultures on campus during our annual Culture Week.

Young writers can develop their talents further by serving on the editorial staff of the student’s newspaper, Speculum.

STUDENT DEVELOPMENT AND GOVERNANCEStudent leadership programmes are offered to prepare students for leadership roles and responsibilities on campus and in society at large. We are committed to helping students explore and optimise their leadership potential. Leading students set the standards and by word and deed also inspire other students to perform better in all aspects of life. Our local community needs citizens who are prepared to make a positive contribution. These opportunities are made possible through the Student Development and Governance Unit, which oversees all choir, drama, chess, dancing and debating activities.

CUT has a diverse community with different backgrounds and traditions. Every year, we set aside one week to celebrate the cultural heritage of all the groups represented on campus. These festivities, which include traditional food, music and dance are aimed at bridging the cultural gap and helping staff members and students to better understand one another.

The University also has a Student Representative Council (SRC) which is led by the President, Mr. Solomon Khiba. You will have an opportunity to interact with all the other members of the SRC at different levels of your student life. Feel free to contact them when you need their guidance or support.

CUT Wellness Centre

The Wellness Centre offers a variety of services to enhance students’ learning experiences. Services are offered by qualified and professional psychologists, social workers,medical doctors, nurses, reading development officers, HIV/AIDS counsellors and practitioners. The services are strictly confidential and free for all CUT students.

The Internationalisation of higher education is a phenomenon that has arrived on the doorstep of almost all higher education institutions in the world, least of which the Central University of Technology, Free State (CUT), through its long history of providing a home for African and other international scholars.

Dear Student

Thank you for choosing the Central University of Technology, Free State to further your studies. This is the start of the first year and exciting varied three years that will lead to the obtaining of your National Diploma, and eventually for those who pursue their studies, their B.Tech and other senior degrees of choice.

You will encounter a series of interesting courses and lectures. The different subjects will sometimes comprise of lectures, and/ or tutorials and /or practical work. Some however will also include slides, videos, site visits, etc.

Lectures and tutorials provide a great opportunity to acquire information and testing your knowledge. You should as soon as possible develop the habit of learning new material, doing assignments, executing practical work, and doing the required reading when new information is presented.

Your first year is the ideal time to develop good time management skills, which will serve you well throughout your career. You are strongly advised not to leave all your revision until the free period before the Main Tests and Formal Assessments – ask your lecturers, or your classmates to clarify points you don’t understand as soon as you can.

It therefore of cardinal importance that you attend the compulsory Orientation Programme where you would be briefed in detail of all the services different departments and divisions on campus can render to you. It is the best way to get to know the university and your fellow students before classes start.

Enrolment and Registration in essence therefore entails that students must report to the different departments (which will be based in the Boet Troskie Hall) where their place in a specific programme will be verified and made official, based on their results in the NSC exam – be it in �016 or earlier.• All late registrations must be concluded before close of business on Friday, 17 February �017.• Compulsory Academic Advising sessions for all First Years will be offered by senior students with the intent to brief new student about the courses, study methods and numerous academic activities they should take cognisance of.• The Academic Induction for First Year students in the Faculty of Engineering & Information Technology will take place from Wednesday, 11 January 2017 from 8:30 – 15:00 in Rooms 136 and 159, phase II of the BHP Billiton Building. It is compulsory for all First Years in the Faculty of Engineering & Information Technology to attend.• The General Orientation for all First Years at CUT will take place on

Saturday, �1 January �017 in the Boet Troskie Hall. First Years will be briefed about different services such as Counselling, Chaplaincy, Evaluations, Sport, Legal & Auxiliary Services, Financial Aid, Work Integrated Learning, and Governance & Student Services. Students will also be briefed on the services rendered by the Library and Information Centre at a later stage. It is compulsory for all First Years at CUT to attend.

• Students in Engineering will be subjected to compulsory Mathematics tutorials on Thursday, 1� January �017and Friday, 13 January �017.

