On May 4, 1991, the first Annual Junior Mus Tournament was held at the Basque Center in Elko. There were five teams that participated. First place was won by Joey and Michael Leonis. Second place was won by Maite Ugalde and Elisa Goyeneche. The event was promoted and coordinated by Judy Ugalde and Jose Arbil/aga. The team of Maite Ugalde and Joey Leonis went on to win the Junior NABO Mus Championship in Winnemucca June 8, 1991.

on our program cover by luone Samper, the Elko Basques have "American Pride". We salute the men and women of "Desert Storm" and all veterans, for having kept America free, so that festivals like ours can happen now and in the future.

Elko has been the home of The National Basque Festival for 28 years. Many of the Basques who worked hard in those first years now have children or grandchildren keeping the traditions alive. The Elko Basque Club would like to dedicate 1991 handball to the memory of Manuel Arbillaga. Manuel loved handball and supported the game as a spectator, giuing encouragement to players of all ages. Many youngsters, over the years got a "so/ t" handsewn pelota from Manuel that helped them develop their hands.

The NABO Handball Tournament will be one of the euents of the 28th National Basque Festiual. Local contestants are, back row from left, Miguel Leonis, Jose Telleria and Ramon Zugazaga; fron t row, Joe Martiartu and Ysidoro Fagoaga.

The youngsters pictured aboue show some of the traditional Basque dress for festival dancers. The satin skirt, uest ouer blouse and head scarf in some combination of red, white, green and black are worn by girl dancers. The boys will be found in the blue, shown aboue, to any combination of red, white, green and black, pants, uests, shirts and berets. Teresa's mom, Anita Anacabe Franzoia, and Gabriel's father, Fermin Arbi/laga are former Elko Basque dancers. Gabriel's grandmother, Ana Marie was for many years the principle dance instructor for all the Elko dancers.

The parade will go through the business district to end at the Elko County Fair Grounds. All businesses and clubs are invited to participate. Trophies will be presented to the best all around floats as well as to the best organizational and club entries by Albertson's and FIB. Featured during the parade will be the Elko "Arinak", the Salt Lake City "Triskalari", the Boise "Oinkari", the Winnemucca "Itrrinzi" and UNR "Gaten Bat". Cruz Bilbao will serve as the Grand Marshall.

Joe Goicoechea was the champion for many years in the weight carrying contest. His style was once reported as "a man out for a stroll". Today we will see contestants run, jog and stagger, as many struggle to go over 500 ft. , in his prime Joe was always good for 850 to 1,000 ft.

The sheephooking contest has it's roots in the everyday life of a sheepherder. The sheephook is to him like the rope is to the cowboy. The sheephook allows the herder to catch a sheep without injuring the animal. Our contests puts one man, on foot, in the pen, to hook one sheep, drag it to a post and tie one foot so the animal cannot get away. The fastest time wins.
