The Fitness Industry The fitness industry has been growing steadily over the past few years. The Australian government is making a significant effort to encourage Australians to adopt a healthier lifestyle, resulting in a greater demand for fitness products and services. Australian fitness industry statistics The fitness industry in Australia generates an average of about one billion dollars in revenue on an annual basis. There altogether 2,856 gyms and fitness centers across the country, which collectively provide employment for more than 17,000 people. In 2011, about 3.3 million Australians used a professional exercise service. The Australian fitness industry is expected to grow by 4.8 percent between 2009 and 2014, despite a decline in 2009 when consumers sought more affordable health and fitness alternatives because of the bad economic climate.

Why is the Australian fitness industry growing? According to a study conducted by the United Nations, Australia is the fifth most obese country in the world, with about 24.6 percent of its citizens considered obese. If the current trend is not slowed down or reversed, it is estimated that almost three out of four Australians will be obese or overweight in 2025. The popularity of weight loss reality TV shows, efforts by the government to promote healthy living and weight loss, and the household outsourcing trend are some of the factors that have contributed to the increase in demand for fitness services and products. Fitness centers provide a cost-effective way for Australians to improve their health and fitness, and it has been proven that they can collectively reduce direct healthcare costs by up to $108 million a year. The increasing availability of fitness centers and low-cost fitness alternatives has made it easier for Aussies to keep fit. http://www.businessreviewaustralia.com/business_leaders/australias-fitness-industry-experiences-growth-into-the-billions

Access to Equipment and Work Experience It is expected that students gain work experience in participating in exercise sessions at a fitness centre or a similar environment. There is no need for students to have their own exercise equipment however access is required to a fitness centre to enable you to practice the exercises and to improve your skills. You will also need access to a fitness centre or similar to complete some of the practical components of the course such as Part 1 of the practical workbook and the older adults elective.

When you enrol in your course Fit Dimension Education will request details regarding your chosen fitness centre and the details of a suitably qualified supervisor. You will receive a checklist which includes:

• Access to equipment • Access to resources • Access to a variety of clients including older adults • Access to a variety of styles of circuit classes • Access to a safe work environment • Is the Centre Fitness Australia Accredited? • Does the fitness centre conduct pre-screening of all clients, including a variety

of fitness assessments such as: blood pressure, body fat, flexibility, and strength testing?

• Does the fitness centre design individual programs for members using: free weights, functional training equipment, cross training equipment (such as Swiss and bosu balls), and machine weights?

• Does the fitness centre employ only suitably qualified, registered and insured staff?

Your nominated supervisor or fitness centre manager will receive a checklist which Fit Dimension Education will request be returned prior to you gaining any work experience with them. They will receive a feedback form which is to be completed either during your work experience or on completion of your work experience (or preferably both). Feedback is important for Fit Dimension Education to gain knowledge of industry, expectations of our course and our students and any other information which can help to improve the quality of course delivery and assessment and the professionalism of our graduates. The checklist for yourself and your nominated supervisor or fitness centre manager ensures that you are gaining experience in a suitable facility and have access to resources required to successfully complete your course. If you have any difficulties with locating a suitable facility please contact Fit Dimension Education immediately for assistance [email protected] All students will need to have a computer to complete the assessments. Students will also need to have access to a high speed internet connection (e.g. Broadband) and email facilities.

Fitness Levels You don’t need to be an elite athlete to work in the fitness industry, however you do need to maintain a level of fitness that enables you to safely demonstrate and instruct exercises to clients. Keep in mind, as a trainer; you are a role model for your clients. You are not going to have much credibility if you don’t have an active and healthy lifestyle. Throughout the course you are not required to participate in strenuous exercise. The focus of the course is to train you to be able to instruct exercise to your clients; not to turn you into an elite athlete. Passion Highly recommended! This includes: • The capacity to influence people • An interest in helping people to achieve goals • The ability to motivate people and be a role model • Passion to make a difference to the lives of your clients Our Commitment Fit Dimension Education is a highly professional organisation. Support Services After you have enrolled you will be provided with the contact details of our support services. You are welcome to contact us should you need any assistance throughout the course. We find that some students contact us regularly while others progress through the course without the need of our support services. Keep in mind there are specific pathways for seeking support. Online students can seek support through tutor online, message my teacher, a web based support service and by directly calling the teacher during support hours. The best way to contact your teacher if you would like to speak with them is to message via the Moodle “message my teacher” and leave your contact details and the best times to contact you. On practical workshop days students have full access to teacher support face to face.

As part of employability skills of the qualification are planning and organisation, as well as self-management some planning and self-motivation is expected of students. We will make contact with you during the course to check progress, but ultimately it is the student’s responsibility to complete the course and assessment in the required timeframe.