Administrative Requirements for Enrolment

• A certified copy of the National Senior Certificate (NSC) or a Statement of Results with the specific prescribed subjects as required by the different programmes and an Admission Point Score (APS) / M-count of 27 is required on the day of registration.

o A valid passport; o A Study Visa, issued specifically for CUT; o A proof of Medical Insurance Cover, recognized in South Africa (Momentum, Compare Care, or Discovery Health are recommended Medical Aids at CUT). Medical Aid cover must be for a period of 1� months; and o All tuition and residence fees must be settled in FULL prior to registration.

The Department of Clinical Sciences offers a Bachelor a Bachelor of Radiography in Diagnostics. Radiography is a profession where technology and science are used to produce anatomical images of the body. Radiographers as professionally trained healthcare workers are part of the healthcare team and skilled in the use of X-rays, ultrasound, magnetism (MRI) and radioactivity for diagnostic and treatment purposes.

3. Department of Health Sciences

The Department of Health Sciences offers three professional programmes, namely, Biomedical Technology, Clinical Technology and Somatology.

Qualified Biomedical Technologists are employed in private pathology practices, like the South African National Blood Services (SANBS), the National Health Laboratory Services (NHLS) and the Medical Research Council (MRC) and other disciplines such as Pharmaceutical companies.

Clinical Technologists can work in hospitals, well-equipped clinics, operating theatres, intensive care units and laboratories. A Clinical Technologist also has an option of setting up his/ her own practise.

Qualified Somatologists may become owners or managers in the business industry. Somatologists can work in gymnasiums and health spas/ and in conjunction with medical practitioners. Somatologists can further work as make-up artists, facilitator at training institutions, health and beauty columnists/ sales representatives for cosmetic and medical products.

4. Department of Life Sciences

The Department of Life Sciences comprises of Dental Assisting (Higher Certificate), Environmental Health and a Unit for Applied Food Safety and Biotechnology (UAFSB) and generic based subjects. The Department embraces the full breadth of modern life science activity and comprises one of the largest research groups at the University.

The Department also hosts a student organisation (Life Sciences Student Organisation) which is involved in a number of community empowerment projects related to students’ academic work.

INFORMATION: 2017

First year students (all programmes) report on 28 January 2017 at 10:00 at the Boet Troskie Hall for the official opening. First year students enrol at the Boet Troskie Hall on 11 January 2017 and senior students on 19 January 2017. Classes commence on 28 January 2017 for day and evening students.The general orientation is scheduled for 21 January 2017 at the Boet Troskie Hall,commencing at 08:30.

Day classes are generally presented from Monday to Friday between 07:55 and 17:10.

Part-time classes are generally presented on the following days, namely, Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays between 17:15 and 21:35.

A list of prescribed books will be given to you at enrolments/orientation. You are advised not to purchase books before having consulted with the lecturer concerned.

It is a singular honour for me, as the Dean of the Faculty of Humanities, to welcome you to the Central University of Technology, Free State, as a new cohort of �017 first year students. In my words of welcome, I wish to give you a summary of what the Faculty of Humanities entails.

The Faculty of Humanities consists of six departments, namely the Department of Communication Sciences; Department of Design and Studio Art; Department of Mathematics, Science and Technology Education; Department of Language and Social Sciences Education; Department Educational and Professional Studies,Department of Post Graduate Studies: Education. The Faculty of Humanities offers a variety of qualifications, ranging from Diplomas to Doctoral degrees.

The Diploma is a three-year, full-time, career-oriented qualification. After obtaining the Diploma qualification, a student may continue with a fourth year of study to obtain the Advanced diploma, and Post Graduate Diploma before proceeding with Master and Doctorate studies.

For Teacher Education, the initial qualification is the four-year Bachelor of Education in Senior Phase and FET Teaching i.e. B Ed (SP & FET Teaching) followed by the B Ed (Honours) Degree programme, which can be completed within one year on a full-time basis or within two years on a part-time basis. Students also have the opportunity to enrol for the Master of Education (M Ed) and Doctor of Education (D Ed) programmes. The one-year full-time or two years part-time Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) programme is also offered in Teacher Education.