Assessments The assessments are designed to assess your competency in performing a particular skill. Various methods of assessment are used to measure your competency throughout the course. These include:

• Assignment Case studies: These simulate the type of situations you would encounter in the work environment. For example, you are provided with the details of a particular client and are required to develop an exercise program to achieve his / her goals.

• Tests: The tests are completed online and are used to assess your knowledge and understanding of the human body and how it functions during exercise.

• Practical Assessments and Workshops: These include practical manuals with tasks to complete, as well as practical workshops which run regularly for students to attend. The workshops are used to assess the more practical aspects of the course. The practical workshops are run over 1-4 weekends (2-7 days depending on the electives chosen) or a 7 day intensive school at one of our practical sites. We use a variety of practical sites depending on what course you are completing, all situated within 20 minutes of the Gold Coast Airport. If a student needs more time with practical training they are able to attend the practical training on more than one occasion.

All assessments must be completed satisfactorily. If an assessment is not satisfactory you will be provided with feedback to clarify the topic and you are able to resubmit the assessment. There is no academic ‘penalty’ associated with resubmission of an assessment. Assessments are marked within 10 working days then feedback is provided. Fit Dimension Education is required to retain your work for 6 months after completion for an appeals period.

Fit Dimension Education reserves the right to cancel the enrolment of any student found to have cheated on an assessment or plagiarised information from another source and submitted it as their work. No refund will be applicable under these circumstances.

Marking Student assessments are marked by a qualified assessor (Certificate IV in Training and Assessment) against set criteria that addresses the information required. All answers are marked individually. The student will be provided with extensive and comprehensive feedback. Online assessments are marked electronically. Grading Students are graded as satisfactory, or not satisfactory on each assessment. Satisfactory completion of all assessments relating to a unit of competency results in a grade of Competent (C) for that unit. Assessments that are not satisfactory will relate to a grade of Not Yet Competent (NYC) for the unit/s that the assessment is assessing.

A Competent (C) grade indicates that a student has acquired the necessary skills and knowledge to fulfil the unit. In the event of a student receiving a Not Yet Competent (NYC) grade they will be given an opportunity to convert this grade to a competent (C) grade. If this is not attained as the student passes the maximum time allowed for the course without achieving competency the student will be issued with a Not Competent (NC) grade and be required to re-enroll in the subject.

Competent (C) indicates successful completion and a high level of understanding of a subject assessed on a competent/or not competent basis, indicating a significant understanding of course content; significant development of relevant skills; significant interpretive and analytical ability and achievement in all major objectives of the subject.

Not Yet Competent (NYC) indicates successful completion of many aspects of the subject but an inadequate understanding of other elements of the subject that require further revision. Students are given the opportunity to up skill to a competent grade.

Not Competent (NC) indicates an inadequate understanding of the basic course content, failure to develop relevant skills, insufficient evidence of interpretive and analytical ability, and failure to achieve some or all major and minor objectives of the course.

Withdraw; Not Competent (WNC) indicates a cancelled enrolment in the course after the final date for completion. Students may also choose to withdraw themselves before the due date should they no longer wish to complete the course. When you have completed all the required units of competency for the qualification you will be admitted to the qualification. When a student demonstrates competency in specific units of a qualification, but fails to satisfy the full required units, a Statement of Attainment will be issued outlining the units of competency achieved. Units of the course are assessed holistically in assessment meaning that they are in many cases assessed as a group of units rather than separate units.

Academic Information What is Competency Based Training and Assessment? The health and fitness and sport industry has evolved from an unregulated and under skilled industry to one that is now striving to present a high quality product. Changes have happened over the past two decades, however, there has been an acceleration of diversification in the last ten years. As society evolves and leisure, health and well-being become more achievable and important to all individuals, the health and fitness and sport industry has adjusted to meet the demands. Other factors that have impacted on the health and fitness industry include an increase in regulation of the industry by government bodies, an increase in litigation and public awareness of litigation procedures, the introduction of industry traineeships and the introduction of new training packages. Fitness instructor and sports training programs have been restructured and refined in response to these factors. By completing these new programs today’s health and fitness professionals are able to demonstrate competency in a much wider range of skills than their predecessors. The characteristics of Competency Based Training are:

• Focus on specific useable skills • Recognition of prior learning, if the student can demonstrate competency then

regardless of how learning occurred they are competent. • Multiple entry and exit points, individuals need only learn what they cannot do • Modular training, training divided into smaller modules relating to competencies • Criterion referenced, based on standard of performance of specific skill • Personalised • Immediate application, skills can be applied when module is complete, rather

than after a whole course is complete • Flexible delivery, training delivered on or off the job • Necessitated a review of training methods and course content • Increased the scope for flexible delivery of programs and program assessments

What are the instructional methods used in Fit Dimension Education programs? Fit Dimension Education is taught using a flexible delivery approach. The delivery includes practical experience and online learning.

• Practical Sessions - workshop You will complete practical sessions that will simulate the workplace/practical environment

• Practical sessions - self-directed work placement to gain real life work experience within a fitness centre (or related area) environment

• Online Study

You will complete online study and in your own time. This consists of lecture readings, assessment manuals, on line tutorials, simulated work experiences and selected required research readings. Student Behaviour Fit Dimension Education expect students to behave responsibly and to respect the rights of others in the practical workshop group. If a student’s behaviour is disruptive to other students they will be removed from the class. If a student is doing self-directed work experience within a fitness centre they are expected to behave responsibly under the rules of the centre they are working with. As you will be achieving a nationally accredited qualification there are requirements regarding the authenticity of work and assessments that we must uphold. Student work is randomly screened through plagiarism detection software comparing work on text materials and other students work.

Industry Networks and On-Going Support We have extensive industry networks which can be of great benefit to us and our students. We can put you in touch with fitness centres and personal trainers in your area to assist you with your practical placement. Many of these centres recruit staff as a result of the self-directed practical placement. We encourage students to use the placement as an opportunity to obtain employment. We are regularly contacted by fitness centres and Personal Training (PT) businesses regarding employment opportunities for our graduates. We post these job vacancies in the members section of our website which you will be able to access. Once you are working in the fitness industry you can still contact Fit Dimension Education for on-going support. For example, you may require information about professional development or other matters. Students are welcome to contact Fit Dimension Education for assistance to discuss your career.

Recognition of Prior Learning Fee Candidates wishing to apply for recognition of prior learning (RPL) should follow the procedures outlined in the Recognition of Prior Learning Policy located on the Fit Dimension Education website. On completion and submission of the required forms and documentation, the application form will be forwarded to the Fit Dimension Education Member Administration team for process of payment. This fee is applied per unit of competency for which recognition is being sought.

Mutual recognition is a process for students who have a qualification or statement of attainment for vocational education and training completed at another Registered Training Organisation. Students can apply for recognition of their training as a part of their application.

Recognition of prior learning (RPL) is a process for giving students credit for skills, knowledge and experience gained prior to enrolling in the selected course. It can be gained at any stage of their lives, through formal and informal learning, in Australia or overseas, through work or other activities such as volunteering. RPL is available for all Fit Dimension Education courses. The process will require the student to provide documented evidence of competence against the units for which you are asking for RPL.

Credit Transfer is when credit is granted for a unit of competency based on subjects or units completed through another institution or training organisation.

For further information or to apply for recognition based on any of these areas, students can request a handbook and application form from [email protected] Grievance and Student Complaint Policy All students have the right to appeal an assessment decision where they feel the assessment process was unfair or that the decision made by the assessor does not accurately reflect their competence or grade of achievement. An appeal is not interpreted as a criticism of the assessor. Rather, it is cause to review the assessment process. If a student indicates they wish to appeal an assessment decision they should be provided a Formal Grievance Form and given relevant procedural information, advice and support by the relevant staff member. Access and Equity Fit Dimension Education is committed to integrating access and equity principles within all services that we provide to our students. Access and equity refers to the policies, procedures and approaches that ensure that Fit Dimension Education training programs are responsive to the diverse needs of all students. Access and equity is concerned with removing the barriers and the opening of opportunities.

In education and training, it means ensuring that people with differing needs and abilities have the same opportunities to successfully gain skills, knowledge and experience through education and training irrespective of their age, disability, colour, race, gender, religion, sexuality, family responsibilities, or location.

Anti-Discrimination If you feel you have been discriminated against, e-mail or call Fit Dimension Education. If your complaint is still un-resolved, you may wish to seek external advice.

Reasonable adjustment A reasonable adjustment is a measure or action that will be taken to assist a student with a recognised disability to participate in training on the same basis as other students. An adjustment is reasonable if it takes into account the student’s learning needs and balances of all parties affected – the student with the disability, Fit Dimension Education staff and other students undertaking training. Fit Dimension Education is aware that the training programs delivered by the RTO will sometimes need adjustments to ensure equal opportunity for students with disabilities. The nature of reasonable adjustments is such that they are designed to minimise the disadvantage experienced by learners with a disability, rather than provide learners with a competitive advantage. This can include administrative, physical or procedural modifications.

Language, Literacy and Numeracy Support Fit Dimension Education can provide students with information about specialist assistance for students who require support with language, literacy or numeracy. Fit Dimension Education will work in co-operation with the external specialist service to ensure successful outcomes.

Support Services Our organisation provides adequate protection for the health, safety and welfare of our students. This includes appropriate support services in terms of learning and personal counselling. Please contact Fit Dimension Education for more information [email protected]
